Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League contest against our friends from Winsford United. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. This afternoon’s contest will be another big test of the squad as last season’s thirds placed team come calling to Edge Green Street. We have not had too good a home record against Winsford in the last few seasons and the boys will have to be on top of their game this afternoon to ensure we gain at least a share of the spoils today. We welcome back Winsford United with former Town player and assistant manager Ian Street in charge. Streety took over at Winsford last term after the exit of Chris Wilcox to Woodley Sports and he steered them to their highest league finish since returning back to the NWCL and also a Challenge Cup Final success over Champions New Mills. We played our final match of August on Tuesday here at Edge Green Street against Bootle (with the result being unknown as I write this article) so it is probably time to assess the first proper month of Jimmy McBride’s second period in charge here at Town. We started off well with what I would suggest was the most unexpected result of the opening day of the season as we defeat the previous terms Runners Up here at Edge Green Street 3-2. This was followed by a 0-0 draw at Atherton LR in a game we really should of won. The good start continued as we netted a late winner at Colne to secure a 2-1 victory and followed that up with a 3-1 home victory over AFC Liverpool that saw us make it to the summit of the North West Counties League, Premier Division. Unfortunately the wheels have come off somewhat since this achievement as we then exited the FA Cup at the hands of Atherton LR before suffering our first two league defeats of the season at Stone Dominoes and here against Flixton last Saturday. Regardless of the recent downturn in fortunes it has been a start few of us would have expected and here’s hoping that the boys can get back to performing like we did at the start of the month. Let get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them into the next round. Enjoy the Game. . .

In Town Today . . . Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers and competed in the Welsh Combination Football League. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and its present ground - Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913, thanks in the main to the then secretary, Mr W H Burning, but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities, United regrouped with a new committee headed by Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member

of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. That was to be one of the few successes as the Blues struggled to survive both on and off the field. During the War, Barton Stadium was almost stripped bare to aid the war effort. After the war, United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the Blues win the Cheshire League Cup three times and a Cheshire Senior Cup victory. In the 60’s and early 70’s the Blues returned to struggling ways with only a rare FA Cup First Round appearance at Peterborough to shout about. United lost the game 4-1. That match acted as a springboard and, under John Williams, Winsford United hit the glory trail. Between 1976 and 1980, the Blues won the Cheshire League title in 1976/77, were runners-up in 1979/80 and set a new record by winning the League Cup four seasons out of five, including a hat-trick of wins (1979 & 80 & 81). They won the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1980 and made an appearance in the quarterfinals of the FA Trophy in 1978. It was in John Williams’ final season that the former Everton and Welsh International goalkeeper, Neville Southall, was sold to Bury for £6,000. A sell on clause later netted United a club record figure of around £30,000 when he moved to Goodison Park. After that halcyon period, United’s fortunes again nose-dived. The Cheshire League merged with The Lancashire League to become The North West Counties League and the Northern Premier League formed a first division in 1987/8. The Blues were invited to join but they never really set the place on fire, seventh place being the best achieved. In January 1991, Winsford were bottom of the NPL First Division and facing a drop back down to the NWCFL. The club then pulled a masterstroke by appointing Mike McKenzie as team manager. They lost only four more games and avoided the drop. A piece of silverware was added when they beat Northwich Vics in the local cup final. In 1991/92 they gained promotion to the Premier Division, finishing as runners up and reaching the First Round of the FA Cup for only the third time in the club’s history. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as ‘Macca’s’ men won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title. Sadly the team then broke up in the summer of 1993 when Mike McKenzie was lured into Conference football. Under the management of Dalton Steele, United finished seventh in the league and lifted the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. Season 1998 saw Steele leave for Chorley, taking nearly all the team with him; Mark Came took over and finished the season off with a makeshift side. The club received another tremendous

