In the confused and stormy dark days that followed, even as we all gained some small measure of comfort from the extraordinary courage of our Fire and Police heroes, our naonal sense of security, safety, and even our some sense of identy in the wider world was deeply and perhaps forever shaered. In those days when our Archbishop, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America, ventured to Ground Zero offering prayer and solace to the survivors and rescue workers, the vanished Saint Nicholas Church was already beginning to speak up. There began in the hearts and minds of those siſting through the debris an uerance crying from that sacred ground unto the Lord on behalf of the blood of many brothers and sisters (cf. Genesis 4:10). And that cry became a story and a history – a story of those who were slain that fateful day, and a history yet to be wrien of the immigrant communies of lower Manhaan and their dream of America. That is why the Encyclical of the Holy Eparchial Synod of our Church in America is so compelling. As the Hierarchs state: “The new Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at Ground Zero will be much more than a rebuilt parish. It will be a Naonal Shrine of our Holy Archdiocese and a place of pilgrimage for our Naon and the whole world”. This recognion, this raising of the consciousness of every member of our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese to the value and significance of the Saint Nicholas Naonal Shrine at the World Trade Center is just the beginning. Saint Nicholas will be the only House of Worship in the enre sixteen-acre rebuilt World Trade Center site. Hence the Holy Eparchial Synod, under the presidency of Archbishop Demetrios of America, is calling for the enre naonal Church to become stakeholders in the new Saint Nicholas at the World Trade Center. In order for this edifice to truly be the Naonal Shrine it is called to be, it must be a Naonal Shrine for everyone. Orthodox and non-Orthodox. Chrisan and non-Chrisan. Believer and non-believer. This does not mean that as an Orthodox House of Worship, it will look or feel any different from any other Naos. In fact, the inspiraons of the architect are Hagia Sophia, the Church of the Savior in Chora, and the very Walls of Constannople! The interior of the finished Naos will be instantly idenfiable as an Orthodox Church with all the accoutrement, furnishings and, of course, plenful iconography. Saint Nicholas will funcon as any other parish with a rich liturgical life centered around the transfiguring cycles of feasts and fasts that define every year of the grace of the Lord. But as transfiguring as the liturgy is for the community that worships and understands what it is saying (cf. Acts 8:30, 31), there is a transformave role for Saint Nicholas to play for the Naon and indeed the world, as the Hierarchs have said. In a place where the ashes of mourning sll fall into the landscape of memory, we are called to bring glory, in fulfillment of the words of the Prophet (Isaiah 61:3). And this is no self-glorificaon, but a real sense of the transforming, glorious love of God. This a profound responsibility to be shared by every member of our Holy Archdiocese: to uphold the re-building and ministry of the Saint Nicholas Naonal Shrine at the World Trade Center by prayer, by fasng, by feasng, by material support, by sharing resources, by donaons, by telling the story from every housetop (cf. Luke 12:3), and wring a new history of human interacon and Divine love. This is precisely why housed within the Saint Nicholas Naonal Shrine will be a room of special purpose, a place of quiet non-sectarian reflecon and meditaon. And this is no concession to diversity – by no means! It is the exact opposite. It is the acceptance and even celebraon of diversity. It is the witness to the triumph of our Naon's values of freedom of conscience and mutual respect for all religious expression that does not violate the freedom of others. And is this not precisely what the terrorists of 9/11 did their worst against? Did they not rob our fellow cizens and fellow human beings of their most basic freedom – the freedom to live, by their horrific and madness-fueled murders? Our answer to such negave, hate-filled nihilism must be the affirmaon of life, liberty and the pursuit of true happiness.

