Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

November 24, 2019 FOCUS: Today we celebrate Jesus, preeminent over all creation yet always bestowing his love and forgiveness. Jesus, the image of the invisible God, is preeminent over all creation and head of the Church. On this solemnity, we recognize that Jesus Christ is King but we also know that our loving Savior shows us compassion and mercy, as he showed to the good thief. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, the tribes of Israel anoint David, their shepherd, as king. In the reading from Colossians, Paul writes of the incredible glory of Jesus, firstborn of all creation, head of the Church, and preeminent over all creation. In the Gospel, Jesus shows his compassion and mercy by assuring the good thief of his entrance into his kingdom. REFLECTION: "Location, location, location" – the gos-pel shows us that all through his life and right up to his death, Christ has taken a place with the suffering, poor, sick, the defeated and the outcast who cry out to God. Christ is "the image of the invisible God," and has shown that his rule is from our location – from the midst of us. So we ask ourselves:

Where in the midst of the world do you discover Christ?

How have you responded to Christ the King in that place?

A Minute In the Church (by Gus Lloyd)

Apostolic Succession In the Creed, we profess belief in the One, Holy, Catho-lic and Apostolic Church. Let’s talk about that notion of an Apostolic Church. For many, one of the strongest arguments for Catholi-cism is Apostolic Succession. Isn’t it amazing to think that every Catholic priest could trace his ministerial lineage back to one of the Apostles? You see, every priest was ordained by a bishop, who was ordained by a bishop and so on in an unbroken line back to one of the Twelve. We see Apostolic Succession clearly in Acts 1:15-26. After the death of Judas, the remaining Apostles knew that the office given to Judas by Christ had to be filled. So Matthias was chosen to succeed Judas. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 862 says this: “Just as the office which the Lord confided to Peter alone, as first of the apostles, destined to be transmitted to his successors, is a permanent one, so also endure the office, which the apostles received, of shepherding the Church, a charge destined to be exer-cised without interruption by the sacred order of bish-ops. Hence the Church teaches that the bishops have by divine institution taken the place of the apostles as pastors of the Church, in such wise that whoever lis-tens to them is listening to Christ and whoever despis-es them despises Christ and him who sent Christ.”