. . . Winsford United Football Club boost early in 1999 when goalkeeper Andy Oakes who had signed for Hull City for a modest fee but with a 25% sell-on clause was signed by Derby County for £480,000 giving Winsford a record amount for a Non-League sell-on clause. Came took the regins for the 1999/2000 campaign but a run of poor results saw Kevin Tully put in the hot seat. What followed was the worst run of results in the club’s history and relegation for the first time. At the start of the 2000/2001 season in Unibond Division One Tully left, and Steve Shaughnessy was appointed Player/Manager. The team performed well throughout the season but administrative errors resulted in 6 points being deducted and instead of finishing in a mid-table spot they were relegated to The First Division of the North West Counties League. It took another 5 seasons before Winsford were able to start the long climb back. Unfortunately during that time they fell another step into NWCFL Division Two. The appointment of Dave Twite and a lot of hard work by the board saw a steady improvement in the fortunes of the club. When Dave left the club, Chris Wilcok replaced him. The 2005/06 season saw Chris and assistant manager John Flanagan led the team to the Division two title. However both Chris and John left the club during the close season to take over at Woodley Sports. Former Town manager Joe Gibiliru took over for the 2007/8 season and Winsford spent the majority of that term in the top half of the table before finishing in 10th position. They club secured some silverware when they won the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup defeating fellow Vodkat League, Division One outfit Congleton Town in the final, running out 2-1 winners with a late goal. 2008-09 saw the Barton Stadium outfit struggle at the wrong end of the table and after survival was secured with a 20th position finish it was decided that the club would part company with manager Gibiliru, the club appointed Tony Ledwards as his successor for the 2009/10. With the club again struggling Ledwards left by mutual consent in March with a team of Mike Allcock and Dave Twite taking up the reigns. They steadied the ship as the club secured some excellent results to secure Premier Division football for Winsford United this term. They also steered the club to the League Challenge Cup Final including ending Town’s chances of silverware with a 1-0 victory at the Semi Final stage. They however turned in a disappointing performance when it mattered and fell to defeat at the hands of relegated Abbey Hey in the final. Former manager Chris Willcock took over at the start of last season with Ian Street as his Assistant. Once again there was an air of optimism which was justified as the club spent most of the early part of the season at the top of the table. There was a shock at the beginning of February however and more than a little touch of déjà vu when Willcock announced he was once again leaving to take charge at Woodley Sports, leaving Ian Street in charge. The club finished the season in a creditable third place and were victorious in the Challenge Cup Final.

Match Report v Bootle . . . Tuesday 30th August 2011: North West Counties League, Premier Division St Helens Town 1-2 Bootle The month of August ended on a bad note for St Helens Town as they fell to their third consecutive league defeat at Edge Green Street this evening. There was an early sign of things to come as Bootle created an opening with less than 60 seconds on the clock. Kevin Black got down the right wing and sent a dangerous ball into the box which found it’s way to Michael Young on the far post and he screwed his shot wide of the target when it seemed easier to score. Town responded with a chance of their own when Ian Frazer sent a free kick towards Michael Burns on the far post the ball broke to Carl Addison on the edge of the box but he could not keep his effort down and it sailed over the bar. Leon Williams was the next man to spurn a chance as he reacted quickly to a defensive error just inside the Bootle area his first time shot was blocked at close range by David Moran in the visitor’s goal, who reacted quickly to the danger. Another set piece into the Bootle area caused problems as a right wing corner was delivered to the far post with Peter Birch winning an initial header which broke off a defender and the loose ball was hacked clear. After a quarter of an hour the injured Carl Dale was replaced by Daniel O’Connor and his was to be short cameo appearance as some 50 seconds later he was sent from the field for a stamp on a prostrate Town man he had just scythed down. With half an hour on the clock Iain Dyson collected a through ball and advanced goal wards he got to the by-line where his attempted effort was held by the visiting stopper. Somewhat against the run of play the 10 men took the lead on 33 minutes when James O’Brien found the top right hand corner of the net with a well placed free kick from the right hand edge of the penalty area. The lead was to be short lived as Williams collected a through ball on the edge of the box and won a tussle with his defender before lobbing an effort over the advancing goalkeeper and into the net. The final action of the half cam deep in stoppage time when O’Brien was again the taker of a free kick from the right, this time on the by-line, his effort was on target by Dale Newbrook did well to tip the effort over the bar. The visitors took the lead shortly after the restart when Young was allowed far too much time and space 25 yards from goal and arrowed an effort into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Bootle belied their numerical inferiority and dominated the contest for large periods, Newbrook was again called into action when Liam Rushton went on a mazy run which culminated in the Town stopper turning his effort wide of the right hand upright. At the other end Town had a good chance when Williams got into the box but Moran again closed him down quickly and got a stroke of fortune as the strikers effort ricocheted off the stopper and back into him going behind for a goal kick. Bootle were unlucky not to have extended their advantage on 70 minutes when Kevin Black did well down the right wing before cutting inside and unleashing an effort that cannoned back off the right hand post and away from danger. Moments later substitute Thomas Foley got in on the act as he tried his luck from the right of the Town area but Newbrook was equal to it as he turned the effort around the post. Town pressed on in the closing stages in an effort to secure an equaliser. Dyson was released by a through ball and shot just wide of the right hand upright under pressure before he linked with Williams in another move with the latter unable to get hold of his shot properly and it went harmlessly wide. The final throws of the contest saw Williams link with Robert Smith on the right with Smith sending a searching ball into the area which Dyson met on the far post but his effort found the side netting. Foley almost secured the victory for Bootle in added on time when he found himself one on one with Newbrook but again the stopper was able to spare Town’s blushes with another good save this time at the strikers feet. Bootle had however done enough to secure the victory and Town will need to improve for the visit of Winsford United on Saturday. NWCF League News . . . FA Cup at Ramsbottom United The FA Cup made an unprecedented visit to a tiny East Lancashire mill town after two seven year olds persuaded their parents to invite the prestigious trophy to a local football match. The children, whose dads are heavily involved with non-league Ramsbottom United Football Club heard discussions about “the FA Cup coming to town” after the club beat local rivals in the extra preliminary round of the competition, leaving them still a staggering thirteen rounds away from the

