Exploring our Faith

Blessed is the one who trusts in the lord, whose trust is the lord Over the years I’ve found that few teachings of Jesus are meant to be viewed as “required” behaviours, needed to please God and earn a place in heaven, as they are about a God who is already pleased by our existence and would love to see us live a life filled with meaning and joy. Luke’s gospel of “Blessings and Woes” is a shorter version of Matthew’s “Beatitudes” (Mt 5:1-11) and teach less about rules to be followed, as attitudes by which to live life more fully.

Jesus tells us that our life is enriched when we recognize that we are poor without God’s grace in our life; that we have been given everything we need by a God who loved us from the very beginning. Our lives will become even more blessed when we honour the presence of God in others, especially those who are the most vulnerable in the world.

Jesus tells us that our life will be fuller when we hunger to know God better and that our deepest hungers will be satisfied if we continually seek to discover God’s hopes for us and the world we live in.

Jesus tells us that our lives will never be empty if we trust in God’s love and mercy in times of loss and suffering, and if we reach out with compassion to others who struggle to find joy or hope, we discover an even greater joy.

Jesus tells us that God will strengthen and guide us when we stand up for justice, peace and the dignity of others, even though others may reject or ridicule our actions. God will abundantly bless anyone who works to protect the well-being of any of God’s creation.

The “woes” of Luke show that the reverse is also true.

When we place our trust and energy only in the values of the secular world around us, we will eventually be disappointed and diminished. We know that being financially secure and possessing many comforts is no guarantee of health, happiness or a life of meaningful purpose.

Having abundant food to eat does nothing to satisfy the deeper hungers created by loneliness, rejection or a lack of self-worth.

Living without cares or responsibilities will not protect us from the pain of loss or suffering.

Being admired or esteemed for your possessions, success or appearance is fleeting and is no indication of an ethical lifestyle or a life based on moral integrity.

As the first reading of Jeremiah tells us, when we trust and live by the values of God, we are like a tree that has its roots near a fresh spring. When the “droughts” of suffering and difficulty come into our lives, we are still able to live life with a fullness that bears fruit. Mary Joshi

Deb at 857-9531, ext. 1262 or [email protected] Sacrament Preparation Resource Committee will be meeting on Monday, February 25th at 2:00 p.m. at the Diocesan Offices on York Street. Medically Assisted Death and Challenges to a Good Death

With the legalization of Medical Assistance in Dying, we are invited as Roman Catholic Christians to give serious consideration to what we believe about death and dying. The Church holds the underlying principle of Choose Life among all others. We recognize the question of medically assisted suicide is a multifaceted one with no easy answers and believe therefore, it is important to have dialogue about this.

Dr. Nuala Kenny, as the past Ethics and Health Policy Advisor for the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada has been at the forefront of this conversation. In her book, Rediscovering the Art of Dying she addresses the ultimate medicalization of human suffering presented by medically assisted death, and expresses

concern about society’s increasing inability to accompany others toward a good death.

On Sunday, March 10th Dr. Kenny will be in our archdiocese to present on the impact of the legalization of Medical Assistance in Dying. As a medical doctor, medical ethicist, Professor Emeritus of Dalhousie University, Sister of Charity and author of over one hundred and eighty papers and four books, Dr. Kenny is nationally recognized as an educator and physician ethicist and travels extensively as a distinguished lecturer. We are delighted to welcome her for this workshop which will take place at St. Bernard’s Church Hall, Botsford Street, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $15, which includes supper.

Please register with Mark Mahoney at [email protected] or Ellen or Trevor by March 7th. Should you wish to purchase a copy of Dr. Kenny’s book, they are available for purchase at the Vision Book Store at Place de la Cathédral, 224 St. George St. (the basement of the Cathedral – side entrance off the parking lot) for $17. Anyone interested in this topic is most welcome to attend. The Challenge of Healing Together from Clergy Sexual Abuse

For the past 30 years, the Church - laity and ordained - has been reeling from reports of clergy sexual abuse. There is devastating and long-lasting harm for victims of abuse; there is pain, disillusionment, shame and anger for all members of the Church. Sr. Nuala Kenny serves as Advisor to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops Ad-Hoc Committee for the Protection of Minors and Chair of the Archdiocese of Halifax Yarmouth Ministry of Care and Companionship Committee. On Monday, March 11th, you are invited to join her at the Dan Bohan Family Centre from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for The Challenge of Healing together from Clergy Sexual Abuse. Please register with Ellen.
