THE LESSON:

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 6 beginning at the 1st verse

In the year that King Uzzi'ah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim; each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he

flew.   And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory." And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"  Then flew one of the seraphim to me, having in his hand a burning coal which he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth, and said: "Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin forgiven."  And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." Reader: Here ends the Reading.ALL: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 29 Afferte Domino1 Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, * ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; * worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. 3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;the God of glory thunders; * the Lord is upon the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; * the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor. 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; * the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon; 6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, * and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire;the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; * the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 8 The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare. 9 And in the temple of the Lord * all are crying, “Glory!” 10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; * the Lord sits enthroned as King for evermore.11 The Lord shall give strength to his people; * the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Revelation to John Chapter 4 beginning at the 1st verseAfter this I looked, and lo, in heaven an open door! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, "Come up hither, and I will show you what must take place after this." At once I was in the Spirit, and lo, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne! And he who sat there appeared like jasper and carnelian, and round the throne was a rainbow that looked like an emerald. Round the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clad in white garments, with golden crowns upon their heads. From the throne issue flashes of lightning, and voices and peals of thunder, and before the throne burn seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God; and before the throne there is as it were a sea of glass, like crystal. And round the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like a flying eagle. And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all round and within, and day and night they never cease to sing, "Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!" And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever; they cast their crowns before the throne, singing, "Worthy art thou, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for thou didst create all things, and by thy will they existed and were created."Reader: Here ends the Reading.ALL: Thanks be to God.

Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John

ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

Jesus said to them, "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ.

ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook: Canon Noel A. Burke, MAGreetings:

The late Catherine Mowry LaCugna (1952-1997) who was the author of God for Us: The Trinity and Christian Life as well as numerous theological essays on on the doctrine of the Trinity, states that

The task of the preacher is not to explain trinitarian doctrine but to remind us of our trinitarian faith, namely faith in the God of Jesus Christ.

Indeed LaCugna makes the point in an essay entitled “Making the most of Trinity Sunday” that it may seem strange that there should be a separate feast called Trinity Sunday since trinitarian notions of God permeate the liturgy.

Whenever we worship, pray or even in those moments when we think about our awesome and loving God we do so with a trinitarian understanding.

Our worship is linked to all that God has done for us from the creation of the world. When we read the Eucharistic Prayers we catch a glimpse of salvation history and the fact that God, Father Son and Holy Spirit seeks to be actively involved in our lives.

The God of relationship seeks to draw us into the fellowship of the Trinity in order that we may experience His fullness and receive grace upon grace. (John 1:16)

The trinitarian nature of the worship naturally includes the celebration of the sacraments.

From quite early a trinitarian formula was defined within the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Many scholars generally agree that the great command was connected to initiatory rites

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Matthew 28:19)

Trinitarian doctrine is not only connected to divinity, but rather as Alex F. Schlich states is bound up in our relationships with each other.

The Trinity dwells in our communities and institutions. Seeking to draw us together to work with a greater cohesion.

Personhood is vital in this doctrine as we explore the connectedness between divine and human love. The unity of the Trinity must then be located in our families strengthening that institution for the good of society.

We pray that the persons of the Holy Trinity may bring us all into fellowship, unite us and make us truly one.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon)Rector
