Parishioners and friends are invited to an evening of

exploration and conversation about the recent research

into

The Christmas Stories

30 Bayles Street Parkville

Tuesday 28th November 7:30pm

Christmas drinks to follow

Thirty years ago, Raymond Brown published ground

breaking research into the infancy narratives – the

Christmas Stories.

Now a Melbourne scripture scholar Mary Coloe has just

published “a Friendly Guide to The Birth of Jesus”

We now appreciate those stories are not to be taken as

historical accounts but they convey the hope and blessing

of the Jesus of Nazareth coming amongst us.

Christmas masses do not lend themselves to exploring

these scriptural riches in any extensive way.

Due to space constraints 30 participants will be suitable.

Please email bookings to

Fr. Elligate [email protected]

PUBLIC LECTURE

Trading the Word: Gutenberg Bibles and English Libraries

by Shane Carmody

In this lecture Shane Carmody will tell the stories of the seven Gutenberg Bibles in English Libraries and some that got away. The first book printed with moveable type in Europe, Gutenberg’s bible was a major turning point from the medieval to the modern world, and brought a technology that spread knowledge, controversy, and ultimately revolution. The stories of these bibles reflect this cultural shift as well as the rise of book collecting and the trade which supports it.

Shane Carmody is the Senior Development Manager, Advancement Office, The University of Melbourne

Monday 20th November 2017 5.00pm – 6.00pm Venue The Oratory, Newman College, University of Melbourne 887 Swanston Street, Parkville (Melways Map 2B E5)
