Dear Parents/Guardians,

This year seems to be flying by at a record pace. March is here and soon we will be approaching the Spring season. It’s hard to believe that spring break is less than a week away. Spring is a time of renewal. It is a good time to think about and recommit to the goals that your children have set for themselves. We are well into our new term and the effort the students put in will pay off in terms of their progress and academic success.

Our virtue of the month is Forgiveness. This is especially significant given our liturgical season. During Lent we have Jesus as the greatest model of this virtue through his life and death for the forgiveness of our sins. We encourage students to think of all the ways they can show is virtue in our thoughts, words and actions.

I hope your Easter will be a blessed one.

Best regards, Pershia Nelson Principal

PARISH CONNECTIONDear Parents

St John XXIII Parish has hired a part-time youth minister for our young people. Check it out below or online.

Happy Lent Fr Simon

Next EDGE Youth Ministry Night

Friday, March 11, 2016 from 7:00-9:00pm in the Parish hall. Next week we will continue our series on Creation and reflect on humankind made in the image

of God. We will consider how we are uniquely crated by God, with the ability to make moral

decisions, celebrate our different gifts and are called to grow in holiness. Please remember to

bring a picture of yourself; we will be creating “me” posters demonstrating how God has

uniquely created YOU!

Good Friday: Friday, March 25, 2016 at 6:00pm. SJ23 Youth Ministry will be leading Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. We have a sign up

sheet for readers and singers.

Please note Youth Ministry will not be running on April 1, 2016.

LIFE TEEN

Life Teen will begin our series on The Battle. We will study the fall of humanity as the root of

sin, the spiritual battles we face, who our enemy is and what our protection is, and the victory of

Christ over sin and death. The contrast between light and darkness will be a prominent theme in

this series as we study the blessings and consequence of the choices we make for where we to

choose to live our lives, whether in light or darkness.

Please remember to bring a friend to our youth ministry nights so we can pray, socialize and

learn together as a faithful community of young believers growing in our faith and relationship

with Jesus Christ.

Contact—Carla Marcoccia If you have any questions, ideas, prayer requests, or would like to get involved in Youth Min-

istry please don’t hesitate to contact me, [email protected], or come by the Youth

MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF PRAYER: During Lent we are encouraged to engage in almsgiving, fasting and prayer. Our focus this month is on prayer and it’s many benefits.

God is a source of comfort, strength and love for us. Through prayer we enter into a deeper relationship with God and gain a sense of attachment to Him. Many studies have shown that individuals who pray to a loving and pro-tective God with whom they have a meaningful relationship are less likely to experience anxiety and stress. Prayer offers emotional comfort and reduces stress by:

• Offering a sense of comfort and hope.• Creating a positive frame of mind.• Stress Relief.• Increases feelings of unity and trust.

Engaging in daily prayer with students gives them the opportunity to deepen their relationship with God and their community. It also offers a sense of emotional comfort that everyone can benefit from.

Prayer is joyPrayer is lovePrayer is peace. You cannot explain it you must experience it.It is not impossible.God gives it for the asking.“Ask and you shall receive.”The father knows what to give his children---how much more our heavenly father knows

Ms. Volcke’s Class Celebrates Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day ~ “You will never regret being kind.” On February 24, the students of St. John XXIII par-ticipated in Pink Shirt Day. The students were encouraged to wear a pink shirt or something pink. Pink Shirt Day started be-cause a teenage boy in Nova Sco-tia was being bul-lied because he wore a pink shirt to school. Two boys saw him be-ing bullied and they decided not to be bystanders. They decided to buy a bunch of pink shirts and give them out to every boy in their school. When the student that was being bullied came to school the next day he was surprised because all of the boys were wear-ing pink shirts. The bullying stopped and the boy felt supported and not alone. Participating in Pink Shirt Day means that you do not tolerate bullying. Everyone needs to take a stand against bullying and start being kind and accepting of everyone.

