Father’s Day Blessing Loving God, we give you thanks for the many gifts you have given us; the gift of life, the gift of those who love us and especially, today, we thank you for the gift of our fathers. We ask your blessing upon our fathers who gave us rules to live by, standards to uphold, joys to cherish, faith to live by, hopes worth dreaming of and who blessed our lives with their unselfish and unconditional love. We remember our fathers who have died and for the unique way they revealed for us your love. We ask that you keep them in your care until the time comes for us to join them in your Kingdom. Protect and guide them. Keep them in your care and grant that their children may always honor them with a spirit of profound respect. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord. AMEN.

ROSARY NOVENA FOR THE

PARISH

Beginning this weekend, and for nine consecutive Saturdays (August 11), we will pray the rosary as a parish at 5:00 PM (before the Vigil Mass.) The intention of this Novena of

Rosaries is for the continued healing of our parish. All are invited to participate in this powerful prayer to Mary under the guidance of our patron, St. Maximilian Kolbe, who knew the power of Mary’s intercession.

COOKS NEEDED FOR THE DAY ROOM

St. Agnes Day Room is in urgent need of permanent cooks as well as substitute cooks, especially for the summer. Cooks prepare a part of the meal in their homes and deliver it hot (if appropriate) and ready to serve to the Day Room by 11:15 on the day assigned. There are openings for June as well as sup positions in July and August. Summer is very busy with regular cooks going on vacation and the increased numbers of school children who are attending our camps who would normally eat lunch at school. Please contact Mary Barcus at [email protected] or 610-431-1944 if you are able to help out or if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your generous consideration in this matter.

SAFE COMMUNION HOSTS In the past, Catholic Canon Law prohibited use of

additives or “foreign matter” in the Eucharist because the host had to contain enough gluten from wheat to give the

confection of bread. Several years ago, a group of Benedictine sisters in Missouri developed a

low-gluten host that contained just enough wheat to satisfy Cannon Law, but not enough to cause damage for

those who have celiac disease.

The Catholic Church is firmly rooted in Scripture and Tradition. In keeping with the belief that Jesus used a wheat bread at the Last Supper, the Church has required

that breads used for communion be made with wheat and contain gluten.

The low gluten hosts made by Sisters from the Congregation of Benedictine Sisters

of Perpetual Adoration, made with pregelatinized wheat starch and water, has a gluten content of less than 0.01%. It is made, stored, and shipped in a designated

area free from all other wheat products. (continued on page 5)

FORTNIGHT FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM: RELIGIOUS LIBERTY CONFERENCE

In response to the government-proposed HHS Mandate that attacks the religious freedom of many Americans, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has declared a Fortnight for Religious Freedom from June 21 to July 4, a period devoted to prayer and education for the protection of our most precious freedom. In response, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is hosting a Religious Liberty Conference, which will take place on Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 9:00am to 12:30pm. It will be repeated on Sunday, June 24, 2012 from 12:00pm to 3:30pm. The cost is $15.00. Lunch will be served. Please register at: [email protected] or 215-587-5661. Questions can be directed to: Steven Bozza, Respect Life Office, 215-587-5661, [email protected] or Meghan Cokeley, Office for Formation of the Laity, 215-587-5630, [email protected]

How much gluten?

Each low-gluten host is produced and packaged in a dedicated environment. The hosts are made separately by hand, unlike common altar breads which are stamped

out of thin sheets of bread by a cutter. Therefore each host is a slightly different size and shape. Most importantly, the final product has been checked for gluten content.

The analysis was performed by the American Institute of Baking (AIB International) using the ELISA (enzyme- linked, immunosorbent assay). According to Sister Lynn,

the result of this analysis was reported as “no gluten detected.” Since the lowest limit of gluten detection of this analysis is 0.01%, the hosts are labeled as having

0.01% gluten content. Realistically speaking, the actual gluten content is most likely lower because no gluten could be detected by this assay. The tests used were not

capable of detecting gluten at lesser amounts so there is no way to know just how much lower than 0.01% the hosts really are.

The low gluten altar breads were featured in an article in the magazine Gluten-Free Living. The editorial and accompanying write-up cited data from the Center for

Celiac Research that showed that the less than 0.01% gluten content of these

breads would be perfectly safe for most celiacs. The article states The measurement cited here, 0.01%, represents 100 PPMs (parts per million). But

the more important number is 37 micrograms, because it is daily exposure to gluten that counts. The best current information shows that 10 milligrams a day should be

safe. Ten milligrams is the same as 10,000 micrograms. If you divide 37 micrograms into

10,000 micrograms, you will find that you would have to eat 270 wafers every day to reach the danger point. At most, celiacs would consume one wafer per day or

about 0.04% (four tenths of one percent) of the amount considered dangerous.

Approval from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops The new hosts received the blessing of the Catholic Church. Enclosed with each

package of hosts is an insert quoting the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Secretariat for the Liturgy:

“The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration Clyde Missouri have

developed a low-gluten host. The total gluten content of this product is 0.01%; its contents of unleavened bread and water and free of additives

conform to the requirements of the Code of Canon Law, canon 924.2. This “low-gluten” content is still enough gluten to confect bread for the

Eucharist. Many gluten-intolerant persons may be able to consume it or some portion of it, but are strongly advised to check with their personal

physician in advance. This product is the only true, low-gluten altar bread known to the Secretariat and approved for use at Mass in the United

States.”

Available at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church We would like to inform those persons who suffer from celiac disease or wheat

allergies that low-gluten hosts as authorized by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will soon be available. Please call Fr. Capizzi at the Rectory (610-399-6936)

if you need to receive low-gluten hosts so that we may plan accordingly.

REFLECTION:

11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Two thousand years ago, Christ’s Church started off like a small mustard seed. It

has grown and matured to be a huge plant with many branches. I am one of

those branches. Christ brings life to my branch and assigns me a specific task. He

calls me to participate in the great mission of his Church. Do I realize and

relish how great it is to be a Catholic, how much good the Church does, how I am

called to be a link that will bring others to experience the same goodness I have

experienced?
