Cardinal Spellman Grand MarchGrand March has been a tradition at Cardinal Spellman High School for many years. It was originally created so the Sisters of Saint Joseph, who taught at the school, could see the students before they went to their prom. Even though the Sisters of Saint Joseph no longer live on campus, the custom still continues. Grand March is an event that truly accentuates the pageantry of a high school prom.

Fall 2013

Dear Spellman Alumni and Friends,

I am most honored to have the opportunity to serve as the new president of Cardinal Spellman High School. In the short time I have been at Spellman, it has become clear to me that I am very fortunate to be able to serve this extraordinary school at this point in time.

It is a humbling experience to follow the late Dr. John McEwan as president. I regret that I did not have the opportunity to meet this fine man. His contributions to his alma mater will long be remembered. In particular, his impact on the academic excellence at Spellman has made a dra-matic difference in the curriculum and the educational opportunities available at the school. Dr. McEwan has left an indelible mark on Cardinal Spellman High School.

I want to assure the Spellman family that I already have come to respect the Spellman traditions and excellence. The unique nature of the school is evident and has become known to me early in my tenure. The teaching faculty and staff are committed to not only the academic development of each student but the spiritual and emotional development of the fine young men and women that we serve. Having worked in independent Catholic schools across the country, I can tell you that Cardinal Spellman holds a unique place, not only in the Archdiocese of Boston, but in Catholic education as a whole.

As proud as we all rightfully are of today’s Spellman, the school is poised to add another noteworthy chapter in its storied history. Opportunities abound to increase enrollment, build on academic excellence, and create a model independent Catholic school campus that will better serve the needs of current and future students.

Spellman is a school that lives its motto, “Sequere Deum” - Follow God. Our students are highly motivated to practice their faith. Liturgies are conducted with exceptional fervor – a trademark of the Spellman experience. One only has to witness a Spellman mass to know this is true. Spellman is a Catholic school with a capital “C.”

Even though the school year ended on a somber note, with Dr. McEwan’s passing and the tragic loss of Joey Glynn, a 2012 graduate who was the epitome of what a Spellman young man should be; the 2012-2013 school year was a very successful one.

The school year was highlighted by memorable drama productions, the continuing excellence of the choir, strong academics and student achieve-ments, as well as athletics led by a state track championship. We graduated an excellent class with very meaningful baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies in spite of inclement weather. More than 97 percent of our graduates are continuing their studies in higher education, earning mil-lions of dollars in scholarship money. Their achievements are to be commended.

During the search process for the position of President of Cardinal Spellman High School, it was my good fortune to get to know Board of Trustees’ Chairman, Barry C. Cosgrove. Everyone associated with Spellman owes Barry a sincere debt of gratitude. His 10 years as Chairman of Spellman’s board have been truly transformational in nature.

Barry turned the gavel over to Gerrie Mahoney in July. Gerrie is also a Spellman graduate and a person deeply committed to her alma mater. Gerrie will provide strong, insightful leadership. I personally look forward to working with her and her fellow trustees to keep the positive momentum going.

I hope each of you will find a way to be part of the future of this fine school and lend your support to that end. Each of you is a stakeholder, and each of you has the opportunity to see and contribute to the success of the future of Spellman. It will only be with your support and efforts that Spellman will achieve the next level of excellence.

So join in. It’s going to be an exciting time to be part of Spellman as it moves toward being the preeminent independent Catholic high school in Massachusetts. I could not be more excited about the future of Cardinal Spellman High School and serving as its president.

For Spellman, I am,

Fall 2013

Dear Members of the Spellman Community,

As the incoming Chair of the Cardinal Spellman High School Board of Trustees, I am proud and honored to serve our Spellman community. I assume this role with the full understanding that the school we are today is the direct result of the efforts and contributions of all who have come before us. The Sisters of St. Joseph, who staffed and led our school, worked tirelessly and unselfishly to ensure that each student had the opportu-nity to receive an outstanding Catholic education. Our former president, Dr. John F. McEwan, directed the successful completion of many vital enhancements to our school’s curriculum, academic rigor, facilities, technology and extra- curricular activities. We can be assured that Cardinal Spellman is well-poised to continue our mission of excellence in Catholic education. We will be forever grateful for all that the Sisters of St. Joseph and Dr. McEwan have accomplished for us.

In addition, we also want to thank our outgoing Chairman, Barry C. Cosgrove ’75, who has provided great leadership over the past decade during the transition from religious to lay leadership and from an Archdiocesan-funded school to a financially independent Catholic school. Barry Cosgrove’s unparalleled guidance, vision, commitment and support, combined with the efforts of the administration, faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, friends of Spellman and the Board of Trustees have us well on our way to becoming the premiere college preparatory, co-educational, independent, Catholic High School in Massachusetts.

In order to maintain excellence, we know that we must focus on the present and look toward the future to ensure that we continue to provide an outstanding experience for our students. Toward that end, I am thrilled that Julian Peebles has joined the Spellman family as our new president. Julian brings a wealth of educational leadership and expertise to Spellman and is eager to lead our school through its next important chapter. Us-ing the framework established by the Strategic Plan completed in 2012, we will continue to focus on our goals: to prepare our students for future success, to integrate faith with action, to develop an expanded state-of-the-art campus, to strengthen our community relations and to manage our financial resources wisely. I am excited by the possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead for Cardinal Spellman High School.

As we begin the new school year, I would like to welcome our faculty, administration, staff and students back to campus with a particularly warm welcome to the many new faces in our largest incoming freshman class (class of 2017) in recent years. Cardinal Spellman High School is very fortunate to have an extremely dedicated and talented administration, faculty and staff who are eager to engage all of you in your educational en-deavors. I encourage all of our students to take advantage of the many spiritual, academic, and extra-curricular offerings and to do your very best as you chart your path toward fully utilizing your God given abilities and maximizing your potential.

You have my firm commitment that I will do my very best to continue to make you proud of our school. Sequere Deum!

For the Board of Trustees, Geradine A. MahoneyGeradine A. Mahoney ’84

letter from Barry Cosgrove

Dear Spellman Community:

Thank you for the privilege to have served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cardinal Spellman High School. And thank you to the entire Spellman Community for all that Spellman has given to me as well as to our many alumni and current students.

On July 24, 2013, my term will expire and Gerrie Mahoney (Class of 1984) will assume the chair position.

At this time of transition, you should take great pride and comfort in knowing that Cardinal Spellman High School is in very good hands and is in very good shape. Indeed, by almost any measure, Spellman is in terrific shape, and better yet, poised to achieve operational and educa-tional excellence as never before. As well, our unmistakable and vibrant Catholic identity is stronger than ever.

The past ten years at Spellman were characterized by unprecedented change. After operating since 1957 as one of the Archdiocese of Boston affiliated high schools (and benefiting from the financial support of the Archdiocese accordingly) Spellman became a fully independent Catho-lic High School with its own Board of Trustees to guide its academic and financial future in 2004.

Over the next several years the Sisters of St Joseph, who had blessed Spellman with almost five decades of instructional, spiritual and opera-tional leadership, gradually retired. As a result, Spellman now operates without any Sisters of St. Joseph working or teaching in the building and the convent no longer serves as their home.

