Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports the Church in more than 20 countries that still struggle to re-cover from Communist rule. Funds from this collection support pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary forma-tion. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this region. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection next week. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/ccee.

Mark your calendars and save the date! We will be having a potluck on Friday, February 14 to celebrate Valentine's Day : Dia del amor y la amistad. (The day of Love and Friendship) The festivities will begin at 6:30pm. The Collins family will be providing smoked meats. Plan to bring your best side dish or dessert. We will be drawing the winners of the beef raffle. Come join in the fun!

Attention All Women of the Parish! A “Second Sunday Fellowship” ladies’ group has formed that meets the second Sunday of each month after CCD at the Café on Broadway. We meet for monthly fellowship and faith-sharing, as well as to plan family events for the parish and participate in bible study/devotionals. A committee will be forming from our group to start planning VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL for the week of JULY 27-31, 2020!!! We are also getting ready to order the Lenten devotional “Here, Too,” published by the online Catholic women’s community “Blessed is She (BIS)” (blessedisshe.net). In this daily devo-tional, which only takes minutes a day to par-ticipate, is included: re-discovery of God in all the usual and unusual places and times of our lives (desert, home, road, storms, mountain, garden, tomb); two personal essays a week div-ing into this theme; three days of Sacred Scrip-ture with self-reflection questions; praying through the Psalms; and additional journal space as well. The devotionals are $25 but please don’t let cost prevent your purchase, as we can gather funds to assist! Contact Heidi Rippy (479-790-6039) for more information and/or to reserve a devotional ASAP, as Ash Wednesday is February 26th.

Today Sunday February 9, is our Parish Council Meting at 4pm in the parish office.

The Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a informational meeting on Saturday, February 15, 2020, at 9:00am in the parish hall regarding the recent incidents in todays world. Your generous re-sponse is appreciated; your money will be administered wisely. Through CASA we can open our hearts and our wallets to the Lord and welcome him with all that we have and all that we are as faithful servants.

Did you know that every Baptized and Confirmed Catholic has been given two or more gifts to share with others? We invite you to join us for the Called and Gifted class offered beginning the first week of March. Come, let the Holy Spirit enter your heart and set you on fire with the gifts God has given you to build up his Kingdom on earth. There will be a sign-up table in the church vestibule after Mass on February 8,9, 15 & 16.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time What does it mean to be salt and light? If we listen carefully to Jesus’ words, we gain some direction. To be salt means to bring taste, zest, and joy to life. We are asked to liven things up a bit by allowing the joy of our faith to spill over into the lives of others. Only a sincere and deep rela-tionship with God can freshen up humanity and set it on proper course. To be light means that our faith must translate into ac-tion so that we can be Christ for others and extend the same arm of mercy and compassion that Christ did. Our acts of pi-ety, then, cannot be directed solely at our-selves. Prayer is never about self-benefit but must always be directed toward union with God, deepening our relationships with one another and learning how to be ef-fective stewards of the beautiful universe God has entrusted to our care. The Master gives us wise direction in terms of how we can best become the salt and light he desires. Listen carefully to the Beatitudes. Think about the oppression and alienation that exists in our world, the vio-lence and prejudice, the anger and the hatred, the fear and the shame. All of these things require action. The poor need food, housing, and clothes. Hatred must be replaced by love. Retaliation and vio-lence by forgiveness. Our thoughts and speech can become more like Christ. We can change and continue to change. Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman said, “To live is to change and to be per-fect is to have changed often.” But it doesn’t end with just offering the bandages needed to heal wounds. It must go deeper. We must ask ourselves what has happened that we have found ourselves in this place with these wounds and divisions. What are their causes? To-gether we must address these systemic problems, politically and spiritually, and face the truth. Only then will we truly be salt and light. But then again, we may not like what the light shows us.