Wembley final. “When we tried explaining that the real FA Cup wasn’t coming to Rammy, “ said father and joint-manager Anthony Johnson, “the lads were really disappointed. It’s pretty difficult being surrounded by United, City and Liverpool supporters when your dad plays for a team in the Northwest Counties League, and they’d been telling friends all about the how we were planning on bringing the trophy home from work with us.” It was then that Anthony got talking to supporters club chairman, and the two of them got the idea of getting in touch with the F.A. “Anthony persuaded me to just give it a try, and see if they would be willing to loan us the cup for a day, “ explained the chairman. “After a lot of deliberation on their part I was told by a representative that it’s not something they would normally consider, but on this occasion they’d be more than happy to oblige. I couldn’t believe it, and Anthony was over the moon when I told him that we’d have our hands on the real cup this weekend. The kids were in hysterics! It reminded me of Jim'll Fix It when I was little.” “We were told we can display the trophy through to kickoff, “ said club Chairman Harry Williams, “and we’re hoping it’ll inspire the team to put together a great cup run. Most people don’t even know the FA Cup has started yet, but it’s the biggest and oldest club competition in the world. Our giant-killing campaign starts on Friday against Salford City, a team from the league above ours; if we win, we’re just twelve more games away from Wembley!”

BAe Systems come to the aid of The Bullets Alsager Town are being helped to rise from the ashes of the July fire at their ground thanks to the town’s largest employer, BAe Systems. The global company, along with a number of their contractors, have agreed to come to the aid of the Bullets following the dreadful fire at Woodland Court back in July. BAe have enlisted several of their contractors who are willing to help out with materials and manpower in order to get things up and running again. John Shenton, Alsager Town Press Officer said: “All the work at the ground is to be completed with the goodwill of the companies

concerned. This has undoubtedly saved Alsager Town F.C. from possible extinction. “Work actually commenced towards the end of last week when the erection of security fencing began. Some building work is planned to start in the next week or so. It has been decided that Portakabins will form the new changing rooms, and these buildings will be delivered in the not too distant future. Once sited, the interiors will be refurbished to provide changing and showering facilities for both home and away teams and the match officials. A further Portakabin will be refurbished for use as Ladies and Gents toilets. The club are over the moon following this revelation, and simply can’t offer enough thanks to Mr Charlie Blakemore, BAE’s Managing Director of Land Systems (Armaments), the Management at BAe’s Radway Green Armaments factory, and of course BAE’s Contractors for all their help. It is expected that the club will be able to open their home fixtures on the 4th October but until then it is hoped that fixtures will be reversed where possible.”

Glyn Jones’ Programme Review II . . . Blast from the past ST. HELENS TOWN v CLITHEROE – Saturday, 24th December 1983 Town’s programmes in the period from 1979 to 1984 had pre-printed covers with either one or two duplicated sheets inside, to make an 8 or 12-page programme, priced at 10p. The format remained the same from its reintroduction in 1979, although I have yet to see any issues for the 1981/82 or 1982/83 seasons. The issue against Clitheroe featured a reused cover – evidence of an early commitment to recycling. A slip of paper with the match details typed on has been pasted over those for an earlier game against Rossendale from a game three years earlier. The match itself was a Third Round Replay in the NWCL Cup competition and took place on Christmas Eve. Dixon’s Travel and Burtonwood Big Taste Beers had full page

advertisements and there were smaller inserts for R. Lunt jewellers, Joe Pickavance and Albert Anslow. There was a full page devoted to forthcoming attractions in the social club over the festive period, including Mal Darwin on Christmas Eve, “Snaps” on Christmas Day, “Breakaway Duo” on New Year’s Eve and Ivan Dupree and Paula Jay on New Year’s Day. The football fixture list looked forward to the Boxing Day clash with Darwen at Hoghton Road, followed by a trip to Caernarfon Town on 2nd January. Town’s team that day featured Paladino in goal and the late Tommy O’Neil as captain.