As these changes unfolded, more changes had only just begun. We com-pleted two strategic planning processes, appointed our first lay President, materially upgraded and expanded our physical plant, installed and implemented many of the most advanced technological resources and teaching tools attainable, and achieved solid and growing enrollment. We also attained an improved financial condition, continued our com-mitment to affordable tuition (despite losing the essentially volunteered services of the Sisters), sharply improved our diversity, won the Sadlier Award for unmatched nationwide excellence in demonstrating Catholic identity, won The Nason Award for our sports program performance, and continued to earn rock star status for our Masses and our school choir, and theater performances. In addition we narrowed modestly the legacy salary gap between public school faculty and our faculty. And most importantly of all, we prepared thousands of students for success in top colleges and universities and otherwise.

None of these changes were without risk, and all of these changes were for a clear and specific

purpose…. to serve as the bridge from our terrific past to a new and promising future of Catholic identity, education and service.

In building this bridge Spellman also achieved another important ac-complishment… it purposely maintained its appropriate and lasting grip on those components of our cherished past which must never be left behind. In other words, we constructed this bridge with the steel and girders of Spellman’s undeniable commitment to faith, family, and spirit

And while the changes which have helped build this bridge are already yielding high results, Spellman’s mission requires that the changes have only just begun. Change is the toll we pay for assuring our students of a stable, engaging and enriching trip on a carefully mapped course toward a meaningful future, loaded with good options.

What must never change at Spellman is our commitment to our mis-sion and to the preservation of our unmatched school spirit. While all of us are as different as can be from one another, we are precisely alike in understanding that our mission is what matters most and it is our Spell-man spirit which best equips us to achieve this mission.

And it is this same spirit that pulls us together, not apart, at our difficult times. In a matter of what seemed to be only days apart, we recently lost four Spellman legends. The Spellman spirit that accompanied these tragic losses was witness that our entire community is one, in a way that is right, yet rare.

Cardinal Spellman High School’s success will continue to hinge upon a bold refusal to travel only upon paths that already exist and to instead move deliberately toward building our next bridge; and then the next bridge after that. Otherwise we are waiting upon our future, and that is not in the best interest of our students and therefore not what our mission demands.

Please continue to do what you can do to help this great school, which has already helped so many. When you look back across the bridges you will help construct, you’ll know you got it right.

Thank you and may God Bless you and Cardinal Spellman High School.

This year’s Golden Diploma Class of 1963 were honored at the 51st Commencement of Cardinal Spellman High School on May 23, 2013. The class members were treated to a reception in the Fitness Center. They were able to take tours of the school and reminisce about their years at Spellman. Their celebration of their 50th Reunion culminated at the formal reunion in October.

Each year, a new class will be honored with their Golden Diplomas. The class of 1964 will be honored at commencement on May 22, 2014. The commemorative diploma ceremony and is a nice addition to the 50th reunion celebration. There have been many changes to Cardinal Spellman High School over the years, so it is a great excuse to come back to Spellman to reconnect with classmates and tour the campus.

Cardinal Spellman High School remains committed to the lessons the Sisters of Saint Joseph began teaching at the school over 50 years ago.

Class of ‘63 Earns Golden Diploma

The 144 members of the 2013 Cardinal Spellman High School graduating class will always be able to tell the story of their graduation ceremony being moved indoors due to inclement weather and how the rain never arrived.

Spellman’s Principal Paul Kelly hoped it would pour once the decision was made to move com-mencement indoors and he joked to the audience about it during his speech. The ceremony marked his first as principal at Cardinal Spellman and he knew he would always remember.

The rain never came, but being indoors didn’t sour the facial expressions of any students. Most were unable to hide their joy as they received their diploma and officially became graduates.

2013 Class President Terrence (TJ) Wells delivered one of the

best commencement speeches in recent memory. “To outsiders we may appear to be a very ordinary class.”, Wells said. “A group of 144 children thrown together from many different towns all with the same goal – to get to graduation, to walk up and down this stage, receive a diploma, and Instagram a semi-artsy picture later with some corny caption along the lines of: “started at the bottom, now we’re here” #2013. However, nobody else will ever be able to say that they were a part of the Cardinal Spellman class of 2013, for better or for worse.”

TJ quoted himself when he advised his classmates to dream big. “The only person holding you back from success is yourself,” he said. “Embrace who you are and stay true to yourself, discover your passions, and pursue happiness. I leave you with these thoughts be

cause it’s often the smaller things in life that most people overlook. We have spent four years building our character, friendships, and memories, now it is our turn to take these values that Spellman has instilled in us into the new chapter of our lives.”

“Take one last look around be-cause this is the last time we will ever be gathered together in one place as the class of 2013. I love you all, now go out and change the world.”

When the school song came to an end, the graduates threw their caps towards the ceiling of the auditorium and the celebration began. As the students celebrated, several members of the class of 2013 hugged their friends, parents, and teachers with the words of Cardinal Spellman Principal Paul Kelly likely still on their

minds. “Hope turns faith into ac-tion. Hope drives us to persevere through obstacles, believe in hu-manity, get back up after we have failed, to forgive when we’ve been hurt, to heal, to rejoice, to laugh, to sing, and to forge ahead.

Hope ultimately leads to love and love is simply a synonym for God. Knowing and trusting God is what life is all about. It starts with hope, my friends. Never lose hope. Cling to it, be driven by it and pass it on. That is my hope for you today and always!”

Danielle Connolly, of Abington, was named the 2013 Cardinal Spellman High School Valedic-torian. Leonard Paoletta III, also of Abington, is the Salutatorian. Both students delivered speeches to the 2013 graduating class.

During her time at Spellman, Connolly was a member of the National Honor Society. She also

participated in the Big Brother Big Sister mentoring program and she was a peer tutor.

Connolly plans to attend Northeastern University to study Pharmacy. She hopes to become a Pediatric Pharmacist and work at Children’s Hospital in Boston. She also hopes to be an advocate for and work with patients who have mitochondrial disease, since she herself suffers from the same disease. She is planning to spend her free time this summer vol-unteering at Children’s Hospital entertaining the patients in the waiting room.

During his senior year, Lenny Paoletta was a captain for the soccer team, winter track team, and spring track team. He was

an eastern Massachusetts all-star, league all-star, and two-time all scholastic in soccer. He also earned the all-scholastic honor in winter track. In addition to being a Harvard Prize Book award win-ner, Paoletta is a member of the senior class executive board and he appeared in the school musical this winter.

In the fall, Paoletta will attend the Commonwealth College at the University of Massachusetts Am-herst to study sports management and business. He hopes to attend law school after UMass and pur-sue a career in corporate law.

Cardinal Spellman High School Principal Paul Kelly is very im-pressed with this year’s Valedicto-rian and Salutatorian. “Spellman is very proud of both Danielle Connolly and Lenny Paoletta,” Kelly said. “They are both well-rounded, outstanding individuals. They are accomplished in many ways and they have shown a great deal of service to the community. They both represent the values and accomplishments of the ideal Spellman student.”

Seussical the Musical by Andrew Child ’15 & Juliana Child ‘14

“A person’s a person, no matter how small.” “Oh the thinks you can think, if you’re willing to try.” “Anything’s possible.” All beau-tiful sentiments, and all from the mind of one brilliant man. Seussical the Musical is an exciting stage production that combines the classic stories of Dr. Seuss. The cast of characters includes such lovable per-sonalities as Horton the Elephant (TJ Wells, 2013), Gertrude McFuzz (Brittany Churchill, 2013), JoJo the Who (Sarah Kelly, 2014), Mazie LaBird (Molly Frazier, 2013) and The Cat in the Hat (Andrew Child, 2015), as well as some whimsical “bad guys” such as Vlad Vladikoff (Emma Gasson, 2013), and the Sour Kangaroo (Emily Wells, 2013).

