BEARERS OF THE WORD
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
December 31, 2017 The Church has placed a number of notable feast days immedi-
ately after Christmas. The feasts of Stephen, John the Evangelist,
and the Holy Innocents form a summary of the life lived in Christ,
the Word made flesh. What do these have to do with the feast of the
Holy Family, which crowns the Octave of Christmas? These feasts
remind us that suffering will occur in fulfilling the mission of
Christ, and that we are all called to be bearers of this Word whose
birth we celebrate.
We also see this manifested in the lives of Joseph and Mary,
both of whom took social and religious risks in obedience to the
will of God, and both of whom were open to the word of God sent
to them from on high. In these ways they prefigured the life of Jesus
himself.
Most likely, few of us found ourselves at Mass this past Tues-
day, Wednesday, or Thursday, but the essence of these feasts and
the essence of the holiness of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus remain cen-
tral, a holiness we celebrate today. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

One of my friends that I have met as a priest is very wealthy. They manage a family enterprise that is worth
millions. She and her husband are affectionately known as Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous. The majority of their large
gifts of support are done anonymously, they do not desire their names on things like the local swimming pool, or the
high school gym, or any of a hundred other projects in and around the city where they live. Not only do they help
with brick and mortar construction, they also build up people. They will pay for the education of any young person
who desires to be a carpenter, electrician, or plumber, provided that after becoming a journeyman or master you live
in the small communities in and around the Eastern Panhandle. The wife once told me, “Being wealthy carries a tre-
mendous amount of responsibility. First, our wealth must be placed at the service of the needs in the community we
live. And second and maybe more importantly, we must pass on this same understanding of wealth to our children.”
They have. The youngest son left the family business in order to become a teacher because the community was a
teacher short in the area he studied in College.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” We have been given a treasure more precious than fire tried
gold. A wealth that exceeds any bank balance we could ever possess. Do we place our belief at the service and
needs of the community to which we belong? Do we make sure that our children are grown to understand the same
value of the gift we have received? On this Feast of the Holy Family we must remember that the bonds of familial
love reach farther than the branches of our family tree. May we follow in the Holy Family’s footsteps carrying
Christ to whomever we meet.
From the desk of our pastor, Father Tony Neusch.
Rosary Prayed Sunday Morning, 8:45 Mass The Rosary prayed after the 8:45 am Mass
will now be prayed before Mass, starting at
8:30 am in the vestry, at the back of the
church. If you have any questions please call
the church office, 364-6150
ATTENTION. When there are funerals on weekdays,
Monday thru Friday, their will be no
morning/evening Mass for that day. If you have any
questions please call the church office, 364-6150. Do you know someone interested
in the Catholic faith but don't
know how to invite them inside?
Then, Let's Talk. Your pastor, Father Tony Neusch, or RCIA
Directors Janie Banner & Lisa Blakely will help you to
help your friends learn about the Catholic faith. Now is
the time for you to open that door to a fuller life for
someone you know. Inquiry Sessions
(R.C.I.A. = The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
is that Process into the Catholic Church. Don't
delay. Write down your name and number and place in
the collection basket, or next week, or give this form to
Father Tony or an usher after Mass.