A NAtioNAl ShriNe for everyoNe

On September 11, 2001, the thousands who senselesslyperished in the terrorist attacks of that day were only thefirst and most grievous losses to our Nation. In the confusedand stormy dark days that followed, even as we all gainedsome small measure of comfort from the extraordinarycourage of our Fire and Police heroes, our national sense ofsecurity, safety, and even our some sense of identity in thewider world was deeply and perhaps forever shattered. Inthose days when our Archbishop, His Eminence ArchbishopDemetrios of America, ventured to Ground Zero offeringprayer and solace to the survivors and rescue workers, thevanished Saint Nicholas Church was already beginning tospeak up. There began in the hearts and minds of those siftingthrough the debris an utterance crying from that sacredground unto the Lord on behalf of the blood of many brothersand sisters (cf. Genesis 4:10). And that cry became a story anda history – a story of those who were slain that fateful day,and a history yet to be written of the immigrant communitiesof lower Manhattan and their dream of America.

That is why the Encyclical of the Holy Eparchial Synod of ourChurch in America is so compelling. As the Hierarchs state:“The new Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at GroundZero will be much more than a rebuilt parish. It will be aNational Shrine of our Holy Archdiocese and a place ofpilgrimage for our Nation and the whole world”.

This recognition, this raising of the consciousness of everymember of our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese to the valueand significance of the Saint Nicholas National Shrine at theWorld Trade Center is just the beginning. Saint Nicholas willbe the only House of Worship in the entire sixteen-acrerebuilt World Trade Center site.

Hence the Holy Eparchial Synod, under the presidency ofArchbishop Demetrios of America, is calling for the entirenational Church to become stakeholders in the new SaintNicholas at the World Trade Center. In order for this edificeto truly be the National Shrine it is called to be, it must be aNational Shrine for everyone. Orthodox and non-Orthodox.Christian and non-Christian. Believer and non-believer.

This does not mean that as an Orthodox House of Worship,it will look or feel any different from any other Naos. In fact, the inspirations of the architect are Hagia Sophia, theChurch of the Savior in Chora, and the very Walls ofConstantinople! The interior of the finished Naos will beinstantly identifiable as an Orthodox Church with all theaccoutrement, furnishings and, of course, plentifuliconography. Saint Nicholas will function as any other parishwith a rich liturgical life centered around the transfiguringcycles of feasts and fasts that define every year of the graceof the Lord.

But as transfiguring as the liturgy is for the community thatworships and understands what it is saying (cf. Acts 8:30, 31),there is a transformative role for Saint Nicholas to play forthe Nation and indeed the world, as the Hierarchs have said.

In a place where the ashes of mourning still fall into thelandscape of memory, we are called to bring glory, infulfillment of the words of the Prophet (Isaiah 61:3). Andthis is no self-glorification, but a real sense of thetransforming, glorious love of God. This a profoundresponsibility to be shared by every member of our HolyArchdiocese: to uphold the re-building and ministry of theSaint Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center byprayer, by fasting, by feasting, by material support, bysharing resources, by donations, by telling the story fromevery housetop (cf. Luke 12:3), and writing a new history ofhuman interaction and Divine love.

This is precisely why housed within the Saint NicholasNational Shrine will be a room of special purpose, a placeof quiet non-sectarian reflection and meditation. And thisis no concession to diversity – by no means! It is the exactopposite. It is the acceptance and even celebration ofdiversity. It is the witness to the triumph of our Nation'svalues of freedom of conscience and mutual respect for allreligious expression that does not violate the freedom ofothers. And is this not precisely what the terrorists of 9/11did their worst against? Did they not rob our fellow citizensand fellow human beings of their most basic freedom – thefreedom to live, by their horrific and madness-fueledmurders? Our answer to such negative, hate-filled nihilismmust be the affirmation of life, liberty and the pursuit oftrue happiness.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,I hope all of our wonderful Glendi workers enjoyed the Ap-preciation Dinner on the 19th, a fun time was had by all,and a final thank you to all our sponsors/partners in thisgiant effort. We had a record breaking festival and I wasproud to be a part of it with all of you. Frankly we neededthat kind of result to keep going on a firm footing, things atyour community do not just happen they take team work, coordination and resources. We need your participation; weneed help with the programs in all areas that benefits all ofus. Some can only contribute with a financial commitmentwhich leads me into the letter going out this week on Stew-ardship, being a member of your community.

