Exploring Our Faith

Each time we celebrate Eucharist together, we are reminded that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, a cloud of Saints. In the Apostles’ Creed, which we profess each Sunday, we say, “I believe in the communion of saints.” In other words, we believe in an eternal bond between us and all those who have gone before us, between Saints and saints in the making. We invoke the Saints in each Eucharistic Prayer: “And so, with the Angels and all the Saints we declare your glory, as with one voice we acclaim: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts…” And towards the end of the Eucharistic prayers: “Have mercy on us all, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with Blessed Joseph her spouse, with the Apostles and all the Saints…” We also sing the Litany of Saints as we process to the baptismal font just prior to a baptism. In that litany, we ask the Saints to accompany us and give us courage to live our baptismal commitment as followers of Christ. During the summer months, during Ordinary Time, I encourage you to read a biographical account of one of the Saints, whether in book form or from the internet. At the summer BBQ, as you slather Dijon mustard on your burger or hotdog, let it be a reminder to get to know the young woman from Dijon, France, Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity, who died at the young age of 24. Or, get to know my favorite Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati of Turin, Italy who also died at age 24.

All of us, particularly the young, are in need of heroes and heroines, models who live for something larger than money, fame, and instant gratification or notoriety. Pop stars, movie stars, and sports celebrities surely can’t be all we have to offer our young people. The example they give is too small, too self-serving, and asks too little of us. We were made for enduring greatness, not the fleeting lure of power, prestige, and popularity. Since the first-ever recorded Mass on the shores of the Gaspé Peninsula on July 7th, 1534, we have been blessed here in Canada with the example of many holy women and men. Canadian Saints include Kateri Tekakwitha, Andre Bessette, Marguerite Bourgeoys, Marguerite d’Youville, Marie de l’Incarnation, Francois de Laval. Canadian martyrs include Saints Jean de Brebeuf, Noel Chabanel, Anthony Daniel, Charles Garnier, Isaac Jogues, Gabriel Lalement, Rene Goupil, and Jean de Lalande. Those considered blessed (one

step away from sainthood) include Marie Leonie Paradis (both she and St. André Bessette spent some time in Memramcook), Dina Belanger and nine others. The Saints were ordinary people who did extraordinary things through God’s grace. Some, like St. Philip Neri, had a wicked sense of humour. St. Philip was known to protest priests’ boring homilies by giving parishioners haircuts at the back of the church, during Mass! The favorite prayer of St. Philip Neri was, “Lord, don’t trust Philip.” Vatican II’s universal call to holiness lies open to us all. The Saints intuitively knew this calling and forever offer their lives as our guides.

The feast day of St. Elizabeth of the Trinity is November 8th. Her spiritual mission is to help us ‘pass through the

difficulties of our time with a greatness of soul’. So fitting for today!

Food Banks We hope that we will start receiving food donations once again now that churches are beginning to reopen! At this point, we will gladly accept whatever is offered but we could especially use canned pasta, rice and any kind of cereal. Thank you all so very much!

Please remember that you must call the parish office at 386-6178 each week to reserve the next

available spot for Mass.

Thank you!

Liturgy of the Hours - Morning Prayer The Liturgy of the Hours (Morning Prayer) is the official set of prayers marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. This, along with the Eucharist, has formed part of the Church's public worship from the earliest times. We invite you to join us each Thursday as we live-stream Morning Prayer at 9:00 a.m. If you have not experienced this beautiful liturgy before, we think you will find it very enriching.

Did You Know?

The opposite of love is not hate…it’s indifference. Are we aware of or are we indifferent to the needs and the problems of the poor, the immigrant, the ex-offender, the recovering addict, the prostitute, the disenfranchised? Ignorance and indifference to others is an enemy that must be reconciled.

Back to Mass!

To reserve a spot at Mass, please call the parish office at 386-6178, Monday to Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and noon. We will not take reservations outside of those hours and we cannot use email or texting as we need to speak with you when you call. There are specific questions we must ask you and some information that we must give you.

A phone call is required.

• To start, we will celebrate weekend Mass at our four churches, as per the original schedule.

• Peoples Park Tower will have to wait a bit longer. • No weekday Mass yet but we are starting Morning Prayer on Thursdays at 9:00 a.m.

(live-stream).

When coming to Mass, we need you to: • In the parking lot, stay safely 6 feet apart. • At the church door, stop and allow the volunteer to check you in. • Inside the door, stop and you will be given hand-sanitizer (your hands will be

‘squirted’ ☺). • Inside the church, follow the volunteer to your assigned seat. • During Mass, follow all arrows and markings on the floor, so we all stay safely 6 feet

apart. • During Mass, enjoy the Music Ministry, but for now, no singing in the pews but we’d

love for everyone to hum! • After Mass, respect the safety of keeping the 6 feet between you and your fellow

parishioners while leaving the building and when out in the parking lot.

Dispensation from Mass

We know that this is difficult but during the time of this pandemic, the dispensation of Sunday Mass is given for those who cannot go, for those who are fearful to go and for those advised not to go, to church. Rather, these faithful are invited to read the Word of God and to pray in their homes and to participate in the celebrations of the Mass via TV, radio and/or the Internet.

People over 70, those with medical or at-risk conditions and those who are fearful to be out during this pandemic, are asked to assess their own risk and ultimately, to make their own decision. While we are happy to see everyone again, ultimately, we want everyone to feel safe and to remain healthy.

Note: St. Elizabeth of the Trinity will continue to live-stream Mass and for now, that live-streaming will be from Immaculate Heart of Mary at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Wearing a mask is not mandatory, but it is encouraged. We even have some disposable masks at each church for anyone who asks for one. That being said, while masks are encouraged, when you’re sitting in your pew, safely 6 feet away from others, you can

certainly remove your mask, if you’d be more comfortable.
