THE HERALD
St. John Lutheran Church
A Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
A Note From the Pastor
When I was a kid I remember singing a song that began with the words, “It only takes a spark, to get a fire burning”.
Here at St. John and around the world, Protestant congregations have just finished commemorating the 500th
anniversary of Martin Luther’s nailing of the 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg. The 95 Theses was a list of
95 statements or propositions for debate surrounding the use of indulgences (more specifically the sale of plenary
indulgences, which were official letters from the Church forgiving the amount of time you needed to spend in
purgatory atoning for sin not completely knocked out by God’s forgiveness).
It’s reasonable to believe that Martin Luther never imagined that the spark begun by the posting of those 95
statements would be the catalyst that would begin a reformation movement that still continues today. The posting of
those 95 statements that challenged the abusive use of indulgences was an action for Luther that was done out of
love for God and neighbor. It is out of that same sense of love that calls us forward in faith to act out of love for God
and neighbor, that our capital campaign launched this past spring with the calling for us to be a Community in Christ,
while being Christ in Community, “ACTIVE IN LOVE”.
As one of the initiatives of our most recent campaign and in the spirit of the reformation, we are excited to announce
the opportunity for each of you to engage in a volunteer opportunity here at St. John! We hope it will act as a spark to
invite you and others into a deeper and more meaningful experience of faith “active in love” here at St. John.
In the spirit of the Reformation, and as a way to facilitate inviting each of you to consider plugging into a ministry that matters, we have provided you with doors and post-it notes (with inkmarked nails). The doors and post-it notes are being used to provide you with a way to sign up to be a part of an existing ministry and some new ministries we are excited to begin. These two doors for service are located in the Narthex and in the front entry (you can’t miss them! They are the ones located in places doors should not be). These doors have sign-up sheets with ministry opportunities and descriptions of what’s involved in those volunteer ministries. We invite you to look over all of the ministry opportunities, and if you see one or two that resonate; please take a
sticky note off of the table next to the door, write your name and contact information on it, and place it on one of the
boxes on the sign-up sheet. We promise to invite you to share your gifts with this community over the next months.
There are a total of 95 spots that we ask you to help us fill! These ministry opportunities are for everyone, but
especially those who would like to be more involved in the ministries of this church. So if you have been looking for a
way to plug into some of the exciting ministries that take place here at St. John this is your opportunity!
We are very excited to see the doors fill with names of those who feel that God is calling them to share their faith
“active in love”. Who knows, perhaps this will be a spark that gets a fire going here at St. John!
In Christ,
Pastor Brian

Preschool News
Volunteer Appreciation
October weather was perfect for outdoor play. We are so thankful for Lois Nelson for maintaining and enhancing our outdoor playground. Lois built an outdoor sensory table, walking bridge, and ball drop, and she has done the landscaping. She has planted flowers and vegetables. She plays piano before our programs. Thank you, Lois, for your contributions that are too numerous to count!
Did you know preschool has a scholarship fund for families in need? Aaron and Holly Nissen generously donated to the St. John Foundation to start a preschool scholarship in 2013. The scholarship has provided for families during job loss and medical emergencies, and has reduced tuition for those who would have been unable to attend. Thank you, Aaron and Holly, for giving the gift of Christian preschool to these children.
Thank you to Char Grant for sewing germ stuffed animals, hats and mittens and any other project we ask of you. You are a shining example using your gifts to serve others.

CROSS+WALK Sunday School (Age 3-Grade 5)
In the month of October, we learned about gratitude with our
“Refocus” theme. We explored gratitude (and un-gratitude) in the
psalms, Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, and in a parable
that Jesus told. We can thank God for something every day!
Come experience our new theme in November and December,
“The Big Give,” as we think outside the box about generosity!
New to CROSS+WALK or just curious? Come join us! We meet
Sundays at 9:45am downstairs in the fellowship hall. Come at
9:30am for family fellowship time! Through large and small group
settings, we show everyone in the family how to live out their faith
every day—at home, at school, and in the community.
Questions? Call Erin Bjerke at the church office 701-232-8521 or
email [email protected].

milestone is for 4 and 5 year-olds who aren’t in
Kindergarten yet. Join us Sunday, November 5 during
CROSS+WALK (9:30am) for a “welcome to worship”
sanctuary tour. Bring your parents/guardians.
Grandparents and siblings are welcome, too! Meet in the

small group time. During worship on November 12, we’ll
have a special blessing and a gift for you. Hope to see
you there!

2-year-old Milestone:
Prayer Pillows Your St. John family would like to celebrate your
2-year-olds (and those who have turned 3 this school
year) with their very own Milestone! On November 12 at
9:45am, we will hold a learning session for the 2-year-olds
and their families to teach them about prayer and give
families tools to continue incorporating prayer into their
daily lives. On November 19, we will present them with
prayer pillows during worship.
Please contact Erin Bjerke ASAP if interested in
participating.

Year of the Volunteer
Freed from, freed for Doors
If you haven't noticed, there are a couple extra doors at St. John. These are there to help commemorate the Reformation, but also to help us live out the Year of the Volunteer, which is St. John's theme for this year. We're inviting everyone at St. John to consider volunteering, or volunteering in a new area. On these doors, you'll find various volunteer opportunities. Please check out these doors to see if there's something there that you want to get involved in! If you have an idea for something new for St. John, feel free to let us know and we'll work with you to get that ministry started.
St. John Thanksgiving Food Drive for the FM Food Pantry The FM Food Pantry is located at 1101 4
th Ave N in Fargo. The Pantry collects and distributes groceries and
goods directly to people who come to the Pantry site to make a request for food for their families and themselves. In 2016 the Pantry provided food to 17,885 individuals from 5,997 households – 44% of the individuals it serves are children under 18. The FM Food Pantry is heavily reliant on the work of volunteers. Last year in 2016, 1,906 individual volunteers provided 24,070 hours of work at the FM Food Pantry—this is equivalent to 11.5 full time employees. For one week each year we, at St. John, take a turn to recruit the volunteers who fill the many grocery requests that the Pantry receives every day. The FM Food Pantry is reliant on food that it receives from local food drives – like the one we’ve done annually at Thanksgiving at St. John. This Thanksgiving, our Social Concerns/Mission Committee is once again issuing a challenge to our congregation to collect one TON of grocery items to help keep the shelves of our F-M Food Pantry replenished! This year will mark our 22
nd annual food drive in connection with observance of Thanksgiving! The drive will
once again be held in conjunction with our Thanksgiving worship service that’s to be held at 7:00pm on November 21st. As in the past, those who participate in our food drive will be given a grocery bag during worship services with a list of food items needed by the Pantry stapled on the outside of the bag. More information about the food drive will be provided in the worship service announcements on Sunday mornings prior to Thanksgiving.

St. John 2018 Stewardship Drive
If you have already made a financial pledge toward next year’s operating budget, THANK YOU! The staff
and church council continue to find pledge responses to be a valuable tool in preparing the next year’s
budget. As of October 30, responses have been received from 58 of our 352 households.
If you have not yet done so, please prayerfully consider what your financial support to St. John’s 2018
ministries and programs will be, fill out your response form accordingly, and return it to the church by mail or
in the offering plate. Pledge forms are available in the church lobby at the Welcome Center or, if you’d like
to have one mailed or emailed to you, contact Jackie in the finance office at 701-232-8521 or
Simply Giving Program Participants: If you plan to continue to give electronically past December 31 of the
current year, it is helpful for the finance office to know your intention. Please either fill out a pledge form at
your convenience, checking the line to continue Simply Giving, and turn it in, or email the finance office,
