Dear Members:We have a very exciting and busy month ahead of us! The Professional Tennis Exhibition is almost here and I just want to extend a special thank you to Aaron for his sportsmanship and participation in preparing this exciting event for us. We are lucky to have him at St. Andrews! I also want to remind you that if you RSVP’d and are unable to attend, please let the Front Desk know so they can notify the next person on the wait list. Also coming up on Tuesday, February 17 is our St. Andrews Art Exhibition at the Boca Museum of Art. This is a great opportunity for the artists here in the club to showcase their works of art in a first class museum. The registration form and event information is located at the Front Desk and our website. You don’t want to miss out on this exciting opportunity and I look forward to seeing some great works of art. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, March 1 to Meet the Candidates for this year’s Board of Governors elections. I encourage all of you to attend and support our candidates. This is also your chance to ask any questions and voice your concerns. Later that week, the video will be available in your homes on Fision’s Video on Demand Community Channel for St. Andrews. There is a lot going on during Presidents’ week, especially for our children and grandchildren. There will be poolside activities on Monday, along with a Dive In Movie and of course, our Junior Golf and Junior Tennis Clinics. I hope to see you and your families enjoying the club. The Edwards Twins dinner show on January 21 was a sell-out and the feedback was “one of the very best events at St. Andrews.” It’s obvious you want more dinner “shows” and we hear you. We’re going to make it happen. Jody and I want to wish all of you a Happy Valentine’s Day. We look forward to seeing everyone at our annual Valentine’s Day Social.Stay Healthy,

Ed President, Board of Governors

Dear Members: The Club is in full swing with many activities planned for your enjoyment. Emma McHugh, Catering and Events Manager, has planned a full range of lectures and cultural events designed to meet a wide variety of interests. Our children’s programs are busier than ever with new members joining the Club with small to teenage children and taking part in our Kids Can Programs. The adult activities have something going on every week with featured speakers and book clubs to card playing events. We have even started a new Movie Club at a member’s request. It is wonderful to see how the Club has evolved with so much for everyone to enjoy. As members often comment to me, “It’s the best living here at St. Andrews as you wake up and don’t stop all day long until you go to bed.” We are working with various committees on planning future events to make life at St. Andrews even better and everyone is excited about the change in our Art Exhibition for members to showcase their talents at the Boca Museum. It is a rare opportunity to showcase your personal artwork in a premier art museum. Our real estate activity continues to be very positive with home sales and renovation activity within the community. Our membership base is growing with new members purchasing non-member homes who were grandfathered in at the time of mandatory membership. This transition adds more to our membership total of dues paying members which is a positive contribution to our finances in addition to above average income in our Catering Department and retail sales in Golf, Tennis and the Spa. We experienced positive financial results in our first two months of the fiscal year with the Club benefitting from the professional team monitoring expenses within the budget goals and reducing waste without sacrificing any of our standards. We appreciate the positive feedback from you on the various improvements to the Club facilities with most comments focused on service and product. The majority of feedback is very positive towards the condition of the golf courses, the number of planned activities, service at the pool and Lakeside, both of which are being highly utilized. I encourage members to come and enjoy the outdoor patio area at Lakeside and the fire pit overlooking the water is a wonderful place for dinner and cocktails.

Sincerely,

Style

Craig D. Martin, CCM, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager

February 2015 Style Magazine

The S.A.W.G.A.’s 2015 season is off to an exciting start. The Presidents’ Cup was played on January 13 and 15 with some new faces and pairings in the field and playoffs. Ina Rae Fox fielded a great group of golfers for the Country Club Challenge against Delaire. They teed off on January 27 in their new coral team shirts. The second round is on February 3.Please sign up in foursomes, wear pink and support Play for P.I.N.K. which is being chaired by Shelley Harris and Judi Falk on Tuesday, February 24. There are fabulous raffle prizes and an amazing Grand raffle prize from a “name” department store. Although you must be an S.A.W.G.A. member to play, we welcome anyone who would like to make a donation and join us for lunch. Please send in all monies by February 15. Check your email and snail mail for details OR call our Golf Shop or Chairs for any information you may need. We are proud to have contributed so generously to the $4.5 million dollars that went to Play for P.I.N.K. this past year.Apple, kelly, lime, bottle, forest, emerald, mint, basil, sea foam, crocodile, olive.... Can you name “50 Shades of Green” that will be worn by our S.A.W.G.A. members and their guests on March 15. Serena Werber and Laura Blackman have an amazing Ladies’ Member-Guest Day planned. Please make sure you have sent back your registration forms to Serena. Our Golf Shop will have loads of greens from which to put that “perfect” outfit together, so please check with Victoria Matthews, Retail Buyer/Golf Shop Manager or her terrific staff. Also time to work on your golf game. Contact Paul Clivio, our Director of Golf, and his staff. Please post all rounds of golf including nine hole rounds or more. Our computer combines two nine hole scores and any round not completed you can always take Equitable score for the remaining holes so you can put a score in each time you play. It is up to all of us to have current handicaps that will “level the playing field.” Golf is a game if honor. This will help us enjoy friendly, competitive golf on tournament and social days. Wendy Kohansky and Linda Soicher, Handicap Chairs, as well as the Pros are happy to help. Just a reminder that there are golf clinics on Thursdays, plus special clinics for new golfers on Saturdays. Just check with the Golf Shop and Club calendar.

