Talk of the Town . . . Good evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Barnoldswick Town. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. All good things must come to an end as they say and unfortunately we fell to our first defeat in nine on Saturday against Alsager Town in the North West Counties League, Challenge Cup 2nd Round our first loss since 12th September at high flying AFC Liverpool. It was a disappointing performance as manager Ian Granite used the encounter to give a run out for some of the players who had not been getting much game time of late and we turned in a below par display measured against the recent ones we have been used to over the last month or so. We did create chances but similar to the league game against the same opposition at the end of August we failed to make our domination pay and were punished. We had opened the scoring as early as the 6th minute when Neil Weaver got down the right and centred towards Stephen Milne, the keeper looked to be favourite but spilt the cross and Milne had the simple task of turning the loose ball into the unguarded net. The visitors

levelled soon afterwards when Chris Lunn produced a “Worldie” finding the net from all of 30 yards out and after the hosts could not convert their possession into another goal they were caught by the visitors after a harshly awarded free kick saw a goalmouth melee and Tom Parkes poked the ball home as we continued our poor record in knock out football this season as we have yet to win a game in Cup Competitions. Our focus now moves back to League action as we welcome our visitors Barnoldswick Town, much was expected of Barlick after their performances since their elevation

to the Premier Division but they have been in patchy form so far this season and they sit in a mid table position. The visitors will be looking to avenge the 2-1 defeat that we sent them to in the reverse fixture in August. It is important that we quickly bounce back from Saturday’s disappointment and quickly get back on track with a positive result this evening, we have been spoilt of late with excellent results and performances and hopefully we can back to that level of performances starting this evening. Finally we have agreed a date with Cammell Lairds for the Liverpool Senior Cup First Round Tie which is now scheduled to take place here at Brocstedes Park on Tuesday 26th November with a 7,45pm kick off replacing the previously scheduled League contest against Bootle. Let’s get behind Town this evening and hopefully cheer them onto victory. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Historically there are been teams representing the Town of Barnoldswick in County competition since the early 1900’s with teams such as Barnoldswick, Barnoldswick United & Barnoldswick Town playing in the Lancashire Combination in the early part of the 20th Century. Indeed St Helens Town & Barnoldswick crossed swords during the latter’s 8 season stint in the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination League between 1947/8 & 1954/55 seasons. The clubs best league finish

was achieved in the 1952/3 season when they finished in 6th position above Town who ironically beat them twice 5-3 at home and 6-0 away. The origins of the current club date back to 1972 when a new club was formed and named Barnoldswick United (1972), - so called due to being canny yorkshiremen – being as their was a previous club named Barnoldswick United and they had outstanding debts the new club would not now be liable for them. The current ground started out as a grazing meadow for cattle, after a lot of hard work, it is now the pitch we play on. The club had 2 teams playing in the Craven & District Football League in the early 1990's and joined the East Lancashire Football League again with 2 teams. The 2003/2004 season brought the amalgamation of Barnoldswick United(1972), Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors and the club changed its name to Barnoldswick Town Football Club. From that point the club ran 3 senior teams. In the late 1990's the 1st and 2nd teams joined The West Lancashire Football League, with the 3rds staying in The East Lancashire Football League. It had always been in the club's constitution to get the ground up to the minimum standards of The North West Counties Football League and the 2009/2010 season saw the club accepted into The North West Counties Football League, with the 1st team playing in Division One, and the 2nd team in the reserve division. The clubs 3rd team remained in The East Lancashire Football League. The club also entered an under 18's team in The LFA midweek floodlight league for the 2009/2010 season, and also had 7 junior teams playing in the North Valley League for the 2009/2010 season. The club can call upon the 2 pitches on the site, one being floodlit plus a floodlit training pitch. Our club house can hold up to 120 people and is hired out for functions. The club’s main sponsor is Silentnight Beds Ltd and the ground is named The Silentnight Beds Stadium. Ambitions for last season started low. The club have got three managers and they took a lot of stick especially from Radio Lancashire, stating that 3 managers cannot possibly run a successful football team. Well Messer's Ball, Richardson & Airdrie proved them all wrong with Barnoldswick Town finishing runners up in the Vodkat League, Division One and finalists in the prestigious West Riding County Cup beating Guiseley who won promotion to the Conference North along the way.

