THIS WEEK IN THE RCIA: ON THE ROAD TO THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION St. Mary of Vernon’s RCIA group is working through a series of topics during the final preparation for receipt of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. During this “period of enlightenment” we will be reviewing the Lenten Scrutinies (which take place at Sunday Masses), our Creed, the Way of the Cross, and the Lord’s Prayer. You are invit-ed to keep Cindy – our catechumen – and Antoni – our candidate – in your Lenten prayers and rememberences. Know someone (including yourself) who’s thinking about looking into the Catholic faith as the place to continue your relationship with God? We’re ready when you are!

Any non-Catholic wishing to learn more about the Catholic faith and the Catholic Church - now is the time to step for-ward - the time to connect with our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program is here. Anyone baptized Catholic but not having received the Sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation - it’s also the right time for you to get on board!

Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings; if that doesn’t fit your Schedule, let’s talk anyway – we can help! At St. Mary of Vernon, the RCIA process is happening right now!

Individuals who would like to know more can drop in on weekly open discussion meetings – currently held on Wednes-days at 7:30 PM in the Lower Level of the Rectory. Or to connect with someone on our team for basic information or to set up an appointment to discuss specific questions or goals, contact Maureen Evers (847-362-1005 or [email protected]) or Mark Zwolski (847-644-7073 or [email protected]).

DAILY MASS DURING LENT We encourage the practice of Daily Mass during Lent. Even if you cannot attend every day, perhaps you can join us once or twice a week. The Mass schedule is as follows:

7:00 AM—Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:00 AM—Tuesday & Thursday

8:30 AM—Saturday Morning

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Stations are an old tradition in the Church, especially during Lent. The devotion began in the Middle Ages when Christians longed to make a pilgrimage to the Ho-ly Land, but found this impossible. Instead we trace the journey of Jesus along the Way of the Cross to Calvary and Resurrection in our own church by prayer and med-itation. Stations will be on

Friday evenings at 4:00 PM & 7:00 PM in the Church.

KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH There’s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)? We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this command-ment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: “The law of the LORD is perfect, / refreshing the soul” (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking.

Catholic Charities Diaper Bank

For the fourth week of Lent the recipients will be the Catholic Charities Diaper Bank. This initiative allows the agency to distribute diapers to food pantries such as our own Sharing Hands, maternity programs (such as Women's Center; Aid for Women etc.) and shelters from a central depository. The Catholic Charities Diaper Bank relies entirely on donations of diapers from parish drives, and corporate partners.

Children's diapers of all sizes are appreciated. Of course, cash is always in good taste as well.
