GOD CHOSE US

Who chose first, God or you? That is the ques-tion explored in today’s three readings. The second reading, from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, reads almost like a hymn. It praises God for choosing us, for calling us to serve, and for blessing us in our service. Paul makes it clear how honored we are and how special is the call to live as children of God. This is through no doing of our own.

The first reading and the Gospel use prose ra-ther than poetry to describe the same truth: God did the choosing, not us. When the prophet Amos was berated for being a prophet, he retorted that the whole thing wasn’t his idea in the first place. Neither did the twelve apostles in today’s Gospel ask for their

calling. Jesus sent them forth, two by two, to do the work of his kingdom.

SAINT MARY OF VERNON PARISH LANDSCAPING OPPORTUNITIES

Your help Saturdays at 9:30 AM or any other time during the week with the landscaping at Saint Mary of Vernon would be greatly appreciated. We currently need help mowing the grass, especially around the buildings, and spreading wood chips. There are shrubs and trees to trim. Of course there are always buckthorn that need to be removed. Just to name a few of the jobs. With seventeen acres to take care of there is always something to work on.

JOBS Lawn Mowing; Removing Invasives: Buckthorn, Cattails, Thistle; Maintaining Trees; Planting & Main-

taining Flowers, Native Plants; Watering Plants; Burning Plant Debris; Spreading Woodchips; Prun-ing Trees & Shrubs

Please contact me if you would like to pursue anything on the list. I will meet with you to show you the grounds and the garage of tools that we have to work with. We can discuss what you would like to do more then. Gary Schiappacasse—[email protected]—1-847-691-3293 cell—https://maryofvernon.org/parish-landscaping

Every year we at SMV collect school supplies for children of low-income families at St.

Angela elementary school on the West Side of Chicago, so they can experience that

childhood pleasure of starting school in the Fall with fresh, new school supplies. Many

parish families there are under– or unemployed and cannot afford these extras for their

children. We also give school supplies to our Sharing Hands families.

Back-to-School sales are in progress—please consider picking up some extra things and

bring them to the Sharing Hands donation door from now through August. Any and all

school supplies are most appreciated—but please buy only wide-rule paper or notebooks

(no college rule). Please call the Parish Office during the week for the code to the dona-

tion door. 847-362-1005.

PARISH ANNIVERSARY MASS AND CELEBRATION

REUNION CHOIR

On August 15 our parish will celebrate our 43 anniversary with a special Re-

opening Mass at 10:30AM. As part of the celebration we would like to assem-

ble a “Reunion Choir” of all current and former choir members. Now that the

covid restrictions have been lifted this is a great time for choir members who

were away to reconnect. We also welcome former members (college age and

up) who might have moved far or near and would like to come back to celebrate

with old friends.

Rehearsals are on Wednesday nights at 7:30pm.

For more information you can contact John Cavalier at

Furniture Help Needed …whatsoever you do for the least of your brothers and sisters, you do for me.

As most of you know, we operate a furniture ministry as part of our Sharing Hands outreach to the poor. Every Saturday morning we put 5 teams consisting of an adult driver, augmented with teen and adult helpers, on the road in our Sharing Hands vehicles (4 box trucks and a pick-up truck) to pick up donations from donors and deliver that furniture to families in need. It is a most gratifying ministry that leaves the volunteer with a sense of satisfaction that he/she has affected the quality of life of those they serve. We are currently experiencing a shortage of volunteers and need your help to keep the ministry thriving. Consider:

• If you are a student who needs service hours for a school requirement such as NHS or various other pro-grams, this is a great way to do it.

• If you attend Carmel and would like to put the coming year’s campus ministry requirement behind you, why not do so while helping your parish serve the poor.

• If you are the Dad of a teen, how about joining your son or daughter on Saturday morning for a bonding experience that teaches social responsibility to your offspring.

• If you are an adult or teen who owes the court system some hours, perhaps you’d be able to cover those in this way. Confidentiality protected.

• If you are an adult or teen who feels blessed in the life God has provided for you, what better way to say thanks than to follow his command to serve the least of your brothers and sisters.

