Dear Corporate Sponsor,

This is the first year for St. Joseph to participate in the Tour of Missouri, North America’s premier cycling event. We are looking to our business community to help us make this stop the best of the entire race and showcase our beautiful local area to a national audience.

On Monday, September 8th the entire Tour will start from St. Joseph, involving a peloton of 120 elite cyclists, will travel 90 miles to Downtown Kansas City. This will be the first leg of the seven day event that will culminate in St. Louis. As the Tour Start, international, national, regional, and statewide possibilities exist to attract attention to our community of sponsors.

In the Tour’s inaugural year last year, the estimated number of spectators totaled 367,566 with 255,529 unique stage spectators, which is extremely good bearing in mind it was a first-year event. The Tour attracted high-value visitors. Household travel parties averaged 2.05 people spending $560.85. In FYO7, average expenditures by domestic travelers in Missouri (per household travel party) were $307.25. Also, the median household income of Tour of Missouri spectators ($85K-$102K) compares favorably to FYO7 households traveling to Missouri at ($47.5K-$50K). This could mean more potential for increasing travel expenditures in the future.

We would like to invite you to join us in sponsoring this one-of-a-kind athletic event. We are not asking for donations; we are extending an excellent opportunity for advertising.

Please accept our invitation to join us as a local sponsor in 2008, as we welcome the world’s professional cycling community back to Missouri.

Respectfully Yours,

Bob FitzpatrickSponsorship Chair for the Local Organizing CommitteeTour of Missouri [email protected]

Professional Reviews (07)“The Tour of Missouri far exceeded all of our expectations, especially for a first-year event. They clearly did a great job getting the word out as the crowds were large, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Medalist Sports did its usual first-class execution of the event with challenging but safe courses and excellent logistics throughout. Everyone involved with the Tour of Missouri set a very high bar.”

-Sean Petty, COO, USA Cycling

“This is my 10th year in professional racing, so I’ve seen a lot of road races. This tour is a first edition, but it’s like a big tour in Europe like Paris-Nice and Tour of Switzerland. That is why I am so happy to win a big race like this one. It means a lot to me.”

-Luciano Pagliarini, Brazil, Prodir-Saunier Duval, Stage 4 winner

“The fans have been awesome. The team has really enjoyed the race. To have the third major race in the United States is special. It shows that cycling is growing in this country…for me, this was a special race being the last for Discovery Channel. It’s always great to win in the United States, especially with the type of enthusiasm we’ve seen at all levels surrounding this race.

-George Hincapie, USA Discovery Channel, Race Champion

“I have covered the Super Bowl, the NCAA Final Four and World Series, and I have to say this was better than any of those experiences. From start to finish, it was one of the best events I’ve ever seen. It far exceeded my expectations.”

-Kathleen Nelson, senior reporter, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“The Tour of Missouri is a shining example of the kinds of exciting and forward-looking things that can be accomplished through private and public partnerships. The State of Missouri, the Division of Tourism and the Hawthorn Foundation demonstrated imagination and foresight in bringing the race to the state and acting as its primary sponsor in the inaugural year. Governor Matt Blunt and Lt. Governor Peter Kinder are to be congratulated for their leadership and support of the Tour of Missouri. And the race’s corporate sponsors showed a willingness to invest in launching an initiative that shows great promise.”

- Joe Sweeney, Editor & Publisher, Ingram’s, Kansas City’s Business Magazine

“On September 10th, 2007, the Tour of Missouri was an unknown factor. The Missouri field did not have the celebrity of the Tour of California, nor the terrain of Tour de Georgia, but it did have an enthusiastic state spirit. From the opening stage to the closing stage, people evidently loved the race. From the main roads to the country lanes, people cheered the riders, enthusiastically waving banners and flags. School bands played at sprint lines, showing their local spirit. Fans jostled along the barriers, craning their necks to the riders. And at the podium presentations, the crowds surged forward to the grandstand to see the winners. No one left early to beat the crowd; they stayed and

cheered. So, as we left Missouri, we realized that the Tour of Missouri was no longer an unknown factor, but now part of the growing American Grand Tour landscape.”

Festival Events Summary

The weekend of events begins Friday, Sept. 5th with a night ride sponsored by the St. Joseph Bicycle Club for out of town visitors after a meet and greet and departure from the Coleman Hawkins Blues Festival just down the street from our base of operations at Civic Center Park behind City Hall.

We have two USA Cycling sanctioned competitive cycling races [The inaugural Tour of St. Joseph] beginning at 8:00am on both Saturday and Sunday, beginning and ending at The Bode Ice Arena.

At noon on Saturday and Sunday, we will begin the festival portion of our weekend with a health and wellness expo featuring such things as healthy cooking, women’s wellness, nutrition, and a number of activities anchored by various Heartland Entities such as The Heart Center, The Cancer Center, The Human Motion Institute, and Sports Medicine in addition to many child-oriented activities. We will have an awards presentation for the cycling races as they finish up on each day. Throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, we will also feature a children’s bicycle race, children’s bike give-a-ways, a mayor’s tricycle race, an interview with one of the world-class Tour of MO racers, an urban cycling demonstration, and a Pony Express reenactment. After our events on Saturday and Sunday, continue the fun with the Coleman Hawkins Jazz Society hosting their new Blues Festival just down the street from Civic Center Park.

On Monday the real action starts around 10:00 am as the riders from fifteen of the best cycling teams in the world will descend upon St. Joseph to take the start of the Second Annual Tour of Missouri. We look forward to seeing you all there.

September 6-8, 2008

The Tour of Missouri, North America’s premier, professional bicycle race will be starting the first leg of a 600 mile competition on September 8th – from St. Joseph! 15 teams with athletes from 22 countries will be bringing 120 of the world’s elite professional cyclists to the Tour and St. Joseph.

Preceding the Tour on the 8th, St. Joseph is organizing a festival with many events itself, including USA Cycling time trials and races on September 6th & 7th. To manage an event of this size and scale, volunteers have stepped forward to make the event a success, but more are needed. Although event-day volunteers for both the Tour (http://www.tourofmissouri.com/) and the St. Joseph events (http://www.stjosephmo.net/) are signing-up via the web, there are still a lot of ways to get involved before the event. If you would be interested in assisting organizers, following is a list of subjects and contacts for each. Contact the person listed in your area of interest: they’ll put you to work!

If possible, please

make a donation

today to keep Mark's

Who could have known that Mark could inspire such avast undertaking? Take a look at our site. You'll seehundreds of smiling faces; those children with theirnew, shiny bikes, all because of Mark and his desire tohelp others.

Thanks to the thousands of people who have helpedover the last few years to make the Children's FirstBicycle Fund such a success. We couldn't have done itwithout you.

We lost Mark four years ago, January 8, 2004. Here'sto you, Mark. We hope we've made you proud.
