NNovember 11, 2018 ~Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

This poor widow . . . (Mark 12:43) Let’s take a short Bible quiz based on today’s readings. 1. “The fatherless and the _________ he sustains” (Psalm 146:9).

2. The woman who helped Elijah in today’s first reading is often called “the _________ of Zarepath” (Luke 4:26). 3. The woman who put two small coins into the Temple treasury in today’s Gospel was a ___________ (Mark 12:42). If you answered “widow” for all three, you’re right. From Ruth and Naomi to the old woman in today’s Gospel, widows play an important role in Scripture. Along with orphans, they are considered the most vulnerable of people. And it’s because of how humble, needy, and powerless they are that God has a special love for them. It’s also why he commands us to treat them in a special way. The heroine in today’s Gospel had nothing to offer people. She had no money, no social status, no influence that would help anyone get ahead. She was probably too old to care for children or to do even menial housework. All anyone could do was give to her—care for her, protect her, and treat her with respect and honor. Jesus himself seemed to have a special love for widows. He went out of his way to raise the son of a lonely widow from the dead (Luke 7:11-17). He told a story about a persistent widow to teach us how to pray (18:1-8). And he made sure his disciples saw the generosity of the widow in the Temple. Jesus has commanded us also to have a special care for widows—along with widowers, orphans, the vulnerable, and the needy as well. Some of them are hanging on by a thread, and they need our help. What’s more, caring for God’s beloved poor also has the power to rescue us from selfishness, pride, and self-sufficiency. It teaches us to serve as Jesus does. In the end, it just may be what will save us.

“Lord, help me to love the widow and the orphan, not just with my thoughts, but with my hands as well.” Reprinted with permission of The Word Among Us, 7115 Guilford Dr #100, Frederick, MD 21704 Issue Date October 2018, www.wau.org, 1-800-775-9673.” page1

"Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock." Matthew 7:24 The academic year is in full swing at our Catholic schools, with our first semester drawing to a close! The value for the month of November is DOCILITY. Students are always learning to be active, present listeners. Listening to each other, and respecting others' viewpoints, not only helps a child learn new information, it helps them to grow as a person. Catholic schools offer children entering Pre-K through 8th grade a secure learning environment, where respect, courtesy, and service to others are always part of the curriculum. Are you considering a Catholic education for your child? Learn how Catholic schools inspire hearts and minds to succeed:

In 2017-18, Catholic elementary schools registered the fourth consecutive year of improved Math and ELA test scores, surpassing the gains of both NY State and City schools

Over 99% of our high school seniors graduate, and 99% of them go on to college or post-secondary education

Financial Assistance and Scholarships are available for qualifying families at participating schools making tuition more affordable than ever!

Have you ever received a phone call, thought it was a friend, and ended up with a stranger on the line? Does your phone ring all day with emergencies concerning your loved ones? We have all been scammed and it seems like more and more every day. To help us sort out this

problem, Brian Jones, Outreach Coordinator for The Office for the Aging, has some helpful hints. On Thursday, November 15th at 7:00pm in the Nativity Center there will be a program, sponsored by the Health Care Ministry, when Brian Jones will discuss this topic. He will also share with us services that are available to Seniors who live in Dutchess County. Come join us and become more enlightened about this timely and annoying topic!

GIVE A GIFT, WARM THE WORLD

Can you join our "Adopt-A-Family" program by "adopting" a family in need, right here in Dutchess County? Our

annual St. Nicholas Adopt-A-Family program has compiled "wish list" gift ideas for each family. You can shop for gifts or have us do the shopping for you. Each of these families has struggled. Their household budgets have provided for the basics, leaving nothing for Christmas gifts or to make it a special time for their children. To be matched with a family or single family member you can: Visit our St. Nicholas Link or call us directly (845) 452-1400. Last year CCCSDC assisted over 100 Dutchess County families. With the generosity of people such as yourself, we can assist 100 families again this year. THANK YOU FOR WARMING THEIR WORLD. MAY YOU AND YOURS ENJOY A BEAUTIFUL HOLIDAY SEASON.
