| 32ND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME | NOVEMBER 6, 2016 2

STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY Anytime we decide when Stewardship Sunday will be, the readings of the day either go along with that or don't. But today as we present to you the theme of “Stewardship: a disciple’s way of life,” I think the readings are appropriate. The mother of seven sons in the first reading had such a sense of stewardship that if it was to be that her sons

would die rather than violate their Jewish dietary laws and customs, she was all for it. It’s horrible to watch your children die because of something you believe in. But that is a disciple’s way of life. And indeed that is stewardship at its

highest level, giving back to God with the confidence that everything we have is God’s anyway and that in eternity any true discipleship we express here will be rewarded. The gospel too reminds us of the fact that even marriage is not forever. The one that God has given us to love and raise a family with is only for a time. And again it is a disciple’s way of life to believe that and to live our lives with the one we love and those we love, always recognizing all of it as a gift, a gift that requires a response on our part, a response of love and generosity. One of my favorite stewardship ideas was placed in the brochure you got in the mail last week. It is entitled "The four P’s for Financial Generosity." It must be Planned, it must be a Priority, it must be a Percentage, and it must be Progressive. That's how we need to do it in life, and that's how we will become the best of stewards. I do want to apologize. The stewardship brochure, as beautiful as it is, had some printing problems for some of you and the inside was upside down and backwards no matter what you did to turn it around. Apparently it was only for a small batch of the brochures because many of us did not see this. But can I turn it into a symbol of a disciple’s way of life? Often times what we expect is not what we get. And that's part of stewardship as well. Everything may be going well in our lives, but then one day we turn the page of life and everything is upside down and backwards. That's when we really have to shore up and continue our response. And that's why having a good stewardship plan like the four “P’s” makes sense. So today you will hear stewardship homilies from Fr. Miniatt, Fr. Rebatzki, and me, and you will hear witness talks from brothers and sisters of yours in the parish. All of it will be geared around stewardship as a disciple's way of life. All of it will be a good reminder to you of the importance of this topic so that you can bring forward your pledge card for 2017 for both parish stewardship and capital appeal after the homily next weekend. But in the end what's important is what you do with all of these reminders in your own life. In the end what's important is how you respond to all the gifts that God has given you. Here at your parish we offer you so many opportunities to do that, but I also know there are so many of you who have many ways of doing that outside of parish life. And certainly in our day and time that's where we need to see stewardship as a disciple’s way of life even more so. So after prayer and consideration whatever you decide to do for the coming year for your parish and in other areas of your life, please be sensible and please be generous. BEGIN I know there's an article about the interfaith Thanksgiving prayer service in today's bulletin. But I just want to take note here as well. It has been years since we hosted that event here at our parish, and it would be wonderful to see our church half full with our own people to welcome our interfaith and ecumenical brothers and sisters and to pray together with them during this Thanksgiving season. Please take note, 7:30 PM Wednesday, November 16.

Blessings, Fr. Ken Knippel

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK NOVEMBER 6-12, 2016 During this week please pray for vocations, and pray about how God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the young people in your life—children, grandchildren, students, and friends to be open if God calls them to the priesthood or religious life. For more information about vocation events or discernment resources, visit thinkpriest.org, or contact the Vocation Office at [email protected].

CONGRATULATIONS MR. AARON LASKIEWICZ On Saturday, October 22, 2016, during a 10:30 AM Mass in Christ King Chapel at St. Francis Seminary, the Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki, Archbishop of Milwaukee, called seminarians Aaron Laskiewicz, Andrew Infanger, Will Arnold and Jose Lopez forward to Candidacy for Holy Orders. With continued formation, this will lead to Ordination to the Transitional Diaconate in 2017 and towards priesthood in 2018. Congratulations, Aaron.

PARISH SOCIAL AND VETERAN’S GATHERING Next Sunday, November 13, there will be a Parish Social in the Church Hall after the 9:00 and 11:00 AM Masses. Please plan to join with other parishioners in this celebration of community. And why not invite someone you see at Mass but don’t know? Or deliberately sit with someone sitting alone. This is a great opportunity to make new friends, and help create a spirit of warmth and welcome. Donuts, coffee, and juice are available (free will donations only.)

A special table is set aside after the 11:00 AM Mass for veterans and their families and friends, which is a great chance to meet other veterans in the parish and swap stories!

ANGEL TREE IS UNDERWAY & VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Every child has a story. For 2.7 million American children, that story is filled with the abandonment, loneliness, and shame that come from having a parent in prison. For many, it may also include following their parents down the same destructive road to incarceration. Angel Tree, a program of Prison Fellowship, reaches out to the children of inmates and their families with the love of Christ. When mom or dad is in prison, their children are often the silent sufferers. You can let them know they aren’t forgotten. You can give the child of a prisoner the joy of Christmas this year. We need volunteers to: Contact families for their children’s

gift wishes Help SJV parishioners sign out

Angels Deliver gifts to the children Contacting families for the children’s gift wishes is an essential and rewarding part of Angel Tree. Volunteers call approximately 12 families to confirm contact information and gift wishes. The time commitment for calling families is about 3 hours, when convenient for the caller. Calls can be made anytime between November 7-16. Also, we are in need of 6-7 volunteers per Mass to help sign out Angels on November 18/19. We ask that volunteers come 15 minutes before Mass and stay 20 minutes after Mass. If you are interested, please contact Michelle Paris at 262-385-6326 or at [email protected].

OUTREACH The following funds have been distributed: $1200 to Works of Mercy-Summer Camp. Held at the Cousins Center in Milwaukee, the 2 major goals of this camp are to provide persons with developmental disabilities a vacation in a controlled setting and to provide volunteers with an opportunity to learn about the needs of the persons with disabilities.

The eventual recipient of the shawl is prayed for prior to, during, and after the completion of the item as a show of love and support. This can be an enormous emotional boost for someone facing a challenge. This is a once a month commitment, and we especially need people at the Saturday 4:30 PM Mass. All materials and training are provided. For more information, please call Dawn Van Dorf at 796-3944, ext. 1117. Men and teens, please consider this wonderful ministry. We need your help!

ALL SAINTS THANKSGIVING All Saints Meal Program serves a large crowd for Thanksgiving Dinner every year. Once again they have requested help from us and from a few other parishes to make this possible. Monetary donations are greatly appreciated. Chuck and Debbie Potter will use their food-purchasing expertise and connections to make the best use of our donations. If you would be willing to help out, we would welcome checks made out to St. John Vianney Parish with a notation “For All Saints” on the memo line. They can be mailed to the attention of John B. Thompson, Human Concerns Director, at 1755 N. Calhoun Rd., Brookfield, WI 53005-5036 or dropped off at the parish. God bless you for your generosity, and may your Thanksgiving be truly blessed!