Along with these, an ensemble of over 75 Spellman students portrayed color-ful zebras, lions, crocodiles, bird girls, Wickersham brothers, and of course microscopic Whos. All of the char-acters together created a world full of imagination, creativity, and adventure. Complete with wildly colorful sets, crazy-looking costumes, and dozens of catchy tunes, Seussical is a musical that people of all ages can enjoy.

Although at first it seemed simple and childish, the cast and crew quickly became aware of how challenging Seussical was. The singers had to perform music of every style and genre, from soulful renditions that shadowed Aretha Franklin and Louis Armstrong to fast-paced melodies which mimicked Sondheim and Gilbert & Sullivan. The themes in the show are profound and border controversial topics about acceptance in our society. There was no room for error. Everything

from the Temptation-esque harmonies of the bird girls to the preci-sion of the high-energy group dances had to be perfect.

Spellman’s musical was directed by Dorrie Bessette (1969) and Su-zanne Neuman (1986), with brilliant sets designed by Pat Madigan (1972). Dr. Seuss’s iconic illustrations were brought to life by dozens of Spellman students working tirelessly behind the scenes. Challenges included building deceptively impossible structures such as twisted pianos, a giant magnifying glass, and truffula trees, painting over 40

bioluminescent fish, and recreating images that are instantly recognizable from childhood, such as Whoville and the Jungle of Nool.

Seussical was produced by the beloved Janet Nickley Madigan (1971), a devoted member of the Spellman family who passed away just a few months after the show. The cast and crew of the Spellman Drama Society could all agree that Janet was the heart and soul of this production.

Because of her creativity; Seussical was indeed a triumph. The students played to nearly-sold-out crowds. They received enthusiastic feedback from the audience at every performance despite an unexpected bliz-zard that threatened ticket sales on opening night.

The hundreds who participated in and supported Seussical can defi-nitely look back on the experience with pride. In just two months, the cast and crew put together a show that was visually appealing, musi-cally impressive, humorous, energetic, heartwarming, and entertaining. There were no small roles; everyone played an important part in the making of a wonderful show. Seussical will go down in history as one of the greatest musicals Spellman has ever produced.

Junior Book AwardsJunior Book Awards are donated from colleges so that high schools can recognize many of the top students in the Junior Class. Some of the awards are simply books sponsored by alums of the college, and several of the Book Awards come with scholarships attached if the winners are accepted to and enroll at the college. A committee at

Spellman reviews the requirements for each award, and selects stu-dents who fit the characteristics the colleges are looking for. Receiv-ing a Junior Book Award is considered to be a prestigious award at each high school. The colleges represented vary from high school to high school.

Early in the 2013 school year, Matthew Freeman won the Cardinal Spellman High School Talent Show with a talent rarely seen for someone his age.

In a competition normally won by upper classmen, Matthew won the talent show as a freshman. His talent was so impressive, it would have been very difficult for the judges not to name him the winner.

Matthew put on a fashion show featuring his own work. He de-signs, sews, and creates theatrical costumes and elegant dresses.

“I didn’t want to be overly self-confident, but I had heard of Spellman’s talent show before I came to the school,” Matthew said. “I actually started planning for it last summer and started creating dresses then to get ready. I really wanted to win.”

Matthew has always had unique interests. He has been taking dance lessons in Tap, Jazz, and Ballet for seven years, but he credits his Grandmother with his interests in sewing.” My Nana got me into sewing and then when I was eight years old, I asked for a sewing machine for Christmas.”

“My mother was able to get it for me and since then I have just been

working to refine my techniques. I haven’t taken any classes on how to specifically make the dresses. It is basically trial and error. I have used patterns, but I usually modify them or create my own. I took a class on how to use the sewing machine, but that is it.”

Matt was in 7th grade at Trinity Catholic when he put on his first fashion show. He cre-ated a version of Princess Kate Middleton’s wedding dress and a prom dress to display. The show at Trinity marked the first time anyone in the general public saw Matt’s designs. The response was overwhelmingly positive and it was then he knew designing was something he really wanted to pursue as more than a hobby.

“My mom had been giving me her opinion the whole time, and I was happy with how everything looked, but I wasn’t sure about everyone else,” he said. “My mom is my best critic. She will always tell me if she likes something or if she thinks I need to make a change and she isn’t afraid to be honest. I have to thank my mom because she helped out so much with the Spellman Talent Show. She was able to do everyone’s hair for the fashion show and make them really look like the Disney characters they were dressed as.”

Matthew is truly gifted at his craft and he hopes to take his talents to Broadway and beyond. “My plans for the future involve creating costumes on Broadway,” he said. “I am thinking Broadway and wedding attire.”

After he debuted his talents at the fashion show, Matthew was approached by several Spell-man girls to gauge his interest in making their prom dresses for them. He is hoping to oblige. “My next themed fashion show I do is going to be prom themed dresses and I hope to be able to sell them,” he said. “I already have my logo and colors picked out for my design label. The design name I chose is Designs by Matthew Philip.”

Spellman’s technological advances have helped Matt refine his craft. “The iPads have assisted with my design skills so much. I use the sketchbook app to create a bunch of my designs.”

Matt is very active in Spellman’s drama program as both an actor and a costume designer. He is also in the choir. He is extremely happy he chose to attend Cardinal Spellman. “I can’t see myself at any other high school,” he said. “At Spellman you can just be you. Everyone goes to the shows

and sporting events and supports each other all the time. I feel like people were really rooting for me. Everyone congratulated me after winning the talent show and I wasn’t expecting that. It was great.”

12 Cardinal Spellman • tradition

Julian Peebles began his role as President of Cardinal Spellman High School in June of this year and he has been overwhelmed by the warm welcome he has re-ceived. “People have asked me why my wife and I would leave Indiana and travel 1,000 miles away from our family to take this position. The truth is that I was looking for a new challenge and my wife reminded me that I was happiest when I was President of my alma mater, Cathedral High School in Indiana. So we decided to search for a Catholic school that was looking for an experienced leader. I was looking for a school to lead and Spellman was look- ing for someone to hit the ground running. I couldn’t be happier to be here.”

Julian’s career has come full circle in a sense, as he started his career as a history teacher and coach for his Alma Mater, Cathedral High School in Indiana. As his family grew, Julian decided to go into the dairy business and ran his own successful distribution company for many years. But Julian had always wanted to go back to Cathedral so he applied and was hired several years later as their President. “The selection process was exceptionally competitive and in the end I was gratified that the Board chose me to lead the school. During the next decade while under my tenure the school

more than doubled in size and we were able to invest almost twenty million dollars into the growth of the facility. It was this experience that prompted me to seek the Presidency of Cardinal Spellman.”

Julian is impressed with the Spellman faculty and students. He knows from his experience in working with over 500 schools in Indiana that Spellman is not a typical high school and that it has many many reasons to be proud. “The school has many things to celebrate. For instance, Spellman had 144 graduates in the class of 2013 walk, 141 have gone on to college, one to trade school and 2 have joined the military. This is terrific!”

One of Julian’s first experiences with the students and parents was this year’s Freshman Orientation. “It was great. It was very uplifting for me to see how enthusiastic the parents were to have their child coming to Spellman. It was a wonderful way to start off my first academic year.”

