Don’t get me wrong. I am thoroughly convinced that all of the stories recounted in the bible are true and happened just the way they are recounted. We must remember, however, that thousands of years of human experience are encapsulated in the relatively few pages summarized in the bible. Thus, when it seems like the only way God communicates with His people is by using angels, voices from the sky or even the tongues of fire that appeared on that first Pentecost Sunday, this impression is biased. Even though God does sometimes use sensational methods to communicate with His people, most of the time He is much subtler. This subtlety can often leave us with the impression that God no longer speaks with us today. Nothing could be further from the truth. Think about how much more present Jesus is to us today than He was when He walked on this earth some two thousand years ago. Two thousand years ago, the presence of Jesus was limited to the region of ancient Palestine. Today, Jesus’ presence is literally everywhere. He is present in all those who believe in Him through their baptism. He is distinctively present in the person of the priest through his ordination. He is present wherever two or three are gathered in His name. Of course, He is most perfectly present in the most Holy Eucharist were the substance of bread and wine is changed into the very body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. All of this happens through the gift of the Holy Spirit we receive at Pentecost. Perhaps this gives some insight into the most perplexing words that Jesus Christ ever speaks. At the Last Supper, Jesus tells His disciples, “It is better for you that I should go.” How in the world can it be better if Jesus leaves? Well, if Jesus leaves, He will send the Holy Spirit. There are at least two reasons why this gift of the Holy Spirit is better for us than the gift of the Incarnation was for the apostles. The first comes from the gospel of St. John. In this gospel, Jesus breathes on His disciples and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” The Holy Spirit completes the work Jesus was sent to accomplish by giving the power to forgive sins to Jesus’ apostles. But it gets even better. Not only does this gift of the Holy Spirit take away sins, it also makes Jesus present to us today in vastly superior ways. To understand this, simply look more closely at the sacrament of the most Holy Eucharist. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that the presence of Jesus Christ is manifested in the Blessed Sacrament. But, there’s more. Every day the Holy Spirit confronts us with the presence of Jesus Christ, but like what happens in the Blessed Sacrament, this presence is disguised. The exercise that strengthens our eyes of faith to see through this disguise is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. At mass, our eyes of faith strain to see the real presence of Jesus hidden in the Eucharist. This can be difficult because of the many distractions that take place at mass, especially when watching online or on TV. This is also why it is even more imperative that we help ourselves in this exercise by treating the mass with the utmost respect and sanctity. This we do by refraining from unnecessary chatter, by singing the songs and saying the prayers, by dressing appropriately, and by observing our posture reverently. All of these may seem trivial. Nevertheless, they do help us recognize what is hopelessly disguised to our senses. Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. It is only when we are able to recognize the hidden but real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist that we will ever be able to see Jesus when He appears to us disguised as that brother or sister that we find so difficult to love. Blessings,

7TH SUNDAY OF EASTER · May 24, 2020

Friends, Sometimes, I think, we tend to sensationalize the bible.
