Like all of you, I suspect, I was shocked, and yet not shocked, when I learned that another atrocity occurred: someone with a gun entered a public place and began shooting, killing. And also like you, I’m exasperated by it. A friend of mine sent this posting, which I thought bears our consideration as we search for answers to the problem:

“In light of the recent school shooting in Texas, I’m waiting for the familiar and endless gun debate to begin. It’s just minutes and hours away. And it will continue a familiar tactic of the devil: distraction. The enemy desires to distract us from the real issue at the root of the problem. He fuels the angry debates between those who want more laws and gun bans and those who argue that we need fewer laws and even more guns. “We jump to “action” without listening to and understanding what really needs to be addressed: our lost, hopeless, sad, de-pressed, sick, faithless, amoral, relativist, social media obsessed (and other descriptive terms that may apply) children and young people. At the root are kids who have no sense of right and wrong or consequences of their actions; kids who have no hope; kids who are numb. We need to begin to listen and un-derstand this aspect of the problem before we “act” out of a misdirected, distracted, and fearful obligation to “do some-thing.” “We need to reach out to a generation that is lost in a culture that celebrates everything except what really counts: the love that God has for each of us created in His image and likeness. It is only Christ’s love that will save them and us. It’s time to lis-ten, understand, and then act in such a way that we can reach the hearts of our broken and wounded children. Pray . . .” This next Wednesday, 44 of our parish sons and daughters will be confirmed by Bishop Elizondo. Our Pastoral Assistant Carlie Betz has done an excellent job of preparing them. I inter-viewed each of them in the past couple weeks. Along with oth-er questions, I asked why they want to be confirmed, but also what the purpose of the sacrament is. Thankfully, fewer and fewer offer the response, “It’s my coming of age, claiming the faith for my own…” that has never, ever been the theology of this sacrament, biblically or in tradition. What it ultimately is, is a sacrament that seeks to infuse grace into them, drawing out from them the Gifts of the Spirit they received at Baptism, seeking to draw them out from themselves, to evangelize (to share the gift of faith) and to become martyrs (to lay down their lives for the salvation of others). Please pray for them. Yours in Christ, Fr. Todd O. Strange
