A few thoughts …

OBSERVING A HOLY LENT

That season in the Church year which prepares us for Easter is Lent. For fortyweekdays (and the Sundays) the Church is draped in purple to remind us of thenecessity for repentance for all. While we may have different individual times for ourown sorrow and repentance, Lent is the declaration that the Church itself is sinful andin need of forgiveness through Christ.

On Ash Wednesday, the Celebrant invites everyone “in the name of the Church, to theobservance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word”. (BCP p.265)

Lenten opportunities to fulfill these disciplines will include:• The study of St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians at the Adult Forum

Sunday mornings;• The Lenten sessions on Thursday evenings on “God and America”, following

the Soup Supper;• Our Confirmation Class led by Deacon Jody, to be held at the same time as

the Lenten study;• Our Lenten Sunday worship beginning with the Great Litany on Lent I; and• Making your private confession by appointment with Fr. Dale. (If you haven’t

seen the Rite, look at the two offered forms in the BCP, p 447, and p 449.)

Please come and worship at one of our two Ash Wednesday services, which willbe held at 9:30 am and 7:00pm, on February 22. Pastor Brian Robison and St. Markwill join us for our worship this year.

Faithfully yours in Jesus,

Fr. Dale Coleman+

As a long time member ofSt. George’s, I am alwaysamazed at how things at St.George’s work out. When aneed arises there alwaysseems to be someone to stepup and help with the need. The last year, while servingas Senior Warden, I have be-come more aware of ourmany blessings and believethe dedication of Fr DaleColeman, our staff and pa-rishioners will prevail in anychallenge that may present it-self.

get for 2012 with substantialdeficit that has many of usconcerned. Through aware-ness and much prayer allthings are possible. With hard economicstimes and world conflicts thatwe see constantly in the mul-titude of instant electroniccommunications, we maylose sight of the many bless-ings at St. George’s. St.George’s parish is a vibrantcommunity of Christ ianssharing a common life inChrist Jesus. In a recent com-munication from our newBishop, Daniel Martins, itwas pointed out that of the36 parishes in the Diocese ofSpringfield only five of theparishes are self sustaining.St. George’s is one of those. This year we find ourChurch blessed with muchneeded additional staff ofAaron McNitt as AssistantSextant and Rev Joan (Jody)Coleman as Deacon. St. George’s EpiscopalChurch hosted the 134th An-nual Synod of the EpiscopalDiocese of Springfield onOctober 21-22, 2011. This

gathering of the churcheswithin our Diocese wasplanned and implemented bymembers of the Synod Plan-ning Commit tee of St.George’s Church. The com-mittee consisted of MarilynnBelleville, Tom Boschert,Chuck Evans and BrianMaves. The committee andthe many volunteers whohelped in assembling materialand manning the booths at themeeting deserve a word ofthanks. A driving force of St.George’s is the focus of ourmembers and the dedicationof so many individuals whodevote their time and re-sources to support the manymissions at St. George’s. Forthose who are new or are notfamiliar with the many out-reach programs, please takethe time to read the reportsin this Annual Meeting Book-let. As Senior Warden, I wishto thank everyone at St.George’s for all you do tomake Christ known to somany people.

At present we see a bud-

Paul’s arrival at thisthriving sea port and tradingcenter in 50 AD gave him agreat opportunity to widenthe Christian mission he hadbeen engaged in for manyyears. When Paul reachedCorinth (where he stayed for18 months), he found a plu-ralist religious culture at thestill new Roman Colony. Questions covered in thisimportant New Testamentwriting covered ethics, theEucharist, the truth of Jesus’Resurrection, how the sexesshould relate to another, andproblems in a church of widediversity, including wealth. New archeological evi-dence since the 1980s hasprovided many new insightsinto the make up of thechurch at Corinth. Fr. Dale is an adjunct pro-fessor of New Testament,Liturgy and Church Historyat Trinity Seminary.