Stewardship is the life blood of our future we need yourtime and the talents you bring to the table and we also needto increase the membership with both new and the revivedactivation of old members. This Stewardship letter is goingout to those who have not made a contribution for the lasttwo years, why not? Are you part of the community YES orNO? It costs money to maintain your name on the roll, tosend you this mailing, to allow your children and grandchil-dren to be part of the many youth activities. We need a pos-itive step on your part, show us you care enough to belongto your church once again. The contribution we all make tothe health of our community is vital to having the programsthe activities we all want, the many things we all need for ourspiritual wellbeing. Please, I urge you if you get a letter, readthe letter and be part of the solution, join the church again.Call your adult children, bring the subject up at Thanksgivingdinner, and join your church.

I hope you were able to be a part of the teaching DivineLiturgy that Fr. Mike just completed. I know I learned some-thing with the explanations of exactly what he was doingand why. The Divine Liturgy is the core of our faith and any-thing that helps us get a deeper understanding can onlybenefit your life and your journey. I am sure we will have itagain in the future so we can all develop a richer apprecia-tion of our faith. Coming to church is the first step, pleasetry and make that step. Which we all do when we come tochurch and participate in the activities of your community.

I am writing this letter before the results of the Board elec-tion is known, but what I do know is that a fond farewell isin order for three departing Directors for the service theyhave done for their community. Phil Blatsos our treasurerhas served us all with his understanding of the law and fi-nance. We cannot thank him enough for straightening out

PreSiDeNt’S MeSSAgeThat is why the Saint Nicholas National Shrine will rise in theshadow of the Statue of Liberty. That is why we willwelcome all visitors who come in peace and with themutuality of respect that every human being deserves. Thatis why the Golden Rule will be emblazoned for all to see:“So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so tothem; for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12).Truly, such a National Shrine is worthy of a nation-wideeffort and campaign. The Holy Eparchial Synod, under theleadership of Archbishop Demetrios of America, is callingon the entirety of our Archdiocese to take up this noble andindeed glorious cause.

There is no other group of citizens who have thisopportunity. No other religious body that has such anobligation, such a duty to all other members of its society. The challenge is ours, and ours alone. The Greek OrthodoxArchdiocese of America has been given this solemn chargeand this sacred task. We are all called to give our finest andour best to this holy work of the Church. If all free humanbeings are citizens of Messolonghi, how much more are weall members of Saint Nicholas National Shrine at the WorldTrade Center! Let us all – each and every one – heed the callof our spiritual fathers, and join this journey of faith.

On Sunday, December 6, 2015, the Feast Day of SaintNicholas, we will be passing a second basket at theconclusion of the Divine Liturgy, for the benefit of the SaintNicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center. Wehumbly ask that you be generous in your giving that day. Ifyou are not going to be in Church on December 6 pleasemake your offering by check made payable to Saint GeorgeCathedral and marked Saint Nicholas Fund. Saint George willremit one check from the community to the Saint NicholasNational Shrine at the World Trade Center. We thank you inadvance for your generous spirit in giving towards thisnational institution of our Church here in the Americas.

May the light of that bright star which illumined the skiesover Bethlehem some two thousand years ago, allowing theworld to see the humble birth of our Lord and Savior JesusChrist, guide your every step toward Salvation. May Godbless you and your family at this holy time of the year withgood health and much happiness. Merry Christmas andevery good blessing for the New Year.

With Paternal Love in Our Incarnate Lord,

the often times convoluted sources of our income, and ourmany expenses. I know I have benefited from his explana-tions in layman terms how our funding happens and whatis needed to keep things straight and moving forward in apositive direction. Greg Timbas who has served for manyyears as our go to guy whenever anything needs fixing, heknows the boilers and the maintenance of our properties. He did the renovation of the parish house prior to Fr. Mike’sarrival. I’m sure we will be calling him with questions. Hetook the bids to fix a problem when he did not just fix it him-self which happened a lot, a real asset to his community.Ted Setas whose job commitments are forcing him to re-move himself from the board while he continues to headup the basketball program that benefits so many of ouryouth. He always had a reasoned calm approach to the is-sues facing us. These men know what the job of a directormeans, its service and work for the church you love. I knowthe new Directors will do their best, but we really owe athank you to Phil, Greg and Ted for their service, thanks guysit was a pleasure serving with you.