. . . Barnoldswick Town It was an interesting season as the club only expected to hold our own and try to make sure they avoided the battle at the bottom of the league. Following on from their successes in the 2009/10 season the club went from just looking to avoid relegation in the Premier Division 2010/11 to astounding themselves by finishing a creditable 7th in the league, only suspensions and injuries we feel robbed us of a top three spot. Initially the clubs main aim the next season was not to get relegated, somewhat low the previous terms performances but again Barlick were to perform well at the summit of the table and have made a commitment to get their ground up to standard as they intend to apply for promotion in the 2012/3 season. The club improved on their previous season and finished in 4th position. Last season saw Barnoldswick touted as genuine title contenders but despite a decent start to the season they fell off and finished in their worst position of 9th since their elevation to the Premier Division of the North West Counties Football League.

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park, for this NWCFL Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Barnoldswick Town. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters along with our

own followers are treated to an entertaining game. Saturday’s home game against visitors Alsager Town proved to be a frustrating afternoon which eventually saw the lads go down 1-2 and exit another cup competition at the first hurdle. It wasn’t for the lack of chances on Saturday, in reality we had enough to have won a couple of games and on another day we could have progressed with some ease. Credit to Alsager who took their goals when the opportunity arose. There were a number of changes to our regular line-up with Michael Sykes-Wright, Connor Sanderson and Adam Storey missing while Lee Crompton, Neil Weaver, Sam Pullinger, Ste Milne and Dan Wright all made starts having been on the bench recently. Paul Cooke-Hannah also returned to the side after injury has kept him out for five games. New signing Ed Richardson also had an impressive debut at left back. The defeat brought to an end our unbeaten run of nine games. Our best wishes go to Cole Ashton who moved to Runcorn Linnets last week. His debut, against our visitors tonight, had mixed fortunes for him - scoring the game’s only goal to see his side through in the League Cup but later in the game he suffered a broken ankle and will

be in a cast for six weeks. We met Barlick earlier in the season and Town recorded a battling 1-2 win. Goals from Shaun Judge and Paul Cooke-Hannah secured Town’s first win at the Silentnight Beds Stadium. Many thanks to all those who supported last Saturday’s Race Night which raised over £400 for club funds. Our next event is a Comedy and Curry Night at Windleshaw on Saturday 7th December - three great comedians plus superb food just £15 per ticket which are available from Darryl Picton. Please give this event you full support. We have a break from the norm on Saturday with a planned away trip to Bacup and Rossendale Borough before returning for a series of four home games starting with AFC Blackpool next Tuesday evening. Enjoy the game. John McKiernan Chairman St Helens Town AFC

Town v Alsager Town . . . Alsager halt Town’s unbeaten run St Helens Town 1-2 Alsager Town St. Helens Town went out of the NW Counties League Cup to Alsager Town at Brocstedes Park on Saturday, a defeat which brought an end to a nine-game unbeaten run and, in reality, they had only themselves to blame. They had many chances to wrap up the game before the visitors struck

with six minutes remaining and, for the third time this season, St. Helens went out of a cup competition at the first attempt. Defeat seemed out of the question when, after only 6 minutes, Town went ahead. A cross from the right wing appeared to be covered by Stuart Plant in the visitors’ goal, but the ball spun out of his control, leaving Ste Milne free to tap the ball into the empty net. St. Helens looked to be cruising to victory, but only three minutes later, Chris Lunn let fly from 40 yards out and Ciaran Gibson in the Town goal was caught by surprise as the ball bounced past him to level the scores at 1-1. Debutant Edward Richardson had an impressive game at left back and he went close from distance after 20 minutes, then shortly afterwards, Shaun Judge was only just wide with a good shot. The next chance fell to Nathan Parish, but the ball flew off his shoulder rather than his head and the chance crept wide of the post. The same player then found Milne in a good position, Plant blocked the shot, then gathered the ball again at the second attempt. Half-time came with the scores still level, but it seemed only a matter of time before Town took control. The second-half began in much the same way and, seven minutes in, Andy Gillespie went close with a headed chance. The best opportunity presented itself on the hour mark as Milne steered a powerful shot towards goal. The chance looked to have the beating of keeper Plant, but then Gillespie intercepted the ball and the resulting shot was deflected by a defender and went agonisingly wide. As the game drew to its conclusion, extra time looked to be a distinct possibility. Yet again, another Town chance fell to Gillespie, but his opportunity was wasted, Alsager rode their luck and, with less than six minutes remaining, a rare break saw a hopeful shot blocked by Gibson, only for Tom Parkes to poke home the rebound, to send Alsager through to face Runcorn Linnets in the next round. This was a good opportunity missed for St, Helens Town and their defeat could be laid more at the door of their own wastefulness, rather than a good performance from the visitors, who were recording their second away win over St. Helens this season, following their 3-0 win in the league game in August. That said, Town will not be shedding too many tears, providing they can pick up again in the forthcoming league matches against Barnoldswick (at home on Tuesday) and – weather permitting – away to Bacup and Rossendale Borough on Saturday. Town have been drawn at home to Cammell Laird in the Liverpool Senior Cup, a game which has been arranged for Tuesday, 26th November. Should they beat the Birkenhead side, they have the chance to face big boys Everton, Liverpool or Southport in the Semi-Finals later in the season.