• Maybe you’d like to model the Christian life for your kids and let them see Dad in action helping others. You needn’t be muscle bound; many hands make light work. You are encouraged to bring a friend. Most of our drivers work a single three hour Saturday morning per month. The frequency is up to you. If you can help, call Jim at 847-732-9028 or [email protected].

ADOPT A GARDEN STILL NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

To everyone who has volunteered to adopt a garden, a special thank you is extended for all your help. Your

gardens have greatly enhanced the environment encompassing our parish grounds as part of the Laudato Si garden pro-

ject. These beautiful surroundings are a welcoming and peaceful way to begin our worship experience, increase our

green space for spiritual contemplation, and benefit the ecosystem as well. However, it takes effort to maintain these

grounds and more help is needed. Please consider offering an hour of your time each month to maintain one of the many

garden beds still needing adopting or invite a friend, family members or a group to adopt a garden with you. Gardening

experience is welcomed, but not necessary as we can show you how to care for the bed you adopt. With the parish reo-

pening in August, it would be nice to have the grounds looking their very best.

ST. JOSEPH EMPLOYMENT MINISTRY JULY Job Search Presentation (7pm Thursday, 7/15 via Zoom): St. Joe’s Employment Ministry is a forum intended to help job seekers, as well as those seeking a career change, develop the tools and skills necessary to land a job in today today’s competitive job market and to realize that you are not alone in your search. Our sessions are free, and all are welcome (even if you’re currently employed). Join us, and feel free to invite a friend! Please register in advance for our meetings with your name and email address. The link to register for our next meeting (along with additional meeting details) can always be found on the Employment Ministry webpage at:

Michael’s talk, Financial Survival Kit, will pro-vide important insights and practical strategies for managing your money during times of uncertainty, including transition. Having a solid, informed, actionable plan in place will help you reduce what can often be a significant source of stress during transition, so that you can focus on finding your next position. Please preregister at the Zoom link found on the Employment Ministry webpage. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

The St. Joseph Employment Ministry assists the unemployed and under-employed in the pursuit of fulfilling employ-ment opportunities. If you have questions, contact John Jennings at [email protected] . Employers are invited to post open positions by sending an email to John.

FEAST OF FAITH Invitation to the Eucharistic Prayer

After the presider washes his hands, he turns to the people and says, “Pray that our sacrifice may be ac-ceptable to God the almighty Father.” We have brought forward bread and wine, and now we are asked to see in these simple gifts upon the altar a sacri-fice offered to God. Our response is rich in theological meaning. “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands.” The words point to the unique role of the priest, whose hands, at his ordination, were anointed for just this purpose: that he might “sanctify the Chris-tian people and offer sacrifice to God” (Rite of Ordina-tion). We ask God to accept our sacrifice not because it is worthy of God, but simply “for the praise and glory of his name.” God does not need our offering, but al-lows us to give it so that we might grow in holiness. And God, never to be outdone in generosity, gives all that we have given back to us, “for our good and the good of all his Church.” This Mass benefits not just those who have gathered, but, in the mysterious econo-my of grace, the whole Church. In the words of Saint Paul, when one part rejoices, the whole body “share[s] its joy” (1 Corinthians 12:26).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Does the scene of the disciples being sent out two by two bring to mind any other scripture? After the flood, Noah opens the door of the ark and sends his passen-gers out to renew the face of the earth. Certainly, Jesus has the same purpose. The purpose is fulfilled in your communion in the Body of Christ today, and in your being sent from the Eucharist into the world. The send-ing is so important that our word “Mass” derives from it. In Latin, the last words of worship are Ite, missa est, which means “Go, you are sent.” From that, people be-gan to call Catholic worship the missa, or in English, the “Mass.” Our English words dismissal, missal, emis-sary, and mission are all related. We are not sent into the workaday world alone, but in relationship to one another. Some people have acquired the unhappy habit of leav-ing worship as soon as they receive Communion and therefore miss the prayer, the dismissal, and the solemn blessing that are essential parts of the Mass. The dis-missal is a seal on our Communion and reveals its pur-pose. Thanks be to God! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
