St. Francis of Assisi School News
Principal’s Corner Dr. Tricia Barber, Principal
Appreciation is extended to all of our families and friends who chaperoned the St. Francis School
and Parish annual tradition of St. Francis Day in the Park! It was truly a glorious day for fun and
fellowship. The St. Francis School sponsored “Cake/Dessert” Wheel was a crowd favorite at the
Sunday’s Francis Fest. The next October family activity will be the St. Francis Chili Cook-off.
Information is included in this newsletter and on the front page of the school website.
During the month of October, students in grades 1-8 will receive a lesson based on the Diocesan
Formation of Christian Chasity Program and creating a safe environment. The safety of your
children is always uppermost in our mind. All of our staff and volunteers have received the
required background checks and training. Lesson plans have been prepared for different age
groups and are available to review in our school office.

Hackathon – November 3, 10 AM – 10 PM
Attention: All Middle School Students
The time to register for HackBI is upon us! Please, visit hackbi.org to register and for more
information. You can register expressing interest without obligation to attend, but we of course
hope that you do! If in doubt, please err on the side of registering so we know you are interested,
in general, and can add you to our mailing list.
What is a hackathon? It is normally a 24-hour coding event, where people come together, form
teams and create a project of their own design for their own purpose. The project can be created
in any programming language and the best projects include marketing (web-site, graphic design,
etc). Hackathons are mostly done at the college level, but they are also done in the industry, often
with the purpose of solving real world problems.
We have modified our hackathon to an appropriate level for High School and 8th grade students
and we are awarding prizes to winners in several categories. The award for the best High School
project is a paid internship at a tech company in Alexandria (for each member of the team, teams
can have up to 4 members). For the middle school portion of the hackathon, we have modified it
to a 12 hour event (from 10 AM to 10 PM) and we have multiple beginning workshops. At the end
of the day, students will be paired up (they choose) and will have 2 to 3 hours to come up with
their own project. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. There will also be a
keyboarding competition with one winner (They can start practicing now!).
The workshops for this year's middle school students are HTML, Python (with Finch Robots), Alice,
JavaScript, GitHub, and Photoshop. They will get to choose whether they want to participate in the
Alice workshop or the HTML Workshop and they will also choose between the PhotoShop
workshop and the JavaScript workshop. All of the middle schoolers will attend both the HTML and
the Python workshops. If you have questions, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Terri
