My Dear Parishioners,
Today is an historic moment in the his-
tory of the United States, and the Catholic
Church here in the Philadelphia area. This
weekend, our Holy Father Pope Francis
visited many prominent places in Philadel-
phia, and many of our fellow Catholics.
In the early Church, whenever the Apos-
tle Peter visited a local Christian community, it was a great mo-
ment for those people, because they knew that Peter had been
chosen to be Christ's Vicar here on earth. That is what makes
Pope Francis' visit to Philly so special, because he is the 266th
successor to Saint Peter.
I remember when Saint John Paul II visited Philadelphia
in 1978. I was stationed in South Philly, and he drove right
through our parish. After he passed by, I got on a subway and
made it up to Logan Circle for his Mass before 1 million peo-
ple. What I will always remember is the festive atmosphere of
joy, fellowship and love that permeated the city that night, as
the million people walked back to their buses and trains to go
home. They went away with a renewed faith in God and a deep
respect for one another. I hope and expect that the same bless-
ings will come upon us with Pope Francis' visit.
Next Sunday, we begin our annual celebration of Forty
Hours. It is a special time when our attention is rightfully
placed on the wonderful gift of His Real Presence, which
Jesus left us at the Last Supper, when He Instituted the Most
Holy Eucharist. I encourage you to make time to come for a
visit in church during those days (since the Adoration Chapel
will be closed during Forty Hours.) Let's allow the spirit of the
Holy Father's visit to linger with us by participating, especially
in the solemn candlelight outdoor procession on Tuesday
evening, Oct. 6
Finally, I am pleased to announce that our new Saint Fran-
cis Center will be officially dedicated and blessed on Sunday
Oct. 4, the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, after the 11 a.m.
Mass that day. The building will be open for your inspection the
entire morning.
May God bless you,
St. Bede 103 September 27, 2015

Scripture Readings Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 4, 2015
Genesis 2:18–24
Psalm 128
Hebrews 2:9–11
Mark 10:2–16 or 10:2–12 The scripture passages from Genesis and the Gospel of
Mark reveal images of faithful love between spouses. The
Gospel goes farther, including children in the equation. Lis-
tening to these readings, let us be mindful of those whose
marriages are a source of anguish, as well as families whose
children are not cared for and respected as they deserve. Let
us open ourselves to the power of God’s living word to trans-
form us all into faith-filled witnesses to God’s great works in
all our human relationships.

50th Anniversary
Commemorative Book Now that our 50th Anniversary year is over,
with all of its successful and joyous monthly
celebrations, we come to the last and perhaps
greatest task: compiling a commemorative
book that will help us to recall these memories
for years to come. It will also share the interest-
ing history that has shaped us into the vibrant
community of faith that we are.
A committee of parishioners is compiling,
writing and editing what will be a 50th Anni-
versary, limited edition, keepsake book. The
committee envisions a book worthy of display
in your home, on the coffee table, or as the per-
fect Christmas gift.
The book will contain over 100 pages of his-
tory, stories, pictures and personal testimonials
from former priests, religious, etc., that will
help us to cherish and preserve the memories of
50 years for generations to come. The book will
be available for purchase in mid-November,
2015, if not sooner.
The anniversary committee would like to
invite as many parishioners as possible to be a
part of this historical record. A special section
of the book will contain a listing of the names
of book patrons, living and deceased. A dona-
tion of $30 for a single line listing in this sec-
tion will also entitle the donor to a free copy.
Below you will find a sample form to assist
you in making a listing in this special section.
We ask that you complete the form and attach it
to your donation, and drop it off at the Rectory
as soon as possible.

Perpetual adoration is continuous prayer in the presence of Jesus
in the tabernacle or monstrance. Successive adorers undertake to
make a weekly holy hour of prayer once a week and these holy hours
continue day and night without ceasing.
Those who spend a regular weekly Holy Hour in the Eucharistic
presence of Jesus find that this hour each week has changed their lives.
They develop an intimate friendship with Our Lord. They share their
lives with Him, but He too shares His Divine Life with them. Their
problems do not evaporate, but they are given an added strength to
cope with them and to unite their crosses with the Cross of Christ. Please stop by and visit Jesus in our chapel adjacent to the parish
offices in the St. Katharine Drexel Center.
For more information & to sign up for an hour please contact Deb-
bie & Sean McDermott (215) 504-9897 or email us at

Carole Obrokta Director of Religious Education
(Office: 215-357-2130)
Dear Parishioners,
St. Bede's parish and school Confirma-
tion candidates are beginning their prepara-
tion for this important sacrament to be admin-
istered by the Most Reverend John J. McIn-
tyre on (Saturday) March 19, 2016.
You might be asked to be a sponsor for
Confirmation.
A sponsor for Confirmation is a public role in the Church.
Confirmation candidates and their parents need to reflect on
whether the person they are considering meets the require-
ments. Family members sometimes feel compelled to ask
someone because of tradition or other obligations, unaware that
the proposed sponsor no longer practices the Catholic faith.
Remember, the issue here for a person who is taking a public
role in the Church is not simply whether the sponsor is a good-
living person with high values. That is presumed. No, it is
much more. Does the sponsor you are considering practice the
Catholic faith in accordance with these basic requirements:
√ At least 16 years of age and fully initiated in the Catholic
Church, having received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy
Communion and Confirmation.
√ Attends Mass regularly on Sundays and Holy Days of
Obligation.
√ Sincerely strives to follow the moral teachings of the
Catholic Church.
√ Was married in the Catholic Church (or with appropriate
dispensation). If single, is living a chaste life and not cohabi-
tating with another person.
In the event that the person chosen to be a sponsor does not
fulfill these requirements, this can be a "graced moment," invit-
ing a family member or friend to turn again to Jesus Christ
through the Catholic Church.
We will present the Confirmation candidates to our parish
community during the 11:00 a.m. Mass - Sunday - November
1, 2015.
Confirmation candidates and their parents are now choosing
between (Sunday) - October 11, 2015 (1:45 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.) or
(Tuesday) - October 13, 2015 (5:45 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.) for the
required Confirmation Seminar. Let us keep these candidates
in our prayers.
God Bless,
Ms. Carole Obrokta
