Lori Najvar MLA ’05 premiered her documentary, The Grove, Texas, to a standing-room-only crowd at the Paramount Theater in Austin. Her nonprofit organization, PolkaWorks, uses documentary, photography and public programs to illuminate cultural traditions in Texas.

MASTER OF LIBERAL ARTS (MLA)Embark on a journey of self-discovery. Design your own unique course of graduate study that aligns with your life interests. Learn among classmates who share your dedication to ethical and civic responsibilities, artistic sensibilities, spiritual interests and intellectual achievements.

• Deepen your understanding of the human experience as you examine issues across a broad range of disciplines such as anthropology, English, psychology, history and global studies.

• Supplement your studies with an optional internship. (Previous students have held internships at organizations such as Mexi-Arte Museum and Austin Area Interreligious Ministries.)

• Pursue one of our optional MLA concentrations — Humanities, Social Sciences, Social Justice or Global Issues — or choose a different course of study.

• Enhance your professional trajectory like MLA program alumni who have pursued careers in creative writing, public history, museum studies and

publishing; others have gone on to PhD programs and law schools.

• Explore a topic of your choosing in your final MLA special project. Create and present an original body of work that enhances public understanding/dialogue related to your area of study. (Past special projects have included international documentaries, original novels, musical performances and community service projects.)

A full-length play, Fantasmaville, written by Raul Garza MLA ’12, received the National Latino Playwriting Award. He also garnered a B. Iden Payne Award nomination for outstanding original script.
