BISHOP VASA’S STATE-MENT ON THE SUPREME COURT DECISION RE-GARDING MARRIAGE
The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa published the following statement from Bishop Vasa regarding the recent Suprement Court decision regarding mar-riage. “Years ago, in the Dred Scott decision, the US Supreme Court ruled that blacks were not persons. This was despite the fact that each justice presuma-bly believed all of mankind is created in God’s im-age (cf. Genesis 1:26). Similarly, today’s Justices have erred with the Obergefell case just like their predecessors did with Dred Scott, by making an egregious error in moral judgment. While five Justices may have changed marriage’s legal definition, they can never change its moral definition. As such the true definition, the moral definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman—that is ordered not only toward the couple but the procreation and education of chil-dren—remains unchanged. Just as Roe v. Wade did not settle the abortion question nearly two gen-erations ago, Obergefell v. Hodges does not settle the marriage question today.”
SAINT MARTHA July 29
Martha, Mary and their brother Lazarus were evidently close friends of Jesus. He came to their home simply as a welcomed guest. The sisters feel free to call on Jesus at their brother’s death, even though a re-
turn to Judea at that time seems almost certain death. No doubt Martha was an active sort of person. On one occasion (see Luke 10:38-42) she prepares the meal for Jesus and possi-bly his fellow guests and forthrightly states the obvious: All hands should pitch in to help with the dinner. Yet, as biblical scholar Father John McKenzie points out, she need not be rat-ed as an “unrecollected activist.” The evangelist is emphasiz-ing what our Lord said on several occasions about the primacy of the spiritual: “...[D]o not worry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear…. But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteous-ness” (Matthew 6:25b, 33a); “One does not live by bread alone” (Luke 4:4b); “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” (Matthew 5:6a). Martha’s great glory is her simple and strong statement of faith in Jesus after her brother’s death. “Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world’” (John 11:25-27). LEFTOVERS Do you suppose the authors of the four Gospels were aware of today's first reading from the second book of Kings? Of course they were. The prophet Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves in order to prove God's power. This same miracle, now multiplied by more people fed by fewer loaves, is attributed to Jesus in all four Gospels. In today's passage from John we even have the detail that the loaves were barley, reminding every pious Jew of that mira-cle that Elisha worked. Yet Jesus went into hiding when they wanted to make him king. It is the passage from Paul's letter to the Ephesians that gives us the reason for this. The power of Jesus comes from God. It is not meant to merely feed us, or to provide one group with a king. There is one Lord, one faith, one God and Father of all who works through Jesus Christ and through us all. It's a common tendency to fear for the future. Will we have enough to pay our bills? Will there be another meal tonight? What will tomorrow bring, next week, next year? We are often sure we will never have enough to last the week or go around the table. Elisha's servant in today's first reading was just like us. He looked at the available food; he looked at the hungry men. Clearly, there wouldn't be enough bread. Astonishingly, God did not promise there would be enough. God promised there would be more than enough. "There shall be some left over," the Lord assured Elisha (2 Kings 4:44). Likewise, the disciples, when faced with hungry peo-ple, decided they could never afford to feed them all. There wasn't enough money to buy so much bread. Jesus didn't make any promises to his disciples. He simply took the bread that was available--one child's lunch--blessed it and began to distribute it. While we are not told how much was left over in Elisha's story, John takes care to report that, once again, as God had promised of old, there was some left over. In fact, there were twelve baskets full of the leftovers. Jesus told us to ask his Father for all that we need (John 16:23). He advised us never to worry about whether we would have enough (Matthew 6:25). What might happen if we took these words to heart? How can we take today's Gos-pel and let it assure us that we, too, will be fed, and even given more than we need? Jesus cannot look at us and let us go hungry. He will do to-day what he did in his day. He will begin with what we al-ready have, what we are prepared to share. He will bless it, distribute it, and provide enough for everyone--more than enough.
