PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Welcome On behalf of the Community, I would like to welcome students and families back to the final term. This term we are privileged to have three loyal St Joseph’s Regional College teachers back on board for 2013 and beyond. Welcome to Mrs Kellie Croft, Mrs Anne Twomey and Mrs Claire Goldie (pictured). It is wonderful to have you back. Staff Development Day As you are aware St Joseph’s Regional College continues to aspire for all of our community to be working together to become the best people they can be. Our commitment to Excellence in learning is a fundamental part of what we do here at the College. I would like to pay special tribute to the KLA Leaders: Mr Damian Bennie, Mr Chris Delaney, Mrs Janine Handley, Mr Damien Kelly, Mr Phil Pares, Mrs Brigitte Rieger, Mrs Lesley Rosenbaum, Mrs Claudette Stace, Ms Nora Swain, Mr Jason Warneken, Mr Barry Watson and particularly Leader of Curriculum, Mr Ian Lutton for their tremendous organisation on the day. Below is a short report on the National Curriculum In-service Day.

On Tuesday, the staff development day saw the continued enhancement of teaching and learning programs for the implementation of the Australian Curriculum in NSW in 2014. Next year will see a variety of new syllabi introduced into Years 7 and 9 in English, Mathematics, Science and History, as part of the move towards a standardised national curriculum. This professional development day provided an excellent opportunity for the finalisation of what has been a two year implementation process. Staff involved in other Key Learning Areas focussed on a variety of areas including the continued incorporation of technology into all facets of the teaching and learning programs as well as assessment and resourcing. Finally with the commencement of the new term students are encouraged to focus on their preparation over the next eight weeks so that they will be prepared for their final exams in weeks 9 and 10 of the term. Mr Ian Lutton, Leader of Curriculum

Finally, I would like to congratulate the following Year 12 students who have been successful in gaining Gap Year Traineeships at St Joseph’s Regional College in 2014.

FESTA CHRISTI This coming week the following opportunity will be presented to the Year 9 students. Festa Christi is a gathering for selected Year 9 students from Parish Secondary Schools of the Diocese to celebrate their faith at a Diocesan level. The Gathering will be a chance to bring students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate with other young people who practice their faith. The activities will be a mixture of large and small sharing groups as well as celebrating the Eucharist together. The program has been geared to meet the needs of these Year 9 students. The gathering will be an overnight experience that will allow students to build relationships with other students from throughout the Diocese as well as a chance for students to talk and share about their faith journey. What: Festa Christi – a youth gathering for students from every Parish school in

the Southern Region of the Diocese. When: Thurs 14th – Fri 15th November 2013 Where: Coffs Camping and Conference Centre, Bonville Cost: Nil. All transport, food and accommodation expenses will be met by the

Catholic Schools Office.

A large number of students usually express an interest in this event. We can, however, only offer twelve places (6 males/ 6 females). Any student who would like to be considered is asked to write a brief statement supporting their nomination on the information sheets that will provided when this opportunity is presented.

SLEEP OUT

Every night across Australia, over 100,000 people are homeless. Nearly half of these are under the age of 25. The Port Macquarie-Hastings area has up to 125 young people reported to be homeless on any given night.

On October 25th (Friday, Week 3), St Joseph's Regional College will be holding its first ever sleepout. This will mean that for one night, 14 hours, you will sleep rough like many do each night across Australia. No lollies, no soft drink, no mobile phones. Get an insight into what it’s like to be homeless for a night.

See Jasmin for more information if you are interested.

LIBRARY NEWS Year 11 Book Return Year 11 have been advised that all their Preliminary textbooks need to be returned by Wednesday of Week 3, after which they will be billed for these items. Emails have been sent to each student outlining which titles are to be returned. Please assist your child to attend to this important process.

Year 9 iPad Rollout Late last term, the Library played a part in the rollout of the iPads to Year 9. All Year 9 students attended a session in the Library where they were shown how to access and borrow from our growing ebook Library using the Overdrive app. We explored the SJRC app, with particular reference to the ability to log in to the Library catalogue to better manage loans, reservations etc. Finally, we trialled the Easy Harvard Referencing app which promises to make creating bibliographies when researching so much easier. Gladys Milroy Next week, we will be hosting a visit by respected Indigenous author Gladys Milroy. Gladys is involved in the Watermark Literary Muster based at Kendall, and will be addressing one of our senior HSC English classes on the notion of “belonging”. We are very much looking forward to meeting Gladys.

