“Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.”

This is the second Sunday in Ordinary Time. The litur-gical ordinary time is anything but ordinary. It is a won-derful time, once again to familiarize about the actions of Jesus. The actions of Jesus reveal to us the person of Jesus. The person of Jesus is very important. The person of Jesus saves humanity. This is the will of the Father. This is also the will of Jesus. The Psalm for today speaks of his willingness to follow the will of the Fa-ther. This is why it is an example for us. If our Lord Je-sus is willing to do the will of the Father, then we his disciples should follow the example. We have to make the Psalm of this liturgy as our own saying, “Here am I, Lord, and I come to do your will.” This day we read the Gospel from St. John. The Gospel begins with saying that John the Baptist saw Jesus com-ing toward him. The question is why this meeting? Is it time for to Jesus begin his public ministry? John was sent before Jesus to announce the arrival of Jesus to the people of the chosen ones of God. John says, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world!” Lamb is a very familiar word for Jewish. They use lamb for sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise to God. This word found in many Old Testament writings. God ordered the people of Israel to procure a lamb and to smear the blood of the lamb over the door posts of Jewish people’s houses. The blood on the door posts will give them the needed safety from the avenging an-gel. The blood of the lamb will save them from death. There are prophets who called them as lambs when they were persecuted. In the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah described his experience of the persecution as a “Lamb which one leads to the slaughter.” Prophet Isiah de-scribes himself, as a lamb led to the slaughter, like a sheep before the shearers, silent and not opening its mouth.” [Jer. 11/19, Is. 53/7. The Jewish people are very much aware of this term and its implications. This is why John the Baptist saying, “Behold the Lamb of God.” He does not stop with the term, Behold the Lamb of God, he adds to it saying, “Who takes away the sins of the world.” John gave further evidence to the Messiah. God had given him the sign to recognize the Savior. What were the signs? The Gospel explains today, saying, “He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” John testified further saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with wa-ter told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with Holy Spirit’.” The Gospel concluded saying, “Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.” Jesus is the Lamb, who will surely save us all. Let us once again say the Psalm, “Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.” Fr. John.
