Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23, 2018

Hopefully while reading your copy of the St. Louis Review last week you noted the results of the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. Thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers throughout the Archdiocese over $16,000,000 was raised to aid in the mission

of the Church in St. Louis, a mission set before us by Christ himself. So many people will be helped by these funds—children in schools, priests in nursing homes, homeless looking for shelter, those afflicted with addiction seeking help to overcome their illness, missionaries serving in Bolivia, couples preparing for marriage, and—closer to home—teachers improving their knowledge of the faith and seminarians answering God’s call to the priesthood. All throughout the archdiocese people of all ages from all walks of life benefit from grants funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal. You who donated to this cause helped improve the lives of many people. Thank you! Parishioners of St. Mark may congratulate yourselves on surpassing the goal set for us. Our goal was $49,280. Thus far, pledges and donations total $58,499. This is fantastic and it proves that our people are willing to sacrifice for the benefit of others, something we were taught to do by Jesus. “I have told you this so that my joy may be complete.” Jn. 15:11. Truly, it is joyful to know that many lives are improving because you helped them. In a letter I received from Archbishop Carlson he said, “St. Mark’s is to be commended in meeting and exceeding your published financial goal, fulfilling the Appeal’s motto, “Build the Church.” If St. Mark Parish had not exceeded the goal, I would not have the good news to report that the entire Archdiocese surpassed the goal of $14,200,000 by raising $16,018,981.” The Archbishop also included, “I also want to mention one other issue that may impact the Annual Catholic Appeal….the clergy abuse scandal. While we have been forthright and proactive on this issue in our archdiocese, we should not ignore the impact that global events may have on our local Appeal. I assure parishioners that none of the money raised by this Appeal is used to defend or settle criminal or civil lawsuits related to the abuse scandal.” I am thankful to all in the parish who helped organize our contribution to the Appeal. Your work and dedication was so important to the successful participation of St. Mark Parish. As I write this on a sunny and warm Tuesday morning I pray for God’s blessings upon our Fall Festival. While the forecast for this day is not exactly what we prefer, I am sure that God’s presence will be evident at the festival. Many will volunteer and many will enjoy the fruits of the volunteers’ labor. God’s goodness will shine in the faces of many people, even if the sun will not. No matter what has happened as you read this, I am honored to be part of the great efforts of our parishioners who make the Fall Festival happen. May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

Dear Parishioners,

Thank you for your pray-ers for a successful testing week for our students. It is nice that

students can celebrate the end of a hard week with our Fall Festival. Next week our 2nd grade parents will meet to learn about preparation for First Reconciliation and our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are invited to attend High School Nights so they can start thinking about and planning their next steps in their education. On Friday, September 28th, the teachers will play the 8th grade in our annual volleyball game. The game is sched-uled to begin at 1:30 in the afternoon. You are invited to attend if you don’t mind an extremely loud gymnasium and screaming students. While I can’t promise all volleyball rules are perfectly followed, I can say that it is an afternoon of fun. Julie Bingham

Fr. Hambrough will be attending the Convocation for Priests of the Archdiocese in the Ozarks from October 8-12. Consequently, there will only be

one Mass on those weekdays, beginning at 6:30 am.

Special thanks to parishioners for making donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box (located in the back of Church). Your contributions in the Poor Box in August came to $1,321. But, once again, the calls for help were great. In August we served 24 families consisting of a total of 103 persons. We helped these families with their electric and gas bills, rent, car expenses and gasoline, food vouchers, healthcare/prescriptions and Thrift Store furniture, clothing and bedding. In total, these client services amounted to $4,586. We had to dip into our reserves and also ask for financial assistance from the District office. Please help us to continue serving those of our neighbors in need. Envelopes for making St. Vincent de Paul donations are located on top of the Poor Box in the back of the Church, or you may simply place your offering in the Poor Box. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely, St. Mark’s St. Vincent de Paul Members

“Rosary Coast to Coast” on October 7th at 3:00 pm

On Sunday, October 7, Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, the US–through Rosary Coast to Coast– will join with our International brothers and sisters to pray for our respective nations.

Americans across the country are invited to pray Rosary Coast to Coast wherever they can gather: in parish Churches; in front of state capitols; along the US coasts and borders; as families; or while viewing the live-stream of the National Rosary Rally. Rosary Coast to Coast will take place at 4 pm Eastern, 3 pm Central, 2 pm Mountain, 1 pm Pacific. The reasoning behind these times will be to support all time zones in full participation of

events, aside from Sunday Masses. Indeed, the Heart of the Nation will be Immersed in the Hour Of Mercy. The National Rosary Rally will take place, as well, in front of the US Capitol on this day. They will begin with Mass at St. Peter’s on Capitol Hill followed by a Rosary procession to the Rally site. The Rosary Rally will be live-streamed.

If the Blessed Mother is “calling you” to attend, plan on meeting me on Union Rd. at 2:45 pm in front of St. Mark’s Church so we can be ready to recite the Glorious Mysteries at 3:00 pm.

Don’t forget to bring your Rosary. Thank you, Denise Plumley