Julian hopes to help guide and inspire the Spellman community to grow and move to the next chapter in its history. “I feel that if we can offer a great education to students then we should strive to give more kids the opportunity to get this great education. We can do this is by enhancing our fundraising efforts, improving our facilities and continuing to hire the best and brightest teachers.”

New Admissions Director Aimee WetzelMy mission is to share all that Spellman has to offer ... so that prospective parents and students have the opportunity to make Spellman their target destination.

Spellman Reunion News

Aimee Wetzel joined the Cardinal Spellman High School staff in September of 2009. Aimee worked closely with the late Dr. John McEwan as Executive Assis-tant to the President. She has also provided assistance and support to the Board of Trustees, the Ad-vancement Office and the Busi-ness Office. Aimee most recently

served as Spellman’s Human Resources Manager. It is clear that when there was a need, Aimee was first in line to serve the Spell-man community in any way that she could. Aimee’s background as founder and president of the former DesLauriers Fine Jewelry corporation, which she operated successfully for more than ten

years, served her well in support-ing Administration over the last four years. Ultimately, Aimee earned the place where she could truly make a difference and best serve the Spellman family. “It is my honor and privilege to serve in such an important role at Cardinal Spellman High School. It’s my mission to share all that Spellman

has to offer with our surrounding communities so that prospective parents and students have the op-portunity to make Spellman their target destination.”

Aimee resides in Braintree with her husband, Michael of 13 years and her two sons, Christian age ten and Brady age six.

Life is simple. But…it is not easy. This same is true of being a Christian. We are told to “Love one another as I have loved you”. And we are told to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mathew 22:37). These are simple commands to understand, but they are not easy to live out in a world that moves information so quickly and understanding and compassion so slowly. And while we know that the crucible of living as a good person, a good Christian, a good Catholic is in the doing , there are moments when we must decide. And when those moments of truth come into our lives, we must make a choice.

It is then the words of Mary at the marriage feast of Cana can help guide us; “Do whatever He tells you”. These words are not hard to un-derstand. But oh how hard they can be to follow.

How did Mary know that by doing whatever He tells us, that such powerful and peaceful things would happen in our lives? How could she possibly know? I think she knew by the light of faith. She had faith in the Miracle Worker. She knew, by that light of faith, that if the servants within the sound of His voice did what He said, miracles would take place in their lives. She knew in her heart. And the change that took place in the wine vessels at the wedding feast was plain for all to see. Water to wine, because they believed and did what He told them to do. The servants and guests could not explain it, but they could see it and they could believe it. At Spellman, we believe these miracles can and do happen in our daily lives.

And yet it is so hard in the technological world where have an opinion about everything thrust upon us daily, “to see and hear” clearly. We have a thousand experts telling us daily what to do and how to do it and, in the process, we can lose confidence in that quiet internal voice that reminds us to “Do whatever He tells you”. Amid the din of constant information, listening to that quiet voice can bring us to the place of peace where we feel at home. We feel at home in that place because we are re- turning the spirit who sent us and who loves us. We can sense it. Returning to a place where we are loved, returning to the Spirit who loves us will come from doing the simple things He told us to do.

This return journey to God is not easy nor will it happen purely by reason. It will be made possible by faith. We know that neither faith nor reason will answer all our questions. But when we use both gifts given by the Miracle Worker our lives become richer and miracles begin to take shape in what we do. Our satisfaction is greater and our work is made easier.

We reason that most situations in life are not completely good or bad, they are both. They are not understood absolutely or matters of complete doubt. They are both. We are not merely flesh and blood. We are both. We are not merely the sum of our definable parts. By reason, we know that our humanity gives us something in common with Jesus which raises our dignity beyond what we deserve and which demands that we “do whatever He tells us” to do and to be respectful and loving people to each other. But reason by itself leaves us empty.

At Spellman we seek to hear by reason but to see by faith in the God of mercy. We feel drawn back to Him day after day because our spirit comes from Him and that spirit longs to return. There is afterall, nothing so attractive as the Truth. We believe The “Hound of Heaven” is relent-less in His love and mercy for us and wants us to return to Him.

All life situations change. The only certainty in life is God. Reason will bring us only so far. We believe that when we allow the light of faith to guide our reason and we “Do whatever He tells us”, then we see more clearly, our burdens are made lighter and that powerful and peaceful miracles can happen in our lives and, just as the servants at marriage feast of Cana, we are still within the sound of His voice.

17tradition • Cardinal Spellman

On July 15th, Spellman lost one of its brightest stars, Janet Nick-ley Madigan (72). Most knew her as the nursing executive who worked long hours or the woman who helped out at Spellman during the play season, but I knew her as “mom”. My mother started getting involved in the musicals during her high school years at Spellman where she met her future husband, Patrick Madigan Jr. (Class of 73). Her connection to Spellman drama was reaffirmed when her sons, Patrick Madigan III (class of 04) and Evan Madigan, became involved in the plays. In recent years, during play time, you would find her cultivating the eager creative minds that graced the auditorium, instilling confidence, uplifting spirits, and comforting those who needed it.

A lot has been said about my mother’s character the last few months since her passing. She was an honest, outspoken, creative, charismatic, humble, generous, and com-passionate woman who knew nothing of cutting corners. People have come up to my family and told us of how my mother changed their lives; I can guarantee that she never knew this. That was the best thing about my mom, for all her brilliance and integrity she was the most humble person I’ve ever known. She had a grace about her that could not be matched; she lit up whatever room she entered. She could talk to you on any level and make you feel as if she was listening, because she was. She was the real deal.

My mother was, for a long time, the one person I would go to for ad-vice. She was the one who instilled my moral compass and made sure it was always pointing me in the right direction. Every time I came to her with a problem she would tell me to have “a five year plan”. I used to shake it off and think that I should set more immediate goals because I would manage better that way, I was wrong, Every time I would come back to her with the same problem, after trying to solve it my way, she would give me the same advice “have a five year plan” but this time it would come with a “you’re in for a rude awakening” speech. She was tough but it was always out of love and I knew the reason she was so tough was because she cared.

She always encouraged me to live up to my full potential and when things got tough she was the one person I would turn to when my spirits needed to be uplifted. She challenged me to make the best

version of myself the first time because we never get second chances in life. She really didn’t have a lot of patience and she always knew when to take advantage of an opportunity when it presented itself. The last “life conversation” I had with my mother was about continuing my education in nursing. The phrase “Why wait Patrick?” is what keeps ringing in my head.

My mother’s legacy is not necessarily what she did, but more so of how she did it. She took her time and made the absolute most of it. She touched more lives in her short lifetime than most could in two lifetimes. She was strong and confident while remaining humble. I was fortunate enough to be this extraordinary woman’s son. She was my greatest teacher and I never really got a chance to tell her that. Because of her I am more honest and hard working, more thoughtful and

generous and now more motivated than ever before to live up to my full potential.