MS. BALDARI and MRS. HOFFNER'S CLASS: A FUN FILLED FEBRUARY

This month Ms. Baldari & Mrs. Hoffner's class has had a lot of fun!  We celebrated 100th day by wear-

ing our pyjamas and also bringing in 100 items.  For example, some of the items were bowtie pasta, pa-perclips, golden chocolate coins, varieties of candy, pompoms, origami stars and many other interesting things. We have been using them to count and do

subtraction and ad-dition using our 5 and 10 Frames.   This day was also our Valentine's cel-ebration. We danced, and prac-ticed our songs for the assembly on the 29th of February at 2:30. In addition, the children ex-changed TONS of cards, treats and candy and they also ate heart-shaped waffles with straw-berry jam.  Yum,

yum! Another fun activity has been Show and Tell.  The children have brought in many interesting toys in-cluding children favourites like Star Wars and Lego items, dolls, trains, hand made art work, stuffed ani-mals and we even had a floating dolphin.  We are working on our oral communication skills and how to ask questions using the W5H.   The students have been learning letter and sounds for Ll, Ff, and Bb, worked on high frequency words, word families  and the most AMAZING NEWS IS many that students in our class are already READING and starting to write short words and sentences.  WOW!     Fun + Learning = An Amazing Day in Kinder-garten!

100th Day of School By Ms. Leskowsky’s Class

On Tuesday, February 11, Grade 1 and 1/2 classes celebrated

100th Day of School. The students brought collections of 100

items. They practiced how to count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s up to

100 hundred. They visited other grade 1 classrooms and en-

joyed several activities, such as making hats, listening to math

stories, drawing number 100 in groups of tens, collecting 100

words, making presentations, and sharing what they know

about large numbers. The teachers, Mrs. Watson, Ms. Issy, and

Mrs. Leskowsky welcomed the students from other rooms, get-

ting to know them and enjoying their excitement for math.

Some activities lasted to the next day which made our 100th

Day of school one of our most enjoyable celebrations. The chil-

dren continue to count the days that they have spent at school

and learn large numbers through every day experiences.

Ms. Henry’s Language Group

During the month of February, Ms. Henry’s Language group has been

working on writing three different types of poems. Students wrote haiku about the seasons, shape poems about a variety of topics, and acrostic poems inspired by African Heritage month.

Here are just a few of the wonderful po-ems that were written.

Haiku:

From thrones high above, small wet crystals fall on headsbelow, singing pip, pop.

By Angelina F.

William Peyton Hubbard William was born 1842 month and date unknown.

In a cabin Hubbard was born.

Located now on Bloor Street and Bathurst Street.

Lived in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In summary, William was the first black visible minority to be elected to public office at any level of government in a Canadian city.

And died April 13, 1935 at the age of 93 in Toronto, On-tario, Canada.

My point is that he was the first black man to be elected for the public office.

Play Offers More Than Just Fun Are you and your students feeling the mid-winter blues? Perhaps it’s time to incorporate play into your daily routine. Play, or free time for older children and adolescents is considered essential for physical, social, cognitive and emotional well-being. Play has an essential role in a child or adolescent’s development. Play gives children the opportunity to solve problems, get along with peers, to take control, and to develop resiliency. “Play is considered so important to child development that it has been recognized by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child.”

• Play helps to reduce stress by releasing our body’s feel good chemicals called endorphins. This results in an overall feeling of well being.

• Play improves our cognitive abilities by utilizing the part of the brain that is responsible for planning and organi-zation, managing time, deciding what is and isn’t ap-propriate, decision making, and regulating emotions.

• Encouraging children to engage in pretend play stimu-lates their imagination and creativity. When children use their creativity it enables them to explore new ways of doing things. It also helps children learn important social skills by working with others and compromising.

• Play helps children to be able to see someone else’s perspective or “walk in another’s shoes”. When they engage in pretend play they have the opportunity to think about what others would do or say. This helps children become more tolerant and empathetic of oth-ers and increases their ability to work with others.

• Plays allows children to explore various emotions and feelings. When they engage in imaginary play they are able to express themselves in ways they may not ordi-narily be able to.

Allocate some time for children to have the opportunity to en-gage in some “playful” activities. You may leave some art sup-plies, puzzles, card and/or board games, dress up accessories or sports equipment in the classroom and allow them to be free to play.

Fostering The Family: The TCDSB Pastoral Plan 2015-18 “ Together With one Voice: Harmonizing Our Faith Through Family , Parish, and School” 2015 focuses on the FAMILY Play not only helps to develop cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills but also helps to strengthen family relationships. When you spend time playing together and having fun everyone in the family feels happy and positive about themselves and each other. Playing together as a family promotes cooperation and conversation as well as skills such as turn taking, following rules, problem solving, and being a good winner or loser. So turn off the computer screens, tablets or phones and engage in some “old fashioned” fun! Have a family game night. It’s important to make sure that the games are suitable for the youngest player. Listen to music, or make music together and sing along. Build a puzzle together Paint a picture Play outdoors
