Dear Friends,
I pray that you enjoyed the absolutely beautiful fall days that have blessed us this past week. I was
so grateful to get out to run in the sunshine, as I know that shortly, I will be getting wet more often
as I head out. The sunshine was also a great blessing during this time when the daylight is short. I
found it a great boost in the midst of our situation.
I want to update you on the progress of the process of my review as your pastor, coming to the end
of my sixyear term. I received the data and comments that were submitted and was able to discuss
them with Patrick Sharkey (who worked with us on our Pastoral Plan). I am grateful to all of you
who participated in the survey and gave feedback. I benefitted greatly from your feedback as it
helps me to see myself more in the light of how others see me and to grow in humility. Receiving
the feedback that was critical and recognizing where I am weak is an invitation to rely on God’s
help and strength so that I can be more attentive in those areas. I am so blessed to be a priest and to
be your pastor. I thank God for this opportunity and pray He will help me to continue to grow with
His grace. Patrick will now send the summary of our meeting to the Priest Personnel Board and we
will see what God has in store for us in the Spring. Usually, there is an announcement about
changes in assignments at the beginning of May. If there is any update sooner than that, we will let
you know.
This Sunday, we hear the Voice crying out in the desert, “Prepare the way of the Lord!” The
Voice is John the Baptist, preparing the way for the Word who is Christ. Jesus’ cousin has been
led out into the desert and God prepared him to be the last of the prophets, the hinge between the
Old and the New Testament. He is the one of whom Isaiah spoke and all the people from Jerusa-
lem and the surrounding area went out to hear him. St. Andrew and St. John were two of those
who became His disciples. As they were standing by one day, learning from the Baptist, they
heard him say, “Behold the Lamb of God.” Immediately they left the Voice to follow the Word,
the Lamb of God, to abide with Him.
Our hearts are longing to hear the Word, to abide with/in Him. There are a lot of different voices
trying to distract us from hearing the Word. I pray that the Voice of John the Baptist will rouse in
us the desire to know the Word made flesh as it did for Sts. Andrew and John. Advent is a great
time get out into the desert, experience some silence, so that we might respond to the invitation to
draw near, listen to, abide with our Savior, Emmanuel.
In His Most Sacred Heart,

Morning Glory Consecration Prayer
I, _____________, a repentant
sinner, renew and ratify today in your
hands, O Immaculate Mother, the
vows of my Baptism. I renounce
Satan and resolve to follow Jesus
Christ even more closely than before.
Mary, I give you my heart. Please
set it on fire with love for Jesus.
Make it always attentive to His
burning thirst for love and for souls.
Keep my heart in your most pure
Heart that I may love Jesus and the
members of His Body with your own
perfect love.
Mary, I entrust myself totally to you: my body and
soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the
value of all my good actions. Please make of me, of all
that I am and have, whatever most pleases you. Let me be
a fit instrument in your immaculate and merciful hands
for bringing the greatest possible glory to God. If I fall,
please lead me back to Jesus. Wash me in the blood and
water that flow from His pierced side, and help me never
to loose my trust in this fountain of love and mercy.
With you, O Immaculate Mother—you who always do
the will of God—I unite myself to the perfect
consecration of Jesus as He offers Himself in the Spirit to
the Father for the life of the world.
Amen

Stewardship Talk 11/14/2020
Steve & Jane Wraith

STEVE: My name is Steve Wraith. With me is my wife, Jane. We would like to share with you the
story of our faith journey and our commitment to stewardship here at St Anthony.

Our story begins when we married 36 years ago. While Jane and I share many things in common, our
religious backgrounds growing up were different. Jane was baptized and raised as a Catholic. My fam-
ily was Lutheran.

As a teenager and then into my college years, I grew away from religion. Unlike Jane, faith was not a
priority for me in the early years of our marriage. As a result, we did not attend Mass regularly nor
were we fully committed to sacrificial giving. Upon reflection, I realized I was holding us back as a
family from being fully committed to the church.

This changed when I decided to go through the RCIA process 26 years ago. As a nonCatholic and
unable to receive communion, something was always missing when I attended Mass. We also be-
lieved it was important to pass our faith to our children who were baptized at St. Anthony. Upon my
confirmation as a Catholic, we started attending Mass every week. We also committed ourselves to
giving more to St. Anthony in time and treasure. Becoming a Catholic was truly life changing for me.

JANE: I am Jane, and I am a cradle Catholic. My family went to Mass every Sunday, even if we
were away on vacation or even on a ski slope! We went to confession every month, attended Catholic
school, youth groups, and summer camps. When I met Steve, a Renton boy, he was not a Catholic, but
we were married in my home parish, St. Charles Borromeo in Tacoma, and later moved here to his
hometown, where we chose St. Anthony as our parish.