I will miss my mother. I’ll miss her singing along to show tunes in the

car while driving down to the Cape. I’ll miss her sense of humor that challenged me to make better jokes to get her to laugh. I’ll miss the way she hugged her grandkids as if she were holding the whole world between her arms. I’ll miss the vibrant colors that she painted her world with her tenacity for life. Most of all, I’ll miss her honesty. She changed the life I live for the absolute better. If you want to be the change you wish to see in this world, a great template to model that after is the one designed by Janet Madigan.

iPad Update by Paul Kelley

Last year, we were among the risk-takers in schools who boldly took on the challenge of putting Ipads in the hands of every one of our students. People refer to us at Spellman as IPad pioneers, which is both exciting in the adventurous sense, but also daunting, with regard to tackling the unknown. I’m here to report that we have had our share of many successful discoveries and, admittedly, a few sobering reali-ties. All in all, the news is very good. The Ipad initiative is going very well and we are very much on track to further integrating the device as a means of improving and enhancing our curriculum and the overall learning experience.

Our teachers use their tablets in varying degrees, of course, depending on their subject area, their own skill level and the quality of useful apps in their par-ticular subject. Over 70 percent of our textbooks are either IBooks or Ebooks, which means that the material is literally at the students’ fingertips, allowing them to dig deeper into the built-in interac-tive components of the text, to highlight the information, to take notes and create study guides right from the textbook. Many of the teachers have learned to integrate the IPad into the simple logis-tics of the classroom, virtually removing the barrier of the screen between teacher and students. Because the tablets are so mobile, our teachers can literally carry their lessons plan around the classroom with them, move between discussion groups, project and manipulate in-formation from the tablet to the white board, toggle between streaming videos and projected images and solicit instantaneous feedback from the students with on the spot surveys or quizzes. In addition, many of our teachers have found apps which allow them to store and share their files with other professionals and with the students, to grade papers and provide written or typed feedback and ones that allow the students to annotate their own notes and power points for further understanding.

Every educator understands that in order to make a dramatic para-digm shift in instructional delivery, professional development for the teachers is critical. Here at Spellman, we are committed to providing our teachers as much quality support as possible to help them make the leap and master the effective use of the Ipad in the classroom. Last year, Cardinal Spellman was involved in a collaborative Professional

Development Program with Archbishop Williams HS and Sacred Heart HS (sponsored by a Catholic School Foundation grant), which provided our teachers with ongoing Ipad workshops, expert speakers, and invaluable subject-based collaboration and sharing of best practices. The grant collaboration will continue this year with an additional focus on working directly with our Catholic School feeder schools to help them better prepare their Middle School students for our high schools with advanced technology instruction.

One of our most exciting initiatives is the hiring of Linda St. Laurent, who is a gifted technology curriculum instructor. She will be working directly with and for our teachers, to assist them in find-ing new and improved ways to effec-tively integrate technology (particularly the IPad) into their daily curriculum. Her overall goal dove-tails perfectly with our all-school goal of enhancing the classroom experience by focusing on Student Engagement in the Classroom.

So, what’s next and what’s possible? It is clear that we are in the process of creating a 21st century school that is digitally state-of the art and philosophi-cally focused on becoming a network learning community. Our students are living in the information era, where they will have to become expert at accessing information and learn how to analyze

and synthesize it in a way that is relevantly useful. In short, they must become world-wide information seekers.

In the end, however, we all have to remember that all forms of technol-ogy are still just a tool for learning. I believe, more than ever, that the most effective learning takes place between the student, the teacher and the passion for the subject. Great teachers know how to make that con-nection. Great teachers have always had a bag of tricks that motivate, inspire and explain. Great teachers always realize they are preparing their students for the future… academically, ethically, socially and spiritually …. But our challenge is to make sure we are preparing them for their future, which will inevitably be one that will center around the effective use of technology. We’re happy to report…. here at Spellman, we are well on our way!

Our students are living in the

information era, where they

will have to become expert

at accessing information ...

they must become world-wide

information seekers.

Remembering Dr. McEwan“I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” —Etienne de Grellet

That quote appeared on a pewter plate in John McEwan’s classroom or office since he left Cardinal Spellman in 1978. The plate was a gift from his students who wanted to wish him well as he continued his career in education at Silver Lake High School.

John embodied the words of Etienne de Grellet. He lived every day to its fullest. He always had a goal in mind. He loved helping people and most importantly he loved helping kids. For Dr. John McEwan, it was always about the kids.

In May, when John passed away, Cardinal Spellman High School lost one of its biggest supporters. John loved Cardinal Spellman and every-thing that it stands for. Even in the end, as his health was failing him, he would call in from the hospital and do his best to continue serving in his role as president. He never stopped working for the students of Cardinal Spellman.

In an interview just a few weeks before his death, John McEwan of-fered some reflections on his life and his time at Cardinal Spellman.

“Spellman was very good to me when I attended high school,” John said. ”Financially it was a burden on my family and Spellman helped me with the tuition and books. I wouldn’t have been able to attend without financial assistance. They inspired me to want to do things to help other people. I wanted to give back everything that was given to me and pass that on somehow.”

“I was able to return to Cardinal Spellman as a teacher and begin my path in education. The Sisters of St. Joseph helped me a great deal and they taught me a lot even while I was teaching there. Spellman encour-aged me to get the most out of life and I wanted to give that back to any teachers, students, or parents I encountered. I wanted kids to feel the same way about Spellman as I did and I wanted them all to have the same opportunities I was afforded.”

Ultimately, John spent 41 years in education. He won several awards and was recognized with countless honors and achievements. He held many titles and served in many roles. He was a teacher, guidance counselor, department head, assistant principal, principal, headmaster, superintendent, and then finally a president. “It has been an honor to fill those roles over the last 41 years,” he said. “I always just tried to do what’s best for kids. Any decision I made, that was the first thing I considered.”

“Particularly in a Catholic school, it is so important to follow what you believe in and use that help to guide you in all your decision making.”

John served as a mentor to so many of his former pupils. He made himself available to anyone who sought his counsel and he always treated everyone fairly and with respect.

John McEwan gave his life to education, but he gave himself to his students.

He is truly missed.

Robert J. McEwanMr. McEwan could not imagine teaching anywhere else but Spellman

Robert J. McEwan knew at the age of 6 that he wanted to be a teacher. Little did he know at the time that not only would he be-come a teacher, he would become a legend. Mr. McEwan estab-lished Cardinal Spellman High School’s first drama department in 1965. He opened the school’s very first production of “The King and I” to a packed theater. He went on to teach generations of Spellman families, opening the curtain on a total of 47 musicals and 35 Spring Shows. Mr. McEwan directed The Crimson Chorus and managed The Annual Spring Show.

He remained the troupe sponsor of The International Thespian Society and worked in collabora-tion with Spellman to establish The Alumni Drama Society. Mr. McEwan’s reach went beyond the stage as an English teacher and Chair of the English Department for 47 years.

Mr. McEwan could not imagine teaching anywhere else but Spell-man. He thought of Spellman as his extended family and Christos Restaurant as his second office. He was adored by students for his wit, honesty and generosity. He loved the camaraderie and

excitement that every produc-tion would bring to the entire Spellman community. He held close to long standing traditions, which he would honor, no matter the situation. The top-secret an-nouncement of what production was to take place each year created anticipation and excitement and Mr. McEwan knew it. The hours of thought and creative genius he put into programming at Spell-man proved his theory to students that if anything was worth doing, it was worth doing well.

Mr. McEwan believed that students needed to be aware of their potential and strive for it. Together with dedicated accom-panist of 25 years, the late Kay Cassidy, and more recently, alongside Musical Director Dorrie Delano Bessette ’69, the late Janet Madigan ‘72, Suzanne Cassidy Neuman ‘87 and the

team inspired Spellman magic in students. To honor Mr. McE-wan’s tremendous dedication and achievements, Cardinal Spell-man High School established The Robert J. McEwan Drama Hall of Fame in 1996. Since its inception, the Hall of Fame has honored over 100 inductees for their involvement in the dramatic arts at Spellman.

