Our Sports Academy was established in the year 1999 with initial strength of 25 boys and 25 girls under the stewardship of Dr. P. NAGARAJAN, our Chief Coach along with his sports

minded committed deputies.

The Perseverance and hard work of the athletes, the sincere and dedicated efforts of our coaches and tremendous encouragement by the parents were recognized by St. Joseph’s College of Engineering. It was great dream come true for the Chairman Dr. B. BABU MANOHARAN when Prime Sports Academy was adopted by St. Josephs College of Engineering in the year 2003. Today it is wholly owned by St. Joseph’s group of institutions (St.Joseph’s College of Engineering & St.Joseph’s Institute of Technology) and it is popularly known as St. Joseph’s Sports Academy.

There was no looking back for the academy since then, bettering achievements year after year, and the academy has produced more than 34 International Athletes growing from strength to strength and to swelling number of over 300 athletes. The parents have extended their fullest co-operation for the formation of the academy. The academy extends their heartfelt thanks to the Managing Director Mrs. B. Jessie Priya and the Director Mr. Shashi sekar.

Before sharing the outstanding athletic achievements of our academy, we are proud to enumerate the various projects introduced by St. Joseph’s College of Engineering to encourage and support the budding athletes.

1. SPORTS HOSTEL : - We have started our sports hostel in the year 2006 with the strength of 40 athletes. It is the first private sports hostel of its kind in India. Now the hostel consists of 60 athletes with the achievements of National and International. The vision of the sports hostel is to produce first Olympic Medal for India in Athletics.

2. SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME :- This was introduced in the year 2005. There were about 27 athletes all over Tamilnadu who performed excellently in National competitions. They are identified under the scheme. These athletes were awarded Rs. 10,000/- each (i.e. Rs. 5000/- worth kit and other benefits Rs. 5000/- cash). These athletes were trained by various coaches who extended their services in the nook and corner of Tamil Nadu and their services were recognized by this academy without nullifying their basic interest. In the current year the total amount spent under this scheme is Rs.1,60,000.The Following are the athletes who are going to be benefited this year.

3. CASH AWARD SCHEME:- This was introduced since inception. The athletes all over Tamilnadu who performed excellently in International and National competitions are identified under this scheme and are awarded with cash prize. The amount spent under this scheme is Rs.2,22,000/- and the number of benefited athletes are 60.

4. FREE PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION:- The St. Joseph’s College of Engineering and St.Joseph’s Institute of Technology has allotted free seats for outstanding athletes and performers in various games. Under this scheme, the selected candidates get full fee concession for the curriculum and free hostel facilities. About 100 athletes and 150 performers in various games are benefitted by the management of St. Joseph’s Group of Institutions. The management is also planning to introduce other innovative projects in the near future for development of athletes/performers in various games in Tamilnadu.

5. BEST ATHLETE AWARD:- The Chairman and the Management of St. Josephs Group of Institutions has established an award for outstanding athletes from Tamilnadu who excel in the National and International level in the name “St. Josephs group of institutions “BEST ATHLETE AWARD FOR MEN AND WOMEN”. It was started in the year 2007. In the current year the best athlete award for men and women is specified to Mr.A.DHARUN and Ms.P.M.THABITHA and they are awarded with a cash prize of Rs.10,000 each.

6. BEST PARA ATHLETE AWARD:- The Chairman and the Management of St. Josephs Group of Institutions has propounded an award from 2019 for outstanding para athlete from Tamilnadu who excel in the National and International level in the name “St. Josephs group of institutions “BEST PARA ATHLETE AWARD”. The award is constituted by the Management of St. Josephs Group of Institutions and is being conferred during the month of April. In the current year the best para athlete award is specified to Mr.VIJAY SARATHY and he is being awarded with a cash prize of Rs.10,000.7. LIFETIME TIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:- The Chairman and the Management of St. Joseph’s Group of Institutions has established an award recognizing the individuals contributions over the whole of their career. It was started in the year 2014. The award is constituted by the Management of St. Josephs Group of Institutions and is being conferred during the month of April every year. In the current year the Life Time Achievement award is specified to Mr.MARUDHAIYAN - a renoved Volley ball coach who has produced many National / International women volley ball players in Tamilnadu . He has associated with St.Joseph’s Group of Institutions since 2006 as a Volley ball Coach. Mr.Maruthaiyan 72 years old now ,has done a mind flowing contribution to develop the women Volleyball players in Tamilnadu . During his period in St.Joseph’s he has produced large number of women Volleyball players in State / National level and he was the instrument to get the official status of women Volley ball players to fetch the Govt jobs under Sports Quota. He has produced 17 National level players and 60 state level players in women category.

8. COACHES TO BE HONOURED :- Every year various coaches who extended their services by identifying athletes from the nook and corner of Tamil Nadu were recognized by this academy and is awarded with cash prize. In the current year following are the list of coaches to be honoured.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE ACADEMYIN THE YEAR 2018-2019

OVERALL ACHIEVEMENTS:-• The academy won the overall championship in the Junior Inter district- State Athletic

Meet held at Chennai in 2018, and this academy won this championship 16 years consecutively.

• The academy won the Runners Up Trophy in the Open Junior State Athletic Meet held at Madurai in 2018.

• The academy won the Overall Winner Trophy in the Senior State Athletic Meet held at Tirunelveli in 2018, and this academy won this championship 15 years consectively.

MEET RECORD in 100m Hurdles in 3rd Youth Asian Athletics Championships held at Hong Kong in 2019.

• Won a gold and silver medal in 100mHurdles and 4*100mts relay and also created a NEW MEET RECORD in 100mHurdles at 63rd SGFI Nationals held at Bhopal in 2018.

• Won a Gold medal in 100mHurdles and also created a NEW MEET RECORD at 15th National Inter district Junior athletic Championship held at Visakapatinam in 2017.

2. SIVA.S• Won a Gold medal in Pole vault at Senior Federation Cup held at Patiala in 2019.

And also created a NEW NATIONAL RECORD with the performance of 5.15mts. • Won a Gold medal in Pole vault in the National Interstate Senior Athletic Championships

held at Guntur in 2018.And also created a NEW NATIONAL RECORD with the performance of 5.10mts.
