.Hello my name is Bertha Belmontes Smith. I moved to the area about 11 years ago to be near my daughter and her family who lived in Fortuna. During one of our many visits, we fell in love with the area and almost overnight my husband became Chief of Police of Fern-dale. My children all attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Colusa, Ca. I was a Eucharist Minister and Wedding coordinator in my hometown of Yuba City at St. Isidore’s parish. I am a Eucharist minister and a member of the Church of Assumption in Ferndale. I volunteer as much as possible with upkeep, decorating and fund raising for my parish. My husband is also very involved with our church and a member of the Pastoral board. My husband gives me credit for converting him and my mother in law to Catholicism. By loving my faith and trying to live by God’s word, I have impacted eight per-sons lives and they too have become Catholic. I look forward to meeting and working for the St Jo-seph parish. For the Spanish speaking community, I would like you to know I am fluent in Spanish and English. Please keep me in your prayers so that I may do my best as your parish secretary. Sincerely, Bertha Belmontes Smith

All invited to July Ultreya
The Catholic Cursillo Movement of the Diocese of San-ta Rosa invites all Catholics to attend a Ultreya on Sat-urday, July 20, from 2 – 4 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Seton
Church, 4595 Snyder Lane, Rohnert Park.
Ultreya means “moving forward,” and Ultreya gather-ings teach more about our faith and how to walk more closely with Jesus Christ and other Christians. Those
who want to know more about the Catholic Cursillo Movement and those who have already lived a Cursillo
weekend are invited to attend.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On a summer day, with the windows open, we may hear the sound of church bells. Bells seem to have come into church life in Irish monasteries around the seventh cen-tury, and spread around the Christian world by Irish monks on missionary jour-neys. By the eighth century, bells were standard equipment in even small parish churches. An ancient ceremony, once called the baptism of the bells, recognizes that the church bell has a voice to call people to awareness and summon them to worship, and even bestows a name on the bell. In a world without clocks or watches, the bell had an indispensable role. For calling monks in from the fields for prayer, or alerting far-flung visitors, the bell’s voice was enhanced by hoisting it high into a tower. Soon it was learned that the sound of several bells clanging together in harmo-ny imparted a sense of joy to great cele-brations, and bell towers prospered, some chock full of bells. Different combinations of rings could indicate a death, a Mass, a wedding, a fast day, the curfew at the end of day, and the Angelus. Before electrici-ty, bell-ringing was hard work indeed: the biggest bell in the Catholic world, in Cologne, Germany, weighs twenty-seven tons! There’s no substitute for the resonant roar of a mighty bell; electric chimes are not eligible for blessing! --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
