In 2006 my wife, Susan was baptized as a Catholic after completing the RCIA process with Father David Turner of the St. Procopius Abby. Susan’s association with St. Procopius Abby, other clergy, and Benedictine University as an Office Manager, Student Advisor for students seeking a Master’s Degree in Organiza-tional Behavior, helped build a deep foundation for her faith. Father David was a fountain of spiritual knowledge and an inspiration to both Susan and indirectly to me. Watching Susan become more and more involved and fulfilled made me realize, I wanted to learn about, focus on, and better understand my relationship with God. I began my RCIA journey in the fall of 2018 because of the positive impact becoming Catholic had on Susan. But I also felt the need to associate myself with the Catholic faith and other Catholics. I began attending Mass and

could feel the spiritual strength of the congregation. This strength has led me to see our church as a living, evolving and growing spiritual entity. With the help of my RCIA group and in particular my sponsor, Danny Champion, I want to be baptized in the spring of 2019.

Lent is the perfect time to pray for the people and purposes dear to our hearts. All parishioners are invited to complete a Prayer Intention Card before Mass on the Sundays of Lent. It’s easy to do:

1. Write down the name of the person needing prayers and/or your prayer intention on the card.

2. Place it in the special basket in the narthex before entering the church.

The basket of Prayer Intention Cards will be brought up and placed near the altar during every Sunday Mass during Lent and offered to God, along with our sacrificial gifts.

Social media are anti-social, anti-human and anti-Christian when they are used to increase differences, fuel suspicion, spread lies and vent prejudice, Pope Francis said in his message for World Com-munications Day. The Catholic Church and all people of goodwill see great potential in social media when the "net" and "networks" bring people togeth-er, help them share useful information and educate one another, he said. But, the pope wrote, people's "social web identity is too often based on opposition to the other, the person outside the group: We define ourselves starting with what divides us rather than with what unites us, giving rise to suspicion and to the venting of every kind of prejudice -- ethnic, sexual, religious and other." Here's how Pope Francis put it in his apostolic exhortation, Laudato Si, a few years ago: True wisdom, as the fruit of self-examination, dialogue, and generous encounter between persons, is not acquired by a mere accumulation of data which eventually leads to overload and confusion, a sort of mental pollution. Real relationships with others, with all the challenges they entail, now tend to be re-placed by a type of internet communication which enables us to choose or eliminate relationships at whim, thus giving rise to a new type of contrived emotion which has more to do with devic-es and displays than with other people and with nature.

Religious Education

(Preschool—5th)

Dear God, help us to use these forty days to show our love for You First Communion The parent/child bread service is (choice of) Tuesday, March 12th and Wednesday, March 13th. Families A-L should bring a bread—refer to the list of bread types needed (cut up into bite size pieces). Families M-Z should bring sparkling grape juice to share. For planning purposes it would help if those bringing bread told us what day they plan to come and which bread they are bringing

As our children prepare to enter more fully into the Christian life through the Sacrament of Eucharist, we invite them to receive special blessings. The final blessing (candle) will be the weekend of March 16th and 17th.

Spring Break Spring break begins on Monday, March 25th. Classes will resume on Monday, April 1st.

Lenten Stations of the Cross Beginning Monday, April 15th, the last half hour of each RE class will include the Stations of the Cross presented in church by our 5th graders. All are invited to attend. The schedules are: Monday, April 15th at 4:00 pm Tuesday, April 16th at 4:00 pm and 5:15 pm Wednesday, April 17th at 4:00 pm and 5:15 pm

Children’s Liturgy of the Word After opening prayers children are invited to attend "Liturgy of the Word." They are escorted to the Upper Room where they gather for an interactive session that helps the children learn the readings of the day in language and activities they'll easily understand. The program is offered at the Sunday 8 and 10 am Masses.

Purification of Our Souls Sir 2:1-11; Mk 9:30-37 (There is an opportunity to let go of oneself and to find

something totally unexpected, namely, the divine identity being offered to us.)

“For in fire gold and silver are tested, and worthy people in the crucible of humiliation.”

This is from the Book of Sirach, and it is, in a way, foreshadowing Jesus’ comments in the gospel about the Son of Man. As we grow up on this planet we tend to form an identity; first and foremost we identify with our bodies, as Sigmund Freud said the ego is a body ego. Ego means a sense of identity. The first thing we identify with is our bodies. But as the Sufis point out, it is not only our bodies we identify with and own, but we also own our feelings, our passions, our aversions, our likes, our dislikes, our convictions, our opinions, and so on and so on.

Now none of this is bad, but none of it is really who we are either. So gradually the lower has to fall away so that we can embrace the higher. And ultimately the higher, the highest is the Son of God. We are all created in the image of the Son of God to become

one with the Son of God, and thus know the Father and experience the love of God in the Spirit, to actually share in the very life of God. But we don’t realize to what extent we obstruct this, because we are so full of ourselves. This is why the mystics talk about the purgative way; it means purging away ourselves, the stuff that’s in the way of God filling us.

So in Sirach the idea is that there is a kind of purgation; just as the purification of gold and silver, so there’s the purification of our own souls. And the crucible is, in this particular text, humiliation because in humiliation the person we think we are is devastated. And that is an opportunity to let go of it, although some may not use that opportunity correctly and in fact embrace it all the more strongly, and along with it the pain of humiliation and become extremely negative and depressed. And I’ve met such people. But there is an opportunity to let go of oneself and

to find something totally unexpected, namely, the divine identity being offered to us. It’s much lighter than the ordinary heaviness of human awareness. But it is always available because it’s God’s plan for us to embrace it and to become one with him.

Now for some reason this plan of God required Jesus to completely give up his divinity and to pour himself into our humanity in a type of exchange, so that in his humanity he could pour that out too in total self-giving, which he did on the cross. And this enables all of us to empty ourselves and therefore receive this great gift of God, which is already present on our altars in the body, the blood, the soul, and the divinity of Christ in the Eucharist. And God’s prayer, if you want to say that, God’s prayer is that the reality of our communion in the Eucharist become a conscious companion at all times.