Creedon Memorial Road Race

Paul “Bubba” McLaughlin, a member of the class of 1980, was best known during his years at Spellman for his humble acts of kindness. Paul fought a quiet and courageous battle with brain cancer for 13 years. Sadly, Paul passed away on December 13, 2010 at the age of 48. At that time, as a way of honoring Paul’s memory, his family and a close family friend established the Paul “Bubba” McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship at Cardinal Spellman High School funded by a memorial golf tournament in his honor.

Thank you to all who helped plan and attend the tournament. The 3rd Annual Paul “Bubba” McLaughlin Scholarship Golf Tournament was another huge success! Over $12,000 was raised to help students with tuition payments who would otherwise be unable to attend Spellman. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

The Mark Creedon Memorial Run and Walk, established in 2011, is a community event that promotes healthy living and family fun. It provides an opportunity to come together and joyously remem-ber our brother, son, nephew, cousin, uncle, friend, classmate and col-league, Mark Creedon (Class of 1995), on his birthday weekend.

The proceeds from the event supports a scholarship fund created in Mark’s name at Cardinal Spellman High School. Our goal is to offer a need-based, full scholarship to a deserving senior at Cardinal Spellman High School on an annual basis.

Even more than supporting the scholarship fund, the event offers us—as a family and community—an opportunity to remember Mark, talk about Mark, and celebrate Mark’s life while doing something that he loved to do – run in D.W. Field Park with his family and friends.

Save The Date! • Saturday, April 5, 2014 10AM • D.W. Field Park • Brockton, MA (Oak Street Entrance)

1962Karen Routh Kelley [email protected] have you been doing since September you ask? Well, first off I thought I would host a luncheon for the Rockland/Abington people. We had a great time at Mama Mia’s on the waterfront in Plymouth in April and had a good showing. Debbie Robbins, Elaine Belocas, Mary McCarron, Nancy Nihill, Kathy Bailey, Rosie Hebshie Rap-pold and myself came to renew some old friendships. Then I had a few people ask to have a “time” @ the Cape. So Debbie, Elaine and I went to Eddie and Ann Giardino’s for supper last October and planned a spring get together at Giardino’s restaurant. The date was set for June 28th. A really nice buffet of hors d’oeuvres and pizza, lasagna, chicken wings, meatballs and sau-sages were served. We really had a great time. Kevan Sullivan and wife Sandy, Patty Messaline Esterbrook and husband Alan, Kathy Bailey, Michelle Columbo Gain, Maureen Conroy, Elaine Belocus, Debbie Robbins, Mary McCarron, Dick Coughlin and his wife Joanne, Eddie Giardino and his wife Anne and myself were in attendance. Shelia Kiley Leary and Mary Alice Wells couldn’t come but wanted to. We were sorry they didn’t make it. Everyone was looking forward to seeing them. We closed the place at 11 PM. Email at [email protected] with any news. See you next time. KK

1963 50th Reunion Mary Ann Raynard Albert [email protected] Deslaurier Westerlund [email protected] Yezukevich [email protected] Susan Reilly is celebrating her Golden Jubilee as a Sister of St

Joseph. Congratulations and God bless. Heard from Steve Cas-siani: “We are escaping the heat of Houston by spending our summer in Park City, Utah. This will be our third summer here after I retired with over 40 years of service with Exxon Mobil. The big news for Carol and me is that our daughter Lisa was married in November and she and her husband are residing in Corona del Mar, California.” The “Big” reunion is on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Taunton Holiday Inn. Invites are in the mail. If you haven’t received one please contact the alumni office at [email protected] You can register online at www.spell-man.com under Events.

1964 Cheryl Mendosa Wong [email protected] Steptoe [email protected] have been living in Maryland since 1973, where my husband Mark and I raised our 3 daugh-ters. I retired from teaching in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 2008, and Mark retired from the federal government in Washington in 2010. We have kept busy with volunteer-ing in the community, taking classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning program at Towson University. We enjoy traveling, especially to visit our daughter and granddaughter in San Francisco. A recent travel highlight was a pilgrimage to Israel with a priest who taught us in the Osher program. We are also active in Stonehill alumni activities. We recently attended my 45th reunion at Stonehill where we reconnected with Spellman classmates Sheila

O’Heir-Coelho and Frank Hall. Sheila lives in Middleboro with her husband Ron, and teaches at Massasoit Community College. Sheila and Ron recently celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary by participating in a special Mass at the cathedral in Boston with their children and grandchildren. Frank is retired from Amtrak, and lives in Indianapolis, Indiana with his wife Lorraine. They enjoy caring for their grandchildren, visiting the ones in California and babysitting the ones closer to home. Frank maintains his lifelong interest in soccer. I was also able to visit Spell-man with my friend and classmate from West Bridgewater, Paula Steptoe. We had a wonderful tour of the school and all the updates. We were also able to reconnect with classmate Helen Bassett Pacewicz, who is still teaching at Spellman. What a great trip! Next year is our 50th reunion. No time like the present to start planning. We are asking for help to form a com-mittee and to solicit ideas. Some suggestions would be: should it be a dinner gathering, whether it should be formal or casual; desired location for a get-together: at school, at a function venue, at someone’s home, should it be a weekend of celebrat-ing with dinner and a morning brunch? Please let us know if you are interested in being on the committee or have any ideas or suggestions.

1965Suzanne Carr O’Donnell [email protected] just returned from a fun two night « sleep over » at Joannie Doyle’s in New Silver Beach. News about the attendees… Joan has just retired from the Plymouth schools where she taught special needs. Her joy in her situation emanates from every pore. She is constantly doing the happy dance. Rita Gallant is still working her real estate business

and sold two houses while she was with us! Debbie Carr Journal-ist is living at Willow Bend ion Mashpee, playing golf and enjoying her grandchildren. Retired but not retired, Jean Derito Bessette is helping out at her husband, Paul’s company. They recently bought a building ..such entrepreneurs! You go ! Just returning from trips to Arizona and Washington, DC, Patty Moore Spivey is now toiling away at City Hall in Brockton. Patrice Murphy Sweeney stopped in. She and Philip moved into a wonderful upside down home within waling distance to Joannie’s. It is like a tree house ! They are leaving in October for one month in St. John – sounds great ! Joe Mahoney will be visiting them. We saw John Ennis at Joan’s and heard he and Liz are spending February at Heritage Bay in Naples, Florida. We hear Dennis and Linda Gagne are there too ! We were all shocked to realize our reunion is two years away ! Anyone interested in help-ing call (508-584-3004) or email ([email protected]) Jane Deslaurier Westerlund at the Ad-vancement Office. Let’s get started ! Bob and Andy Foley provide my husband and I with bed and board while traveling to and from Florida. So hospitable. Anyone need a room ? Peggy Shea is recovering from back surgery and doing great! She lives next door to Rita who pops in on her now and then. Pat Sullivan Paglierani has retired from St. Joseph School in Holbrook and is busy carting her nine grandchildren to every museum on the East coast ! another Naples, Florida girl, Ann Graham Donovan recently had two grandkids.. . beautiful little girls and both live within walking distance. are so sorry to lose Artie E. Sullivan (retired police officer). He was always loyal to his class ! Attend-ing the golf tournaments, reunions, and just keeping in touch ! He will be missed as will Eddie Kelly. Ed was such a happy guy and fun to be around. We are also saddened to learn that Carol (Green) and Dick Cole lost their daughter, Alice. We send our prayers Our condolenses go out to Michael Roberts and his family on the death of his brother, William (Biff ) ’63. As I peruse our yearbook trying to jog my memory for news of our classmates, I notice the people we have lost and I am reminded how fleeting life is. Let’s not let anymore time pass – let us hear from you ! Let’s keep the connection !

