PARISH NEWS:

CARDINAL’S STEWARDSHIP APPEAL 2017 Parish Goal - $105,000.00 Pledged as of March 1st - $54,295.00 Number of Gifts - 173 Average Gift - $313.84 Thank you so much! We are more then 1/2 way!

CARDINAL’S APPEAL IN PEW WEEKEND This weekend, Fr. Michael will speak at all Masses and invite your participation in the Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal. For the past few weeks, our parish has actively been conducting the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal. Cardinal Dolan mentioned in his letter to all parishioners that the Appeal is the life blood of our Archdiocese and critical to the work and life of each of its parishes, including ours. As we consider our pledge to the 2017 Cardinal’s Appeal, we recognize that all we have is a gift from God. As a sign of our gratitude, we respond with a gift to the Appeal, which helps all Catholic institutions do their work of ministering to the needs of God’s people. This work includes caring for our retired clergy and religious; educating our future priests; teaching children the truths of our faith; supporting parishes that need help with their expenses so they can still preach the Word of God and administer the Sacraments. This work also includes ministry offices that reach people of different ages and ethnicities. During this time of economic hardship, this is the most important time to make special sacrifices...and assist the work of the Cardinal’s Appeal. If you have been thinking and praying about a gift or a pledge, we hope that you might be able to make a decision today.

Diaconate Formation - Recently our Parishioner, Louis Pisani, took a leave of absence from the Diaconate Formation Program. Lou needs to deal with some

personal medical issues. Please pray for Lou that the medical community may come to a better

understanding of his physical condition, and in the hope that perhaps he could resume his Formation.

Three parishioners continue to participate in the Diaconate Formation Program: Chris Merenda, Stephen Broussard and Dennis McCormack.

Please continue to pray for them.

OFFERTORY GIFTS Would you like to take a turn at bringing forward the gifts of bread and wine? Just see an usher (look for the green ID tags) about 10 minutes before the start of Mass.

Congratulations to Steven Buck, who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Project, he and his volunteers constructed a 12 raised bed vegetable garden on our property. Beginning this spring, students and parishioners will plant and tend vegetables that will be donated to our St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. Steven also raised $1,800 to complete the project. Thank You Steven and congratulations!

For the month of April, we will discuss the Mass. “The Lord be with you… And with your spirit.. .Thanks be to God.” We might be familiar with the various prayers of the Mass, but do we understand the meaning, beauty and power of all we say and do in the liturgy? All are welcome! We will meet on Friday evenings in April in Rm 11 immediately following Stations of the Cross. CATHOLIC FUNERAL RITES By means of the Catholic Funeral Rites, it has long been the practice of the Church, not simply to commend the dead to God but also to raise high our hopes and to give witness to our faith in the future resurrection of the baptized with Christ. We encourage all Catholic families to continue, as much as possible, to follow the traditional practice of the Catholic Funeral rites - a Wake Service, a Funeral Mass and Burial in a cemetery. These Rites can and should be offered for all Catholics, those who practiced their faith and those who did not. We are aware that this may not be practical for all. Please contact a parish priest if you have any questions. One of the blessings of offering the Catholic Funeral Rites is that it gives people various opportunities to visit, to share condolences and to pray for the deceased and their family. On occasion, a person has requested cremation after death. If at all possible, please try to delay cremation until after the Funeral Mass. If this is not possible, we are still able to offer a Funeral Mass for the deceased. Afterward, please ensure that the cremated remains are properly buried in a cemetery or placed in a columbarium. Please do not: Keep cremated remains in a “domestic residence” or home Distribute cremated remains among family members Scatter cremated remains in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way. Preserve cremated remains as mementos in pieces of jewelry or other objects. While we try to accommodate all reasonable requests for days and times, we ask you not to make any plans until you have met with a Funeral Director, who in turn, will contact us regarding availability.

Next weekend we will take up a collection for the Catholic Relief Service (CRSC). This collection provides services for

immigrants, humanitarian aid in the wake of natural disasters, refuge for the displaced, and advocacy for

peace and justice around the world. Your support of the Catholic Relief Service collection makes a difference for so many around the world. Please prayerfully

consider how you can support it this year. To learn more, visit: www.usccb.org/catholic-relief

With prayerful best wishes for a blessed Lenten season,

I am, faithfully in Christ, Timothy Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York
