From the Desk of the PastorDear Parishioners,

The time has come to say ‘thank you’ and ‘good-bye’ to Fr. Ken as he completes seven years of ministry here as the associate pastor. The school children had a wonderful send off for him as they sang some of the great songs from the shows that he directed for them. He has an uncanny ability to see potential in children and draw out of them a talent that not even the children themselves knew they had. Interspersed with the music were quotations from 14 year old Mattie Stepanek’s writings, quotations Fr. Ken frequently interspersed in his homilies following Mattie’s death in 2004, the year Fr. Ken came to the parish. (One of Mattie’s quotes is: Remember to play after every storm.) Several high school alumni arranged their schedules to come back and join the students in their tribute to Fr. Ken.

Another of Fr. Ken’s contributions to the fabric of life at SJC was his being one of the group that went to Holy Cross parish in Jinja, Uganda, Africa in 2006. (What a grace that Fr. Filbert will be able to go to Uganda while he is home in Tanzania this month. He will introduce himself to Fr. Serapio, Holy Cross’ pastor and to the community to help maintain that relationship during his years at SJC.) For the past three years Fr. Ken has also been responsible for leading the RCIA team that has welcomed and catechized adults wishing to become Catholic.

Fr. Ken also made very significant contributions by working with parishioners who took responsibility for the Art and Environment of the worship space. (Just look around you in church and you can see Fr. Ken’s influence.) He took great pride in making sure that all three of the Christmas Eve spaces were as prayerful as possible because of his sensitivity that the Mass in the gym or multi-purpose room would be the only Christmas Mass for the people who prayed there.

When a priest leaves a parish most of his ministry can’t be captured in the kind of stage review that the school did primarily because much of priestly ministry is often personal, even private. How could you summarize the confessions Fr. Ken heard, the anointings given in the Sacrament of the Sick (especially at RML Hospital every month), the baptisms performed, the countless hours he spent with families and couples planning a wedding or a funeral? Some of his greatest gifts have been his funeral homilies that he spent a lot of time preparing in order to help loved ones pray, quite often in tragic circumstances.

The school will also provide the Parish an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ and ‘good-bye’ to Mrs. Karen Rice as she retires. Mrs. Rice has taught at SJC for 39 years. A reception for her will be held this Tuesday evening, June 7th, in the Parish Center from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Please be sure to pass this information on to your adult children if they are alums of our school but don’t live in the area any more. She has truly touched and influenced many of her students’ lives over the years. Please take a moment to join us in thanking her for her many contributions.

To all the graduates from every level of education this year, our sincere congratulations and heartfelt wishes for leading fulfilled lives with the knowledge you have gained. May your faith be the greatest gift you share with others.

Peace, Fr. David

“Dear young people, let me now ask you a question. What will you leave to the next generation? Are you building your lives on firm foundations, building something that will endure? Are you living your lives in a way that opens up space for the Spirit in the midst of a world that wants to forget God, or even rejects him in the name of a falsely-conceived freedom? How are you using the gifts you have been given, the “power” which the Holy Spirit is even now prepared to release within you? What legacy will you leave to young people yet to come? What difference will you make?” -Pope Benedict XVI World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney

NEGOTIATING FOR THE SALARY YOU DESERVE

Interfaith Career Network invites you to join us on Thursday, June 16 at 7:00 p.m. for a wealth of information to help you negotiate the salary you deserve. Our speaker, Kevin Crews, will discuss the reasons why job seekers are reluctant to negotiate, especially in today’s economy. An innovative recruiter and highly successful career consultant, Kevin will offer advice on how to correctly ask for a fair total compensation package and talk about statements you can use to delay the conversation when asked about your salary requirements. Also, how to determine what you are actually worth in this market and what goes on behind the scenes with a recruiter, hiring manager and company. Plus, other things to negotiate for besides your base salary amount. This is a program you can’t afford to miss. We hope to see you at St. John of the Cross Parish Center, 5005 South Wolf Road in Western Springs. Bring a friend! This program is open to all and there is no charge to attend.

Interfaith Career Network (ICN) offers job support through various programs throughout the month. For further information, please visit our website at www.interfaithcareernetwork.org.

38TH ANNUAL SJC GARAGE SALE SATURDAY, JUNE 18TH - 9am to 2 p.m.

HALF PRICE/BAG SALE, MONDAY, JUNE 20 - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The SJC 38th Annual Garage Sale will soon be here. Our past successes have been be-cause of You! It is your generous donations of items, and your volunteer support with the sale, that keeps us going year after year. Give generously, give what you think others may want or need and please give items that are in usable condition. The “mission” of the Garage Sale means giving to those in need, it means respecting others less fortunate, it means bringing together volunteers in a “Christian” spirit, it means raising funds to support local charities within our community, it means supporting the parish as a whole, it means … making a difference in the lives of others!

Large Item Pick-ups will be made by “volunteer” crews. Volunteers/vehicles are needed. Call Connie Madden 708-246-4363 to offer your services.
