He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin,

we might live for righteousness.

Dear St. John Parishioners, Last weekend two of our second graders, Skarlit Evans-McSpadden and Madison Herrick received their First Holy Communion. Also this past Thursday two of our eighth graders, Michael Herrick and Emma Reardon received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Let’s con-tinue to keep them and their families in our prayers. This week we welcome Betsy Diaz-Kudra as our new parish secretary in addition to Karen and Eileen. Betsy will be able to fill in as needed, and she comes to us from St. Paul Parish in Chicago Heights. Betsy is the wife of Deacon Joseph and she works as a secretary at St

Paul as well. Please make sure you introduce yourself to her and welcome her to our community. I would like to thank you for your generous support of our parish for reaching our goal towards The Annual Catholic Appeal. I also commend you on your support of To Teach Who Christ is Campaign. $112,771.00 has been collected as of April 30th . If you are new to our parish and would like to contribute to this campaign please see the finance column in the bulletin for details. On May 15, all of our outside fixtures will be changed to energy efficient LED lights. We have received a grant of $8,605.00 from Northern Illinois Lit Signage Program to cover the cost of the fixtures. I am grateful to our parishioners Dave Reardon and Dave Galbreath for donating their time to install these fixtures. As you may know our sewers are in much need of repair. We were hoping to fix them after Easter but due to the weather conditions we were unable to have it done that week. The work will be done in June when Brook-wood School children are on summer vacation. As part of this work six sewers will be repaired as well as our retention pond. The total cost is $14,700.00. I am grateful to Fr. Ron who will say Masses in my absence. This Sunday I am leaving for Poland to be with my family and celebrate my father’s 80th Birthday on May 14th! I am scheduled to return May 19th. Unfortu-nately I will not be here for Mother’s Day weekend but I asked Fr. Ron to give all the mothers of our parish a hug and kiss for me! Fr. Karol

We welcome this weekend the representatives from our Chicago based Catholic Extension. We’ve been blessed to have an opportunity during last season of Lent to participate in the Cuban Project and to help with rebuilding the churches in Cuba through our monetary do-nations. We would like to thank all of you for your generous donations towards this initia-tive. We would also like to thank our Fellowship Committee for their help with the Cinco de Mayo celebration of which the proceeds will benefit the Cuban Project as well.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The fact that many monastic churches do not have a prominent tabernacle shapes the patterns of liturgical prayer. Monastic communities often protect the ancient value of “receiving from the same sacrifice,” meaning that the communicants are assured that what they eat and drink in the Holy Mysteries actually comes from the same celebration. It surprises many to learn that the Church does not foresee, nor does it provide for, Com-munion of the faithful from the reserved Sacrament. Liturgical laws have long defended your right to receive from the same sacrifice, the same Mass, that you attend. At one time, of course, the bread for the Eucharist was the ordinary bread of the day, except unleavened, probably prepared at home. It was broken and distributed to the faithful. Early on the loaf itself was referred to as the hostia in Latin, meaning the “sacrifice,” the same word for the sacrificial animal in Jewish worship, and for Jesus as the Lamb of God. By giving his life on the cross, Jesus became the hostia for us. To this day in the Greek Church, one of the tasks of the priest’s wife is to bake the bread for the Divine Liturgy, sometimes in a bakery oven dedicated to that purpose and called a “Bethlehem.” Today’s familiar individual hosts first appeared in the eleventh century at about the time when tabernacles were coming into use. The turn away from “bready” bread allowed the hosts to be reserved since they did not spoil like regular bread, and made the annual “Easter duty” counts easier. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