A Brief History . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last

season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final,

despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which

. . . of St Helens Town AFC

he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goal scorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and in 2010/11 next to bottom, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up who battled well to avoid relegation. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and having spent over two seasons sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street a new ground share agreement has been brokered with fellow Premier Division side Ashton Athletic to cover their immediate future as plans for a return to St Helens continue.

Hearts and Goals . . . St Helens Town has a new high-profile national charity partner for the 2013/14 season after joining up with Hearts & Goals, a lifesaving campaign for which Fabrice Muamba is ambassador. The club has forged a new partnership with Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind Hearts & Goals,a national campaign to tackle the UK’s biggest killer sudden cardiac arrest, by helping communities place lifesaving public-access

AEDs (automated external defibrillators). The campaign’s ambassador, former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the football pitch in March 2012 and went on to make a remarkable recovery thanks to prompt treatment with CPR and an AED. Everyone at the club was so moved by his experiences and the work he and the charity has done through Hearts & Goals, Town want to raise as much money as possible for the campaign by holding a series of fundraising events throughout the season and beyond, as well as dedicating a percentage of all incoming sponsorship deals to the charity. Sudden cardiac arrest claims 100,000 lives in the UK every year and AEDs, like the one used on Fabrice on the pitch at White Hart Lane, increase a person’s chance of surviving from just 5% to 50% if they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. The devices do not require training and can be used by anyone to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm in the event of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Arrhythmia Alliance has already helped communities up and down the UK place public-access AEDs as part of Hearts & Goals. The devices are placed in secure cabinets which are logged with local ambulance services and available to anyone in the community 24/7. In the event of an emergency anyone who phones 999 is then given immediate access to the lifesaving defibrillator. St Helens Town Commercial Manager, Darryl Picton, said: “The idea to forge this partnership came from Fabrice’s story. “Never before have I witnessed such an event that has brought football fans, clubs and

. . . Our Charity Partner players together in support of one man as what happened on that horrific day at White Hart Lane. The story touched the hearts of everyone and transcended sport. Those events really hit home to everyone at St Helens Town how quickly and unexpectedly tragedy can strike in a community and having access to this essential equipment will save hundreds of lives. “We are proud to be associated with Hearts and Goals and with Fabrice, and we will work tirelessly throughout the year to raise every penny possible for the campaign.”

Trudie Lobban MBE, Founder and CEO of Arrhythmia Alliance, said: “We are absolutely delighted St Helens Town AFC have chosen our Hearts & Goals campaign as their official

charity campaign. “Hearts & Goals focuses on tackling the UK’s biggest killer, sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 100,000 people in the UK every year. We have already been able to help communities up and down the country place lifesaving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and with partners like St Helens we can continue this work. “It is clear all involved at the club are very passionate about the campaign and we are delighted to welcome them on board.” A host of fundraising events are already planned throughout the year, including a a Race Night on Saturday 26th October and Comedy & Curry Night on Saturday 7th December. For full details of events or to make a donation to the campaign contact Darryl Picton on 07908 833 554 or by email at [email protected] Visit www.heartsandgoals.org for more information.

St Helens Town AFC . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall

(pictured below) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough

having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued

throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a difficult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - present Ian Granite (pictured left) became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division.