1966 Maryellen Mather [email protected] note from John Gorman: I live in Phoenix, Arizona. If anyone wants to get out of the cold, they can get in touch with me at [email protected]. I would love to catch up. John”.

1967 Tom Frizzell [email protected] (Buckley) Cottle retired in 2005 after 34 years teaching in the Stoughton Public School Sys-tem. She currently lives on Cape Cod. Our sympathies go out to Tom Frizzell and his family on the passing of his dad.

1969 Joan Iacovone Kenney [email protected] Hassett Martin [email protected] McLaughlin Osborne [email protected] this note finds all of our classmates and their families well. It is that time of year to be thinking of planning our 45th Reunion. It doesn’t seem possible that we will be celebrating number 45. We will have a reunion committee meeting this fall at the end of October. We would love to have all of you who are interested in planning for this event come to this meeting. Please email Joan, Suzanne, or Gerry if you would like to be involved or share your ideas. We welcome all ideas!!! We will be notifying those who want to come to the meeting with the specifics including time and place of the reunion meeting by email, so please make sure that we have your updated email and telephone number. We wish Happy Retirement to Jimmy Henderson, Gerry McLaughlin Osborne, and Mary Ellen Clark Doherty. We wish you all much happiness in your retirement for jobs well done.It was nice to see one of our class-mates, Karen McCarthy Munkley, on the front page of the Boston Globe. She was participating in an outdoor yoga class on the North and South River. Karen looked fit and relaxed as she practiced her yoga positions. We should all fol-low her good example for a healthy lifestyle.A good time was had at the Shaw’s Center/Rox for all friends and

family at the kick off summer party hosted by our own Senator Tommy Kennedy. Many Spellman alums were spotted having loads of laughs and a heck of a good time! Kevin Good became the proud Grandpa of a set of twins this past spring. One boy and one girl guarantees double trouble for him. Phil Greene and his wife came back for a fabulous cruise. Phil has taken so many cruises that he wears a per-manent flotation device around his neck. It looks good on you, Phil. Sadly, Bobby O’Nei passed away this past summer. We send our love and condolences to his family. Our condolences go out to our friends, Rusty Frizzell, on the death of his father and Ellen Levangie Amantea on the death of her mom. Finally, the “Class of 69” sends out our con-gratulations to Kathy Smith, Class of 1973, who was recently named Superintendent of the Brockton School System--another proud accomplishment of a Spellman Graduate. We hope to see many of you at the reunion meeting in October!

1973 40th ReunionKathy Alward Smith [email protected] Conley Cirillo [email protected] 40th anniversary class of ’73! Can you believe it has been that long? It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating our graduation. What a class we had! Hats off to the ladies breaking bar-riers: Susanne Bump being hon-ored at the Gala as the first female auditor elected in Massachusetts. Congratulations and best wishes to our classmate, Kathleen Alward Smith. She has been named as the first female school superintendent of the Brockton schools. Kathy has worked in the Brockton Schools for 36 years. In June, Kathy received the 2013 Athena Award, presented by the Metro South Chamber of Commerce. This award honors those who demonstrate excellence in their profession, provide valuable services to the community and actively assist women in realizing their leadership potential. Best of luck, Kathy, on your new path. Nice job ladies! Let’s not leave out the guys. Kudos to John Kearney for coaching the Bridgewater/Raynham baseball team to their first state championship and John being recognized as coach of the year by the Boston Globe. (Thanks Andy Clancy for the news) Andrew Clancy sent along a note: “It has been 40 year since we were finish-ing finals and planning to go to Duxbury Beach. the pleasure of seeing him at my daughter Allyson’s graduation from Boston University. Also, while in Baltimore my son Drew played Ice Hockey with Matt Bailey, son of Jim Bailey. I hope all is well with our class and look forward to another 40 years!” Congratulations also to you Andy, on celebrating your 30th wedding anniversary with Marianne. Her first experience with Spellman was at one of our re-unions where she sat next to Father McConnell the whole evening! She’s a keeper! Our condolences to Tom Gorman and his family on the loss of his brother, Paul. We were also saddened to hear of the passing of Janet Nickley Madigan, wife of Pat Madigan. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. No plans yet for a reunion. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas please let us know.

1974 Joanne Hanson [email protected] HartIt was good to play with Tom Clark and Bill Crane at the Spellman golf tourney again in June. We were joined by our “old” (not really) JV basketball coach Dan Ryan. Dan’s dong great and asking for all his former JV guys like Joe Kenney, Jed Corcoran, Bob Goodhue, Neal McNally. It’s amazing how those “glory years” of sitting on the JV bench and watching Eddie Yourk, Charlie Simonds, George Crane, Mark Chappelle (all ‘73’s) and Mark Spillane, Tom Clark, Mark Murphy, Bob Swanton, Marty Moore, (all 74’s) (sorry if I missed some guys) take on the Catholic Conference powerhouses back in ‘72 and ‘73. Eddie’s heroics in the triple OT game in the tourney at Brockton High will never be for-gotten by any of us. The Catholic Conference was full of future Divi-sion I and II college players in those days and every night was a treat

to see the likes of King Gaskins (CM), Bob Carrington (Archies), Billy Collins (Bosco) and more do their thing on the court. Dan stood in for Tom Heffernan who’s pretty busy as an Emergency Room doc in New Hampshire. Bob Ledwell is a new dad and Bob Swanton is going strong in Pembroke with his lovely wife Nancy (my BC ’78 classmate). 40th reunion coming up next year!!! How’s that possible!!

1975Eileen Murphy Krouse [email protected] sent out a communication to my Spellman friends on Facebook and here are the responses. Denise Cloutier Souliere: Hi After 33 years at State Street Consultants Inc. we closed the company at the end of 2012. After a brief job search I was very fortunate to find a job at In-foTrends as their Database Research Product ManagerGail Magliozzi: I am single and raising three adopted children from Guatemala. They are now 9, 10, and 11! God help me! Living and working for myself on Cape Cod. I am an interior designer and call myself “The Kitchen Lady! Helen Gordon: Having young kids keep us young. My twin boys are 10. I still work full time. Up until this year I was on the board of directors of my company Woodard & Curran. We are an engineering and opera-tions company now 700 people. I am one of the stockholders on the company still love working with municipal clients on their infra-structure challenges when I am not at the soccer field, frogging at the local brook or building Legos. Sally Carr McAllister: Well y’all can pretty much see what I’ve been up to if you keep active on Facebook but for those who haven’t.... I am currently single and living in Attle-boro. My three kids are off on their own, in relationships or married and thankfully successful so I get

