What has been incredibly joyous for me personally is to see the desire of so many people to attend Mass without this obligation. It is a great sign of the vitality of our parishes that so many take the Mass so seriously. This might be, however, a good time to revisit this importance of Sunday Mass. With the obligation lifted it is easy to excuse ourselves from attending when we really should go. Perhaps obviously, the conditions that truly justify missing Mass are highly variable and depend on the individual person’s circumstances. A few examples may help. A twenty-five-year-old male’s tolerance for traveling in the snow is greater than a ninety-five-year-old female’s tolerance. Someone vacationing in the Canadian wilderness will have a harder time finding a church than someone visiting relatives in Omaha. Someone in the healthcare profession or with underlining conditions should be more cautious in attending Mass during the pandemic than someone younger and in good health. Nevertheless, it is important that Mass remains our first and most important priority. This is done, not for God’s benefit, but for our own. After all, the true challenge that our world presents is not that it is full of evil, but rather that it is so full of goodness. It is easy for us to focus on the limited goodness of created realities rather than the infinite goodness in the uncreated reality of Almighty God. When we do this, our priorities get out of order and some false idol becomes our God. For example, if I miss Mass because of a ballgame or work or some other priority, that ‘priority’ is more important to me than God. Not only does this have catastrophic eternal consequences, but it also has devastating temporal ones as well. After all, if God comes second to a ballgame or work or whatever, then our spouse comes third and our children fourth. Once God is replaced by an idol, the structure of our lives crumbles because the foundation is inverted. Thus, no matter the circumstances, attendance at Mass must be our highest priority. If the circumstances involve the weather or the pandemic or some other situation involving safety, a good rule of thumb is this. If you would venture out anywhere else, then you should venture out to go to Mass. If not, then you should not come to Mass either. Perhaps an example will help. Suppose your favorite high school team is playing in the state championship game. If you would try to get to Lincoln for the game, then you should be trying to get to Mass to worship Jesus. If you would not, then you should feel comfortable in missing Mass as well. Remember, though, if you choose to stay home because of such circumstances, you still are called to keep the Lord’s day holy. It seems reasonable to spend the same amount of time you would spend at Mass in private prayer. Watching Mass on livestream or on television is a wonderful option when you feel unsafe and cannot attend in person. However, it is not a substitute, especially if it is done because of convenience. Regardless of the circumstances, it should be brought to confession, even if it is not ‘sinful’ per se. Think of it this way. If you missed your daughter’s wedding because you were in the hospital with COVID, that would be perfectly understandable to anyone, including your daughter. Nevertheless, I suspect we would still apologize precisely because we really feel bad about not attending. Shouldn’t it be the same with Mass? After all, when God is first, everything else falls into place. In Christ, THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD · January 10, 2021

Friends, One of the most horrific consequences of the Pandemic of 2020 is the effect it has had on Mass attendance. Of course much of this is completely understandable. Recognizing the risks involved to attending Mass during this pandemic, the bishops themselves have lifted the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays as well as the other Holy Days of Obligation.