Many thanks to Jim Barrett and Eric Bond for their input in compiling the information.

NWCFL News . . . Alsager Town - manager Andy Turner has appointed Mick Hathaway as his new assistant. Andy said: “I have known Mick for a while, having crossed paths a lot during our days in the Evo-Stik League. He arrives from Stafford Rangers where he was first team coach, and comes with a lot of knowledge and experience. He has already made a good impression and I’m sure he will add value to the club going forward”. Runcorn Linnets - the club will be hosting a charity match on 3rd November, in aid of the Astro Brain Tumour Fund. An ex-Runcorn XI will play an Ex-Pro XI, with special guests including comedian John Bishop and champion boxer Derry Matthews. Gates open at 12.30 pm for a 1.30 pm kick off, and admission for adults is £4 and concessions £2. Widnes Vikings - the club now has a fully branded Online Merchandise Shop, with an ever expanding selection of merchandise, including hats, t-shirts, hoodies and much more. St Helens Town - Town's game against Cammell Laird in the Liverpool Senior Cup 1st Round has been scheduled for Tuesday 26th November 2013 with a 7.45pm kick off, replacing the scheduled Premier Division game against Bootle. This is subject to the Evo-Stik League not scheduling a league game for Cammell Laird, as the Liverpool Senior Cup is not their parent County FA competition. This week’s NWCFL Landmarks Chris Wademan's 36th minute equaliser for Silsden in their 1-1 draw at Stockport Sports was the Cobbydalers' 600th League goal. Atherton LR reached 1200 league points courtesy of their 6-2 win at Leek CSOB. Atherton Collieries v Bacup & Rossendale Borough Abandoned Game League Secretary John Deal has issued the following statement concerning the League Challenge Cup tie between Atherton Collieries and Bacup & Rossendale Borough. "Following the abandonment of this Saturday's game between Atherton Collieries and Bacup & Rossendale Borough, the League Management Committee will in due course be made aware of the contents of the referee's report regarding the circumstances that led to the game being abandoned. As the abandonment of the game may be subject to FA Disciplinary Charges, no comment can be made on behalf of the League Management Committee at this stage".

Back to Business . . . Its been another interesting week at Town which saw our unbeaten run come to a disappointing end in the League Cup. Coming off the back of a great point last Tuesday evening against Congleton, manager Ian Granite took the opportunity to change things up a little for the Cup clash, and a number of fringe players got an opportunity to get some first team, the most notable of these being full back Ed Richardson who had an excellent debut for the club. In a competitive game, Town missed a number of chances to seal a comfortable victory and were mugged late with a goal which game from a dubious free kick. Away from the pitch, Saturday evening saw the latest of our club fundraisers, our annual race night which raised some much needed funds for the club, and despite a mediocre turnout, it was an enjoyable night and we may look at a second one in the new year. Next up in terms of events for the club is the Bert Trautmann Memorial Game against a Manchester City Former Players XI. Being without our own home ground at the moment, we have opted to host this fixture at Prescot Cables Hope Street stadium which was the setting for Town’s first silverware success when in 1949 the team including Bert in goal lifted the George Mahon trophy in front of a crowd of 9,000. The trophy will be on display at the game by kind permission of the Liverpool County Premier League. This week we have been able to confirm the attendance of a number of guests at the game including members of the Trautmann Family, Steve Fleet who was Bert’s dear friend and goalkeeping understudy at City, and Sky Sports commentator John Gwynne who will provide some unique and colourful commentary in the stadium on the day. The day is shaping up to be a wonderful occasion to celebrate the life of a wonderful man and iconic football legend, and we invite our friends from all NWCFL clubs to join us on the day. Tickets are priced at just £5 for adults and £2 for U16’s / Concessions. We are also offering a VIP package for the day. For the price of just £100 the package offers admission for two people with complimentary match programmes, an invitation to the official pre-match reception along with invited guests including the Trautmann family and officials of Manchester City. Light refreshments and drinks will also be served at half time and post-match alongside the players. Two items of memorabilia from the day will form part of each package – a limited edition commemorative match medal in a presentation case (these will be presented to the payers and match officials); along with a framed full colour A3 match poster signed by players involved in the game. Anyone interested can contact me on 07908833554 or by email via [email protected] Enjoy the game.
