PARISH MISSION STATEMENT: Forming Disciples and Living Disciples

Our Card Party was fun though our attendance was down this year. The rainy evening and being cautious with COVID might have detoured people. There were lots of delicious desserts and tons of prizes to win. While the revenues for admissions were 50% less than in 2019, raffle ticket sales were only slightly less. Fewer people, but tons of raffle tickets were purchased! We were blessed with generous sponsors; corporate sponsors were up by $2,000. Expenses were up by about $900. All of this conspired to get us only about $1,000 short of the 2019 raffle of $17,357. Our net income for St Mary of the Knobs 2021 Card Party was $16,330.33.

NEW CAR UPDATE!

I began my search for a new car. My research has been completed, and I have narrowed my choices to three to five vehicles, leaning toward an SUV. With the shortage of microchips, there is a shortage of vehicles on the lots to test drive. Because of my size, I need to test drive to experience if I truly fit in the vehicle and can see out the back window. With my height, I can have a huge blind spot in many vehicles, besides my knees being in the way of the steering wheel.

Blessings,

Our CondolencesOur sincere sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Matthew Todd Thompson, son of Ron & Drucilla Thompson, who passed away. May he rest in peace.

Congratulations to these families and children who celebrated the sacrament of Baptism: Kyle &

OPENING HYMN: GLORIA FIRST READINGI: -- Genesis 2:18-24 The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man. So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called 'woman, ' for out of 'her man’ this one has been taken."

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh. The Word of the Lord: Thank be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM—Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Blessed are you who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways! For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed shall you be, and favored. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table.

27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME—OCTOBER 3, 2021

May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. May you see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel! May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

SECOND READING — Hebrews 2:9-11 Brothers and sisters: He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels, " that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers.” The Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA GOSPEL — The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." The Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. CREED OFFERTORY HYMN: I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light (Gather 593) COMMUNION ANTIPHON: "The Lord is good to those who hope in Him, to the soul that seeks him." COMMUNION HYMN: Soul of My Savior (Missal 248) RECESSIONAL HYMN: For the Beauty of the Earth (Gather 633)

Part Two on Notes About our Music Program

Last week we read that the purpose of music at Mass is for the "glory of God and the sanctifica-tion and edification of the faithful." This week, we'll continue learning more about the place of music in the Mass. But what, you may ask, about “active participa-tion”? When acclamations, gestures, and singing are integrated into the Liturgy, they can reinforce the faith within our hearts. Many people under-stand active participation to mean that everyone should always be "doing something," engaging in as much outward activity as possible. The Church, however, teaches us about the essential internal nature of active participation — in fact, even rev-erent silence is considered active participation! As the US Bishops have recently told us, "The assem-bly participates actively as they unite themselves interiorly to what the ministers or choir sing, so that by listening to them they may raise their minds to God." This is what we should strive to do, for in-stance, as the cantor sings the verses of the Re-sponsorial Psalm or as the choir sings an anthem of praise after communion. “In a culture which neither favors nor fosters meditative quiet, the art of inte-rior listening is learned only with difficulty." Here we see a way that the Holy Mass is counter-cultural; something set apart from the noisy, bus-tling world. When we take into account the fact that we are actively participating in Mass by lis-tening, we can see why the text (or "lyrics") of our songs at Mass must be carefully considered. The text should reflect sound Catholic doctrine and easily lift our thoughts to God. This is not meant to imply that there is anything wrong with congregational singing, which, on the contrary, is the "primary liturgical song." Jesus sang a psalm with his apostles at the Last Supper and we have all felt the way a proudly singing congregation can move us inwardly. At this point, I should perhaps say that my critiques are not directed at any one person or group, but rather at certain types of music as used in the sa-cred liturgy.

" Today . . . the meaning of the category "sacred music" has been broadened to include repertories that cannot be part of the celebration without violating the spirit and norms of the Liturgy itself. . . . [N]ot all forms of music can be considered suitable for liturgical celebrations." This quote from Pope John Paul II explains that not all sacred music can be admitted to the Liturgy. A particu-lar point of contention in today's Church as a whole is the state of contemporary Christian music. How do we properly evaluate the liturgical suitability of such music? I hope you'll continue reading in next week's install-ment. Thank you for reading! Laura Spalding Music Director

Prayer to St. Joseph, Defender of Life

Dearest St. Joseph, at the word of an angel, you lovingly took Mary into your home. As God’s humble servant, you guided the Holy Family on the road to Bethlehem, welcomed Jesus as your own son in the shelter of a manger, and fled far from your homeland for the safety of both Mother and Child. We praise God that as their faithful protector, you never hesitated to sacrifice for those entrusted to you. May your example inspire us also to welcome, cherish, and safeguard God’s most precious gift of life. Help us to faithfully commit ourselves to the service and defense of human life —especially where it is vulnerable or threatened. Obtain for us the grace to do the will of God in all things. Amen.