Lenten soup suppersSeries Explores HistoryOf Religion In AmericaGod in America, PBS’ acclaimed series about how reli-gious faith has shaped America, will be the program forSt. George’s Lenten soup supper gatherings this year, tobe held every Thursday night beginning March 1 and con-tinuing through March 29. The series “examines the complex interaction of reli-gion and democracy, the origins of the uniquely Americanconcept of religious liberty, and the controversial evolu-tion of that ideal in the nation’s political arena,” accordingto PBS. It looks at the lives of leading figures in our reli-gious history, including John Winthrop, Anne Hutchinson,George Whitfield, Frederick Douglass, Thomas Jeffersonand Abraham Lincoln, William Jennings Bryan andClarence Darrow, Billy Graham, Martin Luther King andJerry Falwell. The evening begins with a simple soup supper at 6 p.m.A free will offering will raise funds for local human ser-vices organizations. The program will follow at 6:45. Plan to join us! — and if you like to make soup, pleaseshow off your best recipes for your fellow-parishioners!We will also need helpers to bring relishes and bread. Watchfor a sign-up sheet downstairs on the parish hall kiosk. The Community Service and Spiritual Growth Com-missions jointly sponsor these Lenten evenings.

deficit and the projected2012 shortfall. He asked ev-eryone to pray about theiroffering to the church. Hehoped those not currentlypledging will make a pledgeand those making pledgesmight consider increasingtheir pledges if they can.

At the meeting, parishio-ner David Lavely sounded asimilar chord, noting that ifeach of the parish’s 176households simply added$100 to their annual giving— about $8 a month — theincreased revenues woulderase the deficit and help re-plenish the reserve fund. Fr. Dale’s letter notwith-standing, the financial reportsurprised some attendees atthe meeting. They recom-mended that regular updateson giving versus expenses bereported in the Dragon, along with reports of vestryproceedings. These reportswill begin next month. In the good news depart-ment, annual reports showedthat the parish continues togive generously to the St.

absolution for their sins, theyare forgiven for them and re-leased from the guilt and painthat they have caused them. In the Catholic or Ortho-dox context, the absolution ispronounced by a priest. This tradition is very old.Over 1000 years ago a monkwrote in the Anglo-SaxonEcclesiastical Institutes: ‘Inthe week immediately beforeLent everyone shall go to hisconfessor and confess hisdeeds and the confessor soshrive him.’ Shrove Tuesday is a dayof celebration as well as peni-tence, because it’s the last daybefore Lent. Lent is a time of absti-nence, of giving things up. SoShrove Tuesday is the lastchance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods thataren’t allowed in Lent. During Lent there aremany foods that some Chris-tians - historically and today- would not eat: foods suchas meat and fish, fats, eggs, and milky foods. So that no food waswasted, families would havea feast on the shriving Tues-day, and eat up all the foods

that wouldn’t last the fortydays of Lent without goingbad. The need to eat up the fatsgave rise to the French nameMardi Gras (‘fat Tuesday’).Pancakes became associatedwith Shrove Tuesday as theywere a dish that could use upall the eggs, fats and milk inthe house with just the addi-tion of flour. Women’s ShelterNeeds Our Help We’ve Made History,

Let’s Record It This year marks three important anniversaries for St.George’s. We are 130 years old having been organized onlyfive after the first synod of the Diocese of Springfield. 2012also is the thirtieth anniversary of our relationship with St.Mark and the thirtieth anniversary of our ministry at Toddhall. The 30 years from 1982 to 2012 have been active andexciting. We have 30 years of newsletters and Annual Re-ports. Many of us have memories of those years. It’s time

to write a history of thelast 30 years. It’s time toremember. It’s time to re-search. It’s time to writeand tell the story. The last history of St.George’s was written forour 100th anniversary in1982. Since then, we builta new church, expandedour ministries into severaldifferent areas, began ourrelationship with St, Mark, developed and expandedthe Toddhall Retreat andConference Center. We’vehad three rectors, two cu-rates, five deacons andtwo music directors. Wehave hosted two synods. Our parish newsletter hasbeen named, renamed andrenamed again. If you would like tohelp research and writeour history of the past 30years, please contact TomBoschert.
