PARISH NEWS:

It is time to look forward to the Fall! We want to begin planning monthly

Masses where Teens can participate. We also wish to plan

Teen Bible Study for two Saturday evenings each month. Adult and

Teen help will be needed to make this a reality. Planning Groups need

to be formed for both. Let’s get started on Monday, August 24 at

7pm in the school.

PASTOR

Because I will be on my three month Sabbatical in Rome

beginning on September 1, and due to the typically bad weather

in the winter months, Msgr. James Sullivan, the Dean of Dutchess County, has agreed that it would be wise to delay my formal Installation as the Third Pastor of St. Columba Church until Spring. We have chosen

Sunday, March 13 at the 12:00 noon Mass.

The next meeting of the St. Joseph’s Men’s

Group will be on Saturday, August 29th at 7am in the School

Cafeteria.

PARISH TRUSTEES - Each church, under New York State Law, is also a Religious Corporation. For each parish, the Chairman is Cardinal Dolan, The Vice - Chair is the Vicar General, and the Secretary is the Pastor. In addition, two parishioners are also appointed as Trustees. The appointment is for one year, and they may not serve more than three consecutive years. Parish Trustees are ex officio members of the Parish Council and Finance Council. They review and sign off on the annual budget and the annual end of year financial report. They are also available to advise the Pastor as needed. David Legare and James O’Connor have served as Trustees for three years and now must step down. We are grateful for all they have done for St. Columba Parish. Our new Trustees are Keith Slade and Mary Theresa Soyka. We are grateful that they have accepted this new responsibility.

St. Joseph Seminary on October 9, 2015 from 6 - 9pm Do you love the priesthood and religious life? Would you like to learn more about how you can promote vocations in your parish? Then join us for a delicious meal, free of charge, at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers. Our guest speaker is Rhonda Gruenewald, an expert from Houston who has literally “written the book” on how to effectively run a parish-based vocations ministry. Also at dinner, we’ll unveil our new four point Archdiocesan Vocation Plan. Please note: Attending dinner does not obligate you to more volunteer duties. It is a night to learn, be inspired, and perhaps take home some great practices to your parish. See more details and RSVP at: www.nypriest.com/vocationsummit

How do I get tickets to see the Pope? Tickets will not be sold and will be extremely limited. Pope Francis will be in New York for a brief time. It is anticipated that a limited number of tickets will be available for the Mass at Madison Square Garden. We assume that St. Columba will receive some tickets. We do not know how many we will receive. All registered members of St. Columba Church will have an opportunity to participate in a parish wide lottery. Sign up after Mass this weekend and next weekend or at the church office during the week (Monday to Friday 9am - 3pm). Please write your name, address, phone number and email on the index cards provided. One index card per family. If your card is pulled you will receive two tickets. The drawing will not be held until we know how many tickets our parish will receive for distribution.

Full Time Maintenance Position

A THREE MONTH STUDY SABBATICAL Priests of the Archdiocese of New York are offered the possibility of a Sabbatical once during their years of priestly ministry. The purpose of a Sabbatical is to be renewed in all aspects of life and ministry. Cardinal Dolan has offered and I have been accepted for a Sabbatical this Fall. It begins on September 1 and ends on December 1. During that time, Father Chris will serve as Temporary Administrator. Please trust that His Eminence will make sure the parish is properly cared for while I am away. Here is my Sabbatical Program as approved by Cardinal Dolan: September - Institute For Continuing Theological Education at the North American College, Rome. Includes a Retreat preached by Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, Preacher to the Papal Household and a “Study of Christian Art and Architecture” with visits to many churches in Rome and Assisi. October - Walking as a Pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago in Spain (French Route about 150 km). This will be followed by one week of service as Confessor at the Sanctuaire Note - Dame de Lourdes in France. I will be hearing confessions for five hours each day and offering Masses in English for Pilgrims. November - Back to the Institute for Continuing Theological Education at the North American College, Rome. The theme is “Evangelizing Today’s World - Skills for Priestly Ministry”. It will include a study of Pauline Scriptures “Walking in the Footsteps of St. Paul” and time in Malta. Certainly this is a “once in a lifetime” moment for me. I am a bit nervous for I have never been away from the USA for so long! But I believe this experience will certainly enhance my priestly ministry among you. Please pray for me, and know that I will carry you with me in prayer to all these sacred places.

Help Needed! It’s time to replenish the mulch around our playground equipment. It’s important for the safety of the children who use the playground. There are 550 bags of mulch and our maintenance staff cannot do the work alone! Please help us during our mulching day next Saturday , August 29 from 9 –1. Extra rakes and wheelbarrows are needed. Cold water and lunch will be provided. The playground is a great resource for both our parish and school. Please come and help us keep it safe and beautiful!

Calling those adults who desire to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion & Confirmation. Join us at: THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The reception of Sacraments for Catholics, i.e. Holy Communion and/or Confirmation, as well as inquiring about the Catholic Faith for those who are not Catholic, can be accomplished through a process called “The RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)”. It has its roots in the early Church and is a faith process that will prepare adults for full reception into the Catholic Church while answering their questions and supporting them on their personal journey to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. It is a process of prayer, discussion, study and celebration for:

• Adults who are not baptized as Catholics or in another Christian faith and have a

general curiosity about the Catholic Church.

• Adults who are baptized Catholics, but are in need of Sacramental preparation for

Eucharist or Confirmation.

• Adults who are not Catholic and are married to Catholics and attend Mass and other

services/activities regularly, and would like to learn more about the Catholic faith.

• Adults who have children who are preparing to celebrate Sacraments and wish to

celebrate them as well.

• The desire to learn about the Catholic faith is a sign of the Holy Spirit at work. The

RCIA process recognizes that conversion begins by the Holy Spirit and is an ongoing process. It respects each individual’s response to this journey of faith and therefore is conducted in four periods so that participants may freely choose to enter into deeper study and faith sharing along the way.

Please call the Deacon Warren & Elizabeth Testa at 227-8380. Sessions begin on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at 7:15pm in the School. Details to follow.