There is one last thing. On December 6th we will be doingan extra collection for St. Nicholas National Shrine at theWorld Trade Center. If you are unable to come to church, you can mail in a check and make it out to St. George Cathe-dral and put in the memo St. Nicholas National Shrine.

I want to wish each and every one a blessed, safe Christmasseason and a Happy New Year. Join with me in a prayer forour St. George community for the love we all share for ourchurch, for the less fortunate in our city and most of all forour country in these troubled times. May God bless you andyour family.

chriStiAN SteWArDShiPChristian Stewardship is a life style, which acknowledges ac-countability and responsibility before God. Becoming aSteward begins when we say we believe in God, to whomwe give our love, loyalty, and trust. We affirm that every as-pect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Stewards are mo-tivated as recipients of God’s abundant love, to respond byparticipating and supporting His plan of Salvation and theministries of His Church, which makes Salvation possible forthem and for others.

Thank you to those Stewards who have generously con-tributed to our 2015 Christian Stewardship Campaign. If youhave not yet submitted your stewardship pledge for 2015,or have not yet completed your stewardship pledge, we askthat you please do so before December 31, 2015.

The 2016 Christian Stewardship Appeal package will bemailed to you soon. Your Stewardship provides the foun-dation for our Parish Ministries and supports our efforts inmeeting the challenges of spreading Christ’s Word and our Orthodox Faith.

The Church understands the economic difficulties that manyare facing and suggests or actually encourages giving on amonthly or a weekly basis if it makes giving easier. TheChurch is an extension of our own home. It is the place thatcultivates strong families, values, faith and friendships. Andour Church truly needs our strong Stewardship support.Thank you so much! We are very grateful for your kindnessand your generosity.

We do this be-cause the Church feels that since she is so close to God thatshe will assist us in our prayers to Him. The service is aboutan hour in length.

From the beginning of Father Mike’s ministry he has had along running tradition of taking the parish children bowlingon the Sunday between Christmas and New Year. The tra-dition will continue here at Saint George.

On Sunday, December 27, 2015, Father will be taking ouryouth and interested parents to Lakeside Lanes at 2171Candia Road for an afternoon of bowling and pizza. We willmeet there at 1:00 p.m. Father pays for the bowling andyou are responsible for the shoe rental. We’ll all pitch in forthe pizza and cold drinks.

In order that the bowling alley knows how many lanes to re-serve for us, we need to give them a rough idea of how manypeople will be coming that day. Therefore, please let Fatherknow that you are coming on or before December 20, 2015.

Where iS bethleheM?

Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea. Where is Bethle-hem? Did the Son of God come to be born in a tiny hamletin a far-away place in Palestine? Or was He born there thatHe might come to be born somewhere far closer?

If Christmas is the time that God chose to come close to us,then Bethlehem must also be somewhere very close to us. Where is Bethlehem?

It is not very far away from us at all. Bethlehem is yourheart and my heart. This is where Jesus came to be born. This is where He wants to be born. This is where He wantsto live to bring us new life, the very life of God. If Christ, athousand times in Bethlehem to be born and not in yourheart and in my heart, then we have missed the wholemeaning of Christmas.

Where is Bethlehem?

“Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears myvoice and opens the door, I will come to him and sup withhim” (Revelations 3:20). There is Bethlehem.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me,and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart fromme you can do nothing” (John 15:5). There is Bethlehem.

“He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in meand I in him” (John 6:56). There is Bethlehem.

It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me,” saidSaint Paul for whom Bethlehem was within.

