A Way Out of Poverty

The world's love of chocolate, along with support from Catholic Relief Services (CRS),

is helping poor farmers in the Philippines restore their cacao groves and earn higherprices in the marketplace. That's because the farmers have improved how theygrow, ferment, and dry cacao until the beans turn a rich brown color, the type mostdesirable to major cacao buyers.

For Mary Mercy Pelaez, a 5l-year-old widow and mother of eight, it's like a rebirth.As part of a farmers "cluster" Mary's harvest is combined and marketed as one crop toget a better price.

She uses the money she makes to buy food and send her kids to school. "It reallyhelps,"she says. "I'm proud that even though I am a single mother since my husband died, Ican support my children."

In Madagascar, crops were planted close together and fields were flooded to helpprevent weed growth, a common approach. With careful experimentation andkeen observation, Father de Laulani6 developed the System of Rice lntensification(SRI). This method, although more time-consuming, vastly increases harvests whilerequiring 25 to 50 percent less water and 80 to 90 percent fewer seeds.

Since its introduction, SRI has been recognized by more than thirty countries,including Indonesia, China, and India, three of the largest rice-producing nationsin the world
