Parish Mission Statement

St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition estab-lished in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as ex-amples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds. We invite you to join us in celebration of God’s holy sacra-ments, to serve His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, and to spread His Gospel, the Word of Jesus Christ.

Pray for the Sick

Pray for the sick of our parish, our family and friends, especially Elizabeth McKeever, Carson Hancock, Elaine Fields, Joan Crum, David Chabala, Geoff Skundrich, Karen Recrosio, Margaret Vallelunga, Gloria Fortunato, Edna Koczaja, John Pulford, Mary Rosato, Ann Mary Mazzocco, Lois Rosati, Kathy D’Amico, Sophie Kramzer, Catherine Petrich, Maureen Wirant, and those in nursing homes and their caregiv-ers; the return of inactive members of our par-ish to the practice of their faith; the respect of all human life and the end of abortions. We pray for the safety of our troops, their safe re-turn and for their families at home.

Call the rectory office if you are homebound or in a nursing home and would like to receive Communion or if you are a patient in a hospital and would like a visit from a priest, please call 412.221.5152.

BALANCE Today’s scriptures emphasize the fundamen-tal link between love of God and love of our neigh-bors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn’t always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more orient-ed toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are op-pressed. Today Jesus reminds us of the necessity for both in the life of faith. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — You shall not oppress an alien, for you yourselves were once aliens in Egypt (Exodus 22:20-26). Psalm — I love you, Lord, my strength (Psalm 18). Second Reading — You became imitators of the Lord, so that you became a model for all believers (1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10). Gospel — You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and you shall love your neighbor as your-self (Matthew 22:34-40). SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time; Priesthood Sunday; World Youth Day Tuesday: Halloween Wednesday: All Saints Thursday: The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day) Friday: St. Martin de Porres; First Friday Saturday: St. Charles Borromeo; First Saturday

The Greatest Commandment – In today’s Gospel Jesus makes his command of love succinct: Love God with all your heart, mind and soul and love your neighbor as yourself. While succinct, this command is not always simple. Sure, it may not be hard for many to not kill and to keep holy the Sabbath, but how about getting frustrated with God or others, or fulfilling our needs before what God or others expect of us. It can be hard to set aside our desires or what’s convenient for us, yet we must be willing to do what honors God and builds up our sisters and brothers, no matter the personal cost involved. As On Mission for The Church Alive! unfolds our normal time or place of wor-shipping God may change and be less convenient, and that will be hard for us. That doesn’t mean, however, that we give up on God or neglect our family of faith. On Mis-sion seeks to make our worship of God more vibrant and our opportunities to build up the Body of Christ more effec-tive. Prepare now for the changes ahead so that you can be ready to participate in the life of the Church in new and exciting ways. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