“Behold the tabernacle of God is with men, and he shalldwell with them, and they shall be His people, and GodHimself shall be with them, and He their God” (Revelations21:30). There is Bethlehem.

Invite the Lord Jesus to come and sit on the throne of yourheart as King, and Bethlehem will be within you. And whenit is, then the peace and the joy of Christmas will be withyou all year long. “And you shall call His name Emmanuel, which means God is with us”. God truly is with us, God trulyis in us. This is where Bethlehem is.

Saint Nicholas lived during the reign of Saint Constantine theGreat, and reposed in 330. As a young man, he desired to es-pouse the solitary life. He made a pilgrimage to the holy cityJerusalem, where he found a place to withdraw to devotehimself to prayer. It was made known to him, however, thatthis was not the will of God for him, but that he should returnto his homeland to be a cause of salvation for many. He re-turned to Myra, and was ordained as a bishop of the Church. He became known for his abundant mercy, providing for thepoor and needy, and delivering those who had been unjustlyaccused. No less was he known for his zeal for the truth. Hewas present at the First Ecumenical Council of the 318 Fathersat Nicaea in 325; upon hearing the blasphemies that Ariusbrazenly uttered against the Son of God, Saint Nicholas struckhim on the face. Since the canons of the Church forbid theclergy to strike any man at all, his fellow bishops were in per-plexity what disciplinary action was to be taken against thishierarch whom all revered. In the night our Lord Jesus Christand our Lady Theotokos appeared to certain of the bishops, informing them that no action was to be taken against him, since he had acted not out of passion, but extreme love andpiety. The Dismissal Hymn for holy hierarchs, “The truth ofthings hath revealed thee to thy flock” was written originallyfor Saint Nicholas. He is the Patron Saint of all travelers, andof sea-farers in particular; he is one of the best known andbest loved Saints of all time.

WhAt iS the Service of royAl hourS iN the church?

The Service of Royal Hours is a particularly solemn celebra-tion of the Little Hours in the Eastern Orthodox Church andin the Eastern Catholic Church. The Service of Royal Hoursare celebrated only three times a year as a preparation of theGreat Feasts of the Church; Christmas, Epiphany, and Pascha.

This service takes its name from the fact that it used to beofficially attended by the Emperor and his court at HagiaSophia in Constantinople. Because of the presence of theEmperor, there was a special singing of “Many Years” to theEmperor, the Imperial Court, and the Hierarchy. This singingof “Many Years” continues to this day (in modified form) inCathedrals and in Monasteries. By his presence, the Em-peror acknowledged his submission to Christ the True King. The three holy days on which the Royal Hours are cele-brated were chosen as days in the church year which mostparticularly demonstrate Jesus’ kenosis (self-emptying), andthus His true royal majesty.

Although the Royal Hours are beautiful and splendid, theyare also penitential. On days when the Royal Hours are cel-ebrated it is not permitted to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. The Royal Hours is an aggregate of five services, all servedtogether as one: the First Hour, the Third Hour, the SixthHour, the Ninth Hour, and the Typica.

At each of the Hours, one of the three fixed Psalms is re-placed by a Psalm that is significant to the Feast being cel-ebrated; the Troparion and Kontakion of the day arereplaced by numerous chanted hymns; and each Hour hasan Old Testament reading, a Prokeimenon, and an Epistleand a Gospel.

The Feast of Pentecost was a fourth time during the yearwhen the Service of Royal Hours was celebrated in the earlyChurch, however this service has not come to wide usagein the Church.

Each Hour commemorates a special event. First Hour (6:00a.m.), thanksgiving for the new day and prayers to maintaina sinless day. Third Hour (9:00 a.m.), the descent of theHoly Spirit on Pentecost. Sixth Hour (12:00 noon), the hourat which Christ was nailed to the Cross. Ninth Hour (3:00p.m.), the death of Christ on the Holy Cross.

We will be celebrating the Service of Royal Hours for theNativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, De-cember 24, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Please come and join us forthis beautiful and very moving service.