Belonging Our new cohort of Year 12 students are about to commence the Area of Study – Belonging. Over the next two weeks all Senior English classes will visit the Library to browse and borrow from the over 400 items we have in our catalogue for “belonging”. They will also be introduced to an electronic resource which you can view at http://pmreglism.libguides.com/Belonging Like us on FaceBook – St Joseph’s Regional College Library. YEAR 11 - Young People and Risk Taking

Part ies - Wi l l You Al low Alcohol a t Your Adolescent ’s Par ty?

Many parents and carers will be helping young people in their family celebrate birthdays, special occasions, finishing their school year or leaving school.

It is time for careful planning so that everyone enjoys themselves. Some parents may not be aware of their responsibilities in relation to supplying alcohol to under 18’s.

Regardless of where the function will be held, it is against the law to obtain for, or supply alcohol to anyone under 18 years of age - even at private parties. This activity is called secondary supply of alcohol - an offence that carries a maximum penalty of $5,500 per offence or $11,000 and 12 months prison in very serious circumstances. On the spot fines of $550 can also be issued by police.

This information comes to you from the NSW Department of Liquor, Gaming and Racing. Check their website for further information: www.olgr.nsw.gov.au/liquor_info_young_people_2nd_party.asp

Points to consider:

What do you do if an underage guest arrives with alcohol?

What do you do if they arrive intoxicated?

What do you do if your alcohol has been consumed during the course of the party?

How can you plan a successful party that addresses these issues?

It is much easier to plan and control what happens at your next party if you follow some simple guidelines. Here are some suggestions that can make a difference:

Ideally RSVP invitations should be issued, giving as many details as possible about times of starting and finishing, the nature of the party, a dress code, how it will be supervised and how guests will return home. Indicate guests will be required to bring their invitation for party entry.

On the invitation, suggest guest parents contact host parents to fine tune details and discuss any concerns. This will ensure parents are not pressured against their better judgement and gives everyone permission to talk about supervision, safety, alcohol and drug issues etc.

Have only one entrance or exit to make it easier to control who attends your party.

Guest lists should be kept to a manageable size. If guest numbers are large, ask other parents to assist with supervision or consider hiring security personnel.

Host parents need to be aware of appropriate return transport for guests and/or provide overnight, supervised accommodation.

Make it clear in advance it is an alcohol free party. (Parents are reminded of the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing penalties cited earlier).

Alcohol at parties is not easily supervised. Alcohol can easily be consumed in advance or mixed with soft drinks prior to the party. Alcohol may be left outside in cars or hidden in bushes. Although these problems can occur, they are less likely if the party is well supervised.

Confiscate BYO alcohol from under 18s. Return it to their parents or carers.

If guests are a mixture of under and over 18s, there is less control over the consumption of alcohol. A nominated adult should serve alcohol.

Page 9: St Joseph's Regional College Term 4, Wk1 111013

Actively serve non-salty food throughout the party. This will slow down alcohol consumption for those who are drinking.

Attractive non-alcoholic drinks should always be provided. For example, “Mocktails”, non-alcoholic punches, soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee, tea and of course, water.

If under 18s consume alcohol or other drugs during the party, their parents should be contacted and asked to collect them. Parents should be advised of unacceptable behaviour.

Be firm about excluding gatecrashers. If admittance is by invitation only, gatecrashers are less likely. Prior to the party, encourage students not to broadcast party details in the school community, via the Internet or mobile phone. If gatecrashers arrive, ask them to leave immediately or tell them the police will be called.

Parents should be present and provide active supervision throughout the party.

If you are planning a large party, it may be a good idea to employ security guards.

Register your party with NSW Police NSW Police have developed a range of strategies and an online Party Sign Up form which must be completed at least 72 hours before your party. Register your party at www.mynite.com.au. This way local Police will know that you are having a party and can offer support. Have emergency numbers handy and call police before the situation gets out of control. Advise neighbours of your party as common courtesy.

Messages from Catholic Schools Parent Assembly Supporting Families Dear Parents and Carers,

We have some families in our school community that are currently facing some significantly challenging medical hardships. We are trying to support these families through these difficult times by providing meals to help ease the burden. Donations of meals ie: casseroles etc would be warmly received and greatly appreciated. These care packages will be delivered to our families regularly to provide continued support and let them know they are in our thoughts. If you could find some time to help, please label your meals with ingredients and deliver them to the school office.

A big thankyou to the parents who have already contributed, your generosity was accepted with great appreciation and smiles

Thanking you in advance for your support.
