BLESSED In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on
the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer ex-
pression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of
us.
Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the
soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration
to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the de-
bris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny
ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they be
as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem
to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws.
And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old
goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The
old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus’ images, is true:
“What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh.” By and by,
the inside will show through. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS—LENT MISSION—APRIL 1 & 2 at 6:30 pm Saint Anthony of Padua has been called the Apostle of Forgiveness, perhaps because he calls for-
giveness a “‘spiritual almsgiving,’ without which all good things lack the reward of eternal life.”
By exploring some of the writings of the Evangelical Doctor, we will consider what it means to
forgive and how we might be moved to forgiveness so as to attain salvation.

From the desk of our pastor, Father Tony Neusch.
Lent is again upon us. This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. It begins our 40 day pilgrimage to the cross.
We are adding a couple of Lenten activities that may fit into your schedule and we hope will bring you closer to Je-
sus Christ this season of prayer.
Beginning March 13, there will be a Liturgy of the Word service every Wednesday beginning at 5:30pm. It will
be an opportunity to hear the following Sunday readings proclaimed with a short reflection to help us prepare for
the Word of God to break upon our waiting hearts.
Have you ever wanted to tell the priest how to put together his homily? Several years ago Fr. Jim Schmitmeyer
started a homily advisory group for Lent and Advent. He mentioned how enriching and helpful it was to put his
homily together. I have added this as well. It will include a period of Lectio Divina or Holy Reading and discus-
sion. The first of these times will be March 11. You can attend one or all, they will meet in the Antonian Room.
Please watch the bulletin as we will meet on different days at different times to let people come when their
schedules allow.
Word on Fire has offered a Lenten program free of charge to us through Flocknote called Engage! The welcome
video has been sent through Flocknote. If you did not receive this invitation, please sign up for Flocknote free of
charge at www. Flocknote.com.
At each of the exits this weekend there are Lenten reflection books and Rice Bowls to support Catholic Relief
Services. Stations of the Cross will be every Friday at 6:00pm in the Church with a simple meatless meal after
most of them.
May this Lent help us empty our lives of our sin and fill up our souls with Christ.
United States Fasting and Abstinence Norms
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays
during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fast-
ing, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.
The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14
onwards.
If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast"
to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate
more readily his Resurrection.
More information can be found at USCCB.org search “Fast and Abstinence”
