ST. MARY CHURCH CHILLICOTHE, OHIO January 8, 2017

TODAY’S LITURGY

FIRST READING: Isaiah 60:1-6 SECOND READING: Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6 GOSPEL: Matthew 2:1-12

In an age when we have gone to the moon and back, and at a time when we are planning to explore the planets and the stars, talk of camel caravans and magi may seem a bit silly. So indeed it is, if we view Sunday’s readings as astrophysicists and not as poets.

Talk of Jerusalem’s splendor and the wealth of the nations being brought to her, and the existence of justice and profound peace in that troubled land makes little sense when we view the plight of the Palestinian people. Nor does it make any sense if we view Sunday’s readings as historians and not as poets.

Talk of magi following a star which acts as directional signal and acting based on the dreams they dream appears to be incomprehensible. So it is, if we try to understand Sunday’s readings as facts and not as folklore.

Matthew, the gospel writer, was a poet and a storyteller when he speaks of events that happened after the birth of Jesus. Matthew’s purpose was to show that Jesus fulfilled many biblical prophecies, which came to be understood as referring to the Messiah. That Messiah was to come through the direct intervention of God.

The prophecy from Micah combined with 2 Sam 5:2 envisioned the Messiah as one who “would shepherd my people Israel.” But Matthew knew that this concept of a Messiah was too narrow. Matthew knew that he would be a Messiah for all people, not just for Israel. In Paul’s terms, “in Christ Jesus the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews.”

Matthew has interwoven a number of these themes in his story of the magi. Matthew is able to bring the Gentile world into his Gospel without even mentioning them by using the magi here. They clearly represented the Gentile world, whether they were astrologers, kings, magicians, wise men or whatever other roles they have enjoyed down through the ages. They were not Jews in any case and that is Matthew’s point. It was these gentiles from the east who came to acknowledge Israel’s king/Messiah even before Israel herself would.

By contrast Herod, the Roman appointed king, had his religious experts (priests and scribes) and the words of the prophets to reveal the identity of this new “born” king of the Jews, but even aided by that they were not able to see what these strangers saw. Nor does the contrast stop there. The magi seek out the newborn king in order “to pay him homage.” Herod seeks him out in order to do away with him as the story will later unfold. The magi are helped along on their journey by the guidance of a star. Warned against it in a dream, they do not return to Herod, as he had requested.

It is clear that Matthew made use of both Isaiah 60 (Sunday’s first reading) and Psalm 72 (Sunday’s responsorial psalm) as inspiration for this Magi story which helps to explain why the magi later became the “kings” we sing about (“the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute”).Their meeting in Bethlehem with the child and his mother becomes the ultimate fulfillment of messianic hopes and expectations, when they present him with their riches.

In the end, it is poetry, not politics that will serve us better in trying to understand this feast of the Epiphany The mysterious appearance of the Magi to do homage to Israel’s king symbolizes the easy accessibility to this Messiah. One needn’t be a religious expert or political leader to discover his identity. One needs only a sense of poetry and openness to the creative novelty of God.

150TH

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Monthly activities are planned next year as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone and building of our magnificent church. For the months of February & April, we will highlight our rich history. We need your help! Take some time to browse for what pictures, brochures or whatever commemorative items your family might have stored away pertaining to the church. Maybe you have a photo from your Grandparents wedding at St. Mary’s or a group First Communion picture, prayer cards, etc. These are just a few examples of the history we are looking to have displayed. We want to provide parishioners the opportunity to exhibit these in the Family Life Center. Watch for more information in the coming weeks. If you have any questions, please contact Joan D’Antoni at 740-774-2916 or Frank Hirsch at 740-775-7056.

CHURCH CELEBRATION We are planning the 150th Celebration of the Church building. We would love for anyone interested in being involved in the planning committee to please join us for the next meeting, on Monday, January 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Office. These meetings will continue on the 3rd Monday of every month at the same time. Everyone is welcome! We need your input.

FIRST EUCHARIST PARENT MEETING There will be a parent meeting, for those seeking First Eucharist for their children, on Sunday, January 22 at 12:00 p.m. in the Parish Office.

THE GRIEF RELIEF SUPPORT PROGRAM is offered again, on Saturday, January 21 , at 10:00 a.m. The need was identified to create a program to address the spiritual, psychological, and practical issues that arise when a loss is experienced, due to the death of a loved one, or other reason, such as divorce. A series of meetings will provide attendees with a chance to understand the process of grieving, and will give parishioners an opportunity to support one another in this difficult process. Mass will be celebrated at the beginning of each session, and a discussion time will follow each presentation. All are welcome. If transportation is needed, please call the parish office to make those arrangements.

ONLINE GIVING is now working. Please call the Parish Office if you would like to participate in the initial trial.