Despite the good example set by my parents, my practice of faith as a young adult was hit and miss. In
our early years of marriage, Steve often went to Mass with me, but after our two children were born,
Sundays were more of a challenge. We ended up making a lot of excuses and sometimes missed Mass
for weeks at a time. I had stopped going to Confession years before, convinced that all I had to do was
talk to God and that my sins would be forgiven. Even so, I can remember saying my prayers silently
before going to sleep at night, and having an ongoing sense that God was inviting me to come closer,
to become significantly involved in our Parish, but I had no idea how to even begin. God kept inviting
me, but it took me a long time to respond. He was very kind and very patient.

When Steve decided on his own to become a Catholic, he did the greatest thing anyone could ever
have done for me. He started going to RCIA, and after being received into the Church, he surprised
me by making a statement like this: “We are not going to make excuses about going to Mass. We are
going every week, and we are going at 9:00.” Although I would have preferred a later Mass, I knew
this was just what our family needed. Also, it seemed to me that God had been working on him a bit.
While we are not always perfect, our family practice of faith has stabilized us, and has become a guide
and an anchor to our life. More than anything, we hoped to pass this faith on to our children.

Stewardship Talk 11/14/2020
Steve & Jane Wraith

Continuation...

STEVE: Initially, the key to stewardship for us was just to get started. We began by turning in a
pledge card. In doing so, we committed ourselves to giving on a regular basis. We now prefer giving
through electronic funds transfer, which is easier and also ensures that the Parish receives our dona-
tion when we are out of town and unable to attend Mass here. This has been especially important this
year with the coronavirus restrictions on Mass attendance. Each year, we have tried to increase our
financial commitment to the Parish over the prior year.

Along with our financial commitment, I also experienced the call to give my time to the Parish. When
our kids were attending St. Anthony School, it was important to me to be involved in their activities
and volunteer my time, which included serving on the School Commission, coaching CYO basketball,
and being a Cub Scout leader. By volunteering, I was not only giving my time to the Parish but also
provided me with more time with my children and to be a good role model.

In preCOVID times, I served as a Eucharistic minister and have served for the past 4 years on the
Parish Finance Council. This has given me a unique perspective into the Parish’s finances and what is
needed for the Parish to operate. Sacrificial giving by parishioners is the lifeblood of the Parish’s op-
erations. St. Anthony does not receive money from the Archdiocese or from Rome in order to operate.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Parish has struggled financially, as contributions are signifi-
cantly lower than normal.

JANE: In the years that followed Steve’s confirmation, I finally responded to the invitation I heard in
my prayers and found my way onto the Parish Staff. I learned that parishes face serious budgeting
challenges to accommodate the many needs of a large and diverse parish like ours. Like others on the
staff, I learned the art of stretching dollars to keep within the budget.

I am now retired from my work on the staff but continue to be involved with the Standing with Haiti
Committee and RCIA. In 2011, I had the blessing of being invited to join our first parish delegation to
Haiti. In Haiti, the stifling poverty is everywhere. Yet when we went to Mass and the time came for
the collection, to my astonishment, every parishioner came forward to place his or her donation in a
box near the altar. Just like the poor widow in Mark’s Gospel, most had only a coin to offer, but eve-
ryone gave. The entire collection that day was only $12, and this parish had a school to support also!
Stewardship challenges exist not just in places like Haiti. They exist here too.

The world around us is not going in a direction that will guide any of us in our faith. For that, we need
our church, our parish, and our faith. Steve and I are so grateful for our faith, and for the community
that strengthens us in the ways of Christ. May God bless St. Anthony Parish.

The St. Vincent de Paul Conference here at St. Anthony offers you a chance to be needed, to
make a difference in our community, our world.

For 60 years, we have helped families here in Renton. Usually, we ask for money or food.
But, not today. Today, we ask for something even more important. We need you who have a
listening ear and compassionate heart to care about your neighbors more personally. We
need volunteers! We receive as many as 40 requests a week from those in need of rent, food,
utilities, and basic needs like soap. While our existing group has done an admirable job, it
is small, and the needs are great. We are in urgent need of you to join us and sustain our
work, especially volunteers who are bilingual in Spanish. Our contacts are currently by
phone only. Training is provided. Your few hours once a week can keep a family from
homelessness, provide a voucher for warm clothes, gas, or bus tickets for access to work, or
food for a family that has lost a wage earner to COVID.

In October, for example, we worked with a father who has 2 children. He was one of the
first victims of COVID. He has been sick since the beginning of March, and still has not
been able to go back to work due to ongoing issues with his lungs and weakness. He was
over $7,000 behind on rent. After talking with him and verifying his story, we were able to
get help for this family and prevent homelessness. He was so grateful that we listened to his
story and helped with rent. He has a plan to get back to work gradually.

Families like these are not just the “least of these”, they are our neighbors who have hit a
rough patch. Join us in helping to make the way smooth. Please contact Judy at

“Come, you who are blessed by my Father. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was
thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me,
ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.”