to spend all my hard earned money on myself and my future! I am working as a clinical training analyst for CVS minute clinics to pay the bills and acting to feed the soul. You can see me frequently in the commercials for Twin Rivers Casino and Jacky’s Waterplace as well as various regional theaters. Most re-cently I had the opportunity to play Cinderellas stepmother in Milford’s production of Into the Woods. I enjoy traveling and am looking forward to my second trip with Ru Paul’s Drag Stars at Sea Cruise this coming fall where I intend to get make-up tips and sing show tunes with the girls til dawn! Life is too short not to enjoy it. I think that’s a quote from Dolly Levi.... Jay Dolan: I started full time in January 2013 as a CRM Specialist at UMass - Lowell. I work in the Admissions office. I’m still living in Lowell Massachusetts and this January I’ll be married 30 yrs. Of my 3 children, the oldest is married, my middle is on his own and my youngest is a sophomore at UMass - Lowell. Just wanted to fill in the important stuff! Mary Ann Pilalas Buote: I am still living in Brockton with my adult daughter (27). Have been in nursing (RN) since 1979, and am currently working for MassHealth, Office of Clinical Affairs in the Utilization Management Program. Love to vacation on Sanibel Island, Florida but had to bypass this year due to rotator cuff surgery April 1st.....worst thing I have EVER been through!! I have 2 pugs that I call my furbabies....it’s like having eternal toddlers LoL. Maryanne Flaherty Frenette: Still living in Brockton, have been married 36 years in August and have 6 beautiful grandchildren. I retired from Hair-dressing and Early Ed.... Judy Dea-ton: I am living in Stoughton in the house I was born and raised in and my 30 year old daughter is on the second floor so it’s nice to be close to her. I work for EOMS Recycling as the bookkeeper. I have been there

seven years. I also work part time for Mansfield Auto also as a bookkeep-er and I sell Pampered Chef on the side. If anyone would like to either have a show or buy something just let me know. So as you can see I keep pretty busy. I also have two cats they are brothers Winston & Wally. Now that you have gotten all of us to spill our guts what have you been up to? I think it’s only fair that you dish some dirt too. Oh I forgot the fun stuff. I went on a Disney cruise in February. My sister won a cruise at work so she asked me to go with her and her husband. So while you were all BURIED during the blizzard I was at Disney taking pictures of Mickey & Minnie. I had a BLAST! I can’t wait to go again. Diane De Costa: I am single and living in Brockton. I was recently the Clinical Director of a local Hospice and currently am a Hospice Liaison with many of the Boston Hospitals. I have been on medical missions to Albania and since the earthquake in Haiti, I try to return yearly to work in Medical Clinics and Orphanages. I had a wonderful fun trip to Ireland which I would return to in a heartbeat! Sadly my sister passed away suddenly, Eliza-beth DeCosta-Sloan. This is great way to keep in communicaton....Diane DeCosta. Patty Charleston Sullivan: What a great way to catch up on what everyone is up to. I’ve been married to Paul for over 35 yrs. He works for LL Bean and takes care of our rental properties. We have a home on the water in Maine but I’m working school months in Katy Texas. Crazy but that’s what the downturn in the economy did for us. My job in Maine went away in 2010 and I ended up finding my dream job a little far away. We travel back and forth every couple months currently. Not ideal but it works for now. I’m working as an educator/administrator for the Katy school district and lead the Assistive Technology Team for the district. Paul and I have 2 children.

Never underestimate the power of one. When kindness and compassion are shown, it inspires kindness and compassion in others. This is how Joey Glynn, Class of 2012, lived his life. The energy of Joey’s kind words and good deeds has created an undeniable effect on the entire Spellman community, gently shaping the lives of others.

Joey had an uncanny knack of being able to make ordinary circumstances extraordinary because, Joey, himself, was an extraordinary in-dividual. Of course, Joey was known as the all-star athlete who played at both Gillette and the Garden. He was also a two-time Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic Athlete, Enterprise Player of the Year, and a member of the ESPN Boston’s All-State team. As captain of the basketball team, Joey finished with an incredible 1,425 points at Spellman. Joey was also a beloved Captain of the Spellman Foot-ball team, scoring the only touchdown in the 2011 Superbowl. He also lettered in baseball at Spellman. Joey had a promising and bright future at Bentley University.

There was more to Joey than just sports. Not only was Joey an outstanding athlete, he rose

above all labels as an outstanding student with a 4.0 GPA average and he was even elected Prom King. He excelled in everything he did and did it with quiet grace and humility. Joey lived his faith as a peer minister and member of The God Squad. Whenever there was a biblical reenactment Deacon would ask the students who should play Jesus and they always said, “Of course, Joey should play Jesus.” Joey was also a Eucharistic Minister. When his classmates and teammates heard that Joey was regularly attending the Tuesday Night Adoration at The Holy Ghost Church in Whitman, they gath-ered to join him. Joey had that kind of effect on others. Everyone wanted to be where Joey was.

Athletics and academics aside, at the end of the day, first and foremost, Joey belonged to his family. Joey never left the house without kissing his mom goodbye, and telling her that he loved her. He was always there for his dad, whether it was to get up early to play golf or help with a home project. Joey’s family was always very supportive of his accomplish-ments. They never missed a game, in fact, with so many sisters and aunts and uncles in attendance, Joey’s games were always a family affair. Joey’s Aunt Mary went to every Bentley game this past year, which is a testament to the relationship Joey had with her. His thoughtful-ness and caring personality helped him create special bonds with all family members. Joey was a loving younger brother to sisters, Kelly (04), Sarah (06) and Stephanie (09) and ador-ing big brother to sister, Ashley (17). Joey’s sisters and friends have shared that he would always put others first and would go above and beyond to help. If someone was having a bad day, he might bring them a cup of coffee or offer a ride home from school. He was a friend to all students and an excellent role model for all. Even Joey’s toughest athletic competitor’s looked up to him. Joey left a good impression

on everyone he met. He was just that kind of person, one you can never forget.

Like a great ripple in a still pond, as an out-standing young man from Spellman, his life continues to have far reach and inspires all who knew him. Joey’s legacy of goodness lives on and his essence remains at Spellman. We hear it in our classrooms, we see it on the court and we feel it in our hearts. Until we meet again, may God keep you under his wing.

God bless you, Joey, and God bless the entire Glynn family.

Joey Glynn the power of one

Thank You .Driving home from the hospital on that terrible night in early June, we noticed that people had started to gather in front of our house . Our first thought was “Please just leave us alone!” As we grieved as a family throughout that night we no-ticed that some cars with people in them never left . In fact, some of Joey’s Spellman friends had stayed in their cars in front of our house all night . At first light we could see many more cars driving up and more Spellman students began congregating . The students had decided to meet at our house before going to the prayer service that was held that morning for Joey . What we didn’t realize until later was that this was the Spellman support system beginning to energize and engage .

Since that night, we as a family have been trying to cope with this devastating and overwhelming loss . But, also since that night, we also experienced something that was overwhelming in a positive way . The Spellman support community, Joey’s friends, parents, teachers, administrators, and students we did not even know have reached out to us to help us in this grieving process . We are forever grateful and extremely proud to be a Spellman family .

Thank you so much, Spellman community, for your repeated kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity, and for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers,

The Glynn Family

One of the most outstanding athletes to ever walk the halls of Cardinal Spellman High School was Joey Glynn. He was an exceptionally

good basketball player, football player, baseball player and student whose achievements were rivaled only by his magnanimous spirit

and genuine sense of caring for others. Joey accomplished so much in a short time at Cardinal Spellman and his friends, family and