On a level playing field AFC LIVERPOOL v ALSAGER TOWN – Sunday, 7th August 2011 The unfortunate fire at Alsager necessitated a venue change and as Prescot Cables were at home on the Saturday, AFC Liverpool’s game was played on the Sunday, attracting a crowd of 185 to Valerie Park. The programme, priced at £2, was edited by Steven Horton, with cover design by Chris Purcell and photography by Dave Williams. Running to 52 pages, it is a commendable effort with many pages in colour, albeit most of which are adverts, and there are a large number of photographs, but many of these were a little distorted. It is a good read and packed with information. Adopting a similar theme to Runcorn Linnets – “by the fans, for the fans” – it was nevertheless surreal to witness the teams take the pitch to the strains of “You’ll never walk alone.” You have to ask whether it’s truly an alternative club or just a supporters’ team – perhaps old habits die hard – or maybe I’m just showing my true colours. Speaking of which…

They’re in a different league EVERTON v SHEFFIELD UNITED – Carling Cup 2nd Rd – Wednesday, 24th August 2011 Everton produced an 84-page full colour programme for the visit of League One Sheffield United, priced at £3. Lavishly illustrated throughout with a whole range of interesting articles, the Toffees’ programme has been among the leaders in its field for over 40 years, setting the high standard that the majority of clubs can only dream of. The programme is produced by a team of dedicated staff, including editor Darren Griffiths, graphic designer James Ginieres and seven different contributors including Gavin Buckland. No doubt it’s a good read and probably value for money but, if there is to be criticism, then at a time when there’s so much information

across the media generally, including the club’s own website and monthly Evertonian magazine, it might be seen as information overkill. Sales are still only averaging one in three spectators at any given match and programmes are not as collectable these days, with high prices and storage difficulties. Some clubs, notably Carlisle United and a number in Scotland are producing much smaller, leaner programmes of 8-20 pages, much like they were in the 1950s and 1960s, priced at £1 and sales have actually increased. Already this season, I have seen Leeds United’s perfect bound programme has increased in price to £4 and the days of the £5 programme won’t be far away at the higher levels of the game.

St Helens Town stalwart Iain Dyson made his 250th appearance for the club in last Saturday’s home fixture against Flixton. ‘Dyce’ made his debut at the club’s former Hoghton Road home back on the 14th August 1999 when Town ran out 3-1 winners over Ramsbottom United and went on to hit his first goal at Mossley in a 1-1 draw on 11th September 1999 before eventually going on to play for fellow NWCFL clubs Ramsbottom United and Congleton Town. Iain returned to the club in 2005 and has been virtually ever present since including stints as club captain, acting manager and manager. He’s now looking to hit the 100-goal mark, requiring just twelve more for the century. Prior to kick off on Saturday the club presented Iain with a replica shirt embroidered with the details of his achievement and the club’s main sponsor Johnsons Toyota Liverpool also commemorated the event by presenting Iain with the choice of a brand new top of the range Toyota car for a week and a voucher for a hotel stay. Iain is pictured with Town boss Jim McBride and Johnsons Toyota Liverpool General Manager Gareth Shone. The club are also delighted to announce that Iain is to be inducted into the St Helens Town Football Club ‘Hall of Fame’ as their player of the 2000’s following in the footsteps of legends Bert Trautmann (1940s), John Connelly (1950s), Bill Foulkes (1960s), Alan Wellens (1970s) and Tommy O’Neil (1980s) and Steve Pennington (1990s). Town Chairman John McKiernan said, “We are delighted to be able to acknowledge Iain’s considerable contribution to the club. In a decade of significant upheaval for Town and a real change in non-league football he has been a model of consistency and a real ‘club man’. He added, “Iain is extremely well respected in North West non-league football circles and that is testament to his approach both on and off the field; long may his tenure at Town continue.”

250 Up for Iain Dyson . . .