Aaron Krickstein Director of Tennis

Over NetTHE

Tennis anyone? That seemed to be the theme last month as our most recent December holiday tennis season was by far the most active we have ever had here at beautiful St. Andrews Country Club. The courts were buzzing all day with fun and loads of activity. All our tournaments and events were well attended and the professional staff was also in very high demand with lessons and clinics. Our Junior Holiday Program once again had record turnout and continues to grow every year! It was really great to see all the younglings (ages 3 thru 14) having so much fun on the courts. One recent event I would like to report on is our annual Men’s / Women’s Pro-Am. This is arguably our most popular event of the season. Twenty members and twenty south Florida professionals teamed up and played some entertaining yet competitive tennis. After two hours and four rounds, winners were crowned. Our Ladies’ Champion was new member Melissa Hoffman – who used her steady groundstrokes and keen court sense to get by the always tough Karen Weisfeld. On the Men’s side, another new member Steve Stoller took home the Men’s title. Steve used his experience and skilled shot making to beat hard hitting Finalist Russell Weisz. Thanks again to everyone for their participation and support. In closing, I want to remind all our members of the upcoming Professional Tennis Exhibition match on Tuesday evening, February 10 at 5:00 p.m. Yours truly will be competing against former world #1 and 8-time Grand Slam Champion Jimmy Connors. My good friend, the always humorous Jimmy Arias, will also be back this year as MC/chair umpire so it should a very fun and memorable evening. I look forward to seeing everyone there. See you on the Courts!

Safety is our number one concern in the gym and we need your help keeping everyone safe. • When on the Treadmill USE the safety clip provided on

your clothing. This way the machine will shut down if you trip or fall.

• Remember the Lip of the flooring near cardio machines is half an inch higher than the other flooring. Pick up those feet!

• Return ALL items to their proper place when finished. Items left out are dangerous trip hazards for others in the gym.

• Use your legs and core to lift weights/equipment, bending over and using the smaller back muscles is going to tweak your back.

• Make sure treadmills are completely shut off as you exit, leaving it running can be a problem for the next user.

• Although all our equipment is checked monthly please inform Ginger or the Front Desk of any problems you experience with machines.

Jackie Martinez Director of Spa

What an amazing time The Spa and team had over winter break! We seamlessly managed record breaking numbers with over 1300 of your family members, guests and of course our phenomenal members enjoying everything the Spa has to offer. Together we all were able to share in some very special memories.

What a delightful experience to see and hear how amazed people were in regards to our treatments, service, activities and facilities! We too reached record numbers in the spa capturing 152 appointments in a day with our quaint 5 treatment room facility that also hosts hair and nail services. We utilized every space available to accommodate the popularity of our treatments and services; and the rave reviews received were most rewarding.

Please call the Fitness Center at 470-6565 for more information. Calendar subject to change.

Equalizer - February 25; Iron Lady - March 4; Canasta Tournament - March 12; Mahjongg Tournament - March 5.See everyone at the card tables.

With record attendance, welcoming new members and greeting members who have moved but were not forgotten by their friends, we had a wonderfully successful event on January 26.Once again, without our phenomenal staff, this event would not be possible. We thank one and all for their efforts, patience, and expertise for taking this event from planning to fruition. After ten years of seeing the same format, this committee was thinking of changing the format with some input from the members who have almost always, and continue to, participate in this event. We are thinking of not having vendors participate in 2016. We were however, thinking of initiating a prize winning Canasta Tournament along with our Duplicate Bridge, Social Bridge, Canasta, Mahjongg and Pan.We would like feedback from the membership. Linda Spielmann Director of Catering

Are you always hungry? What if it is overeating that causes us to get fat, but the process of getting fatter that causes us to overeat? The more

calories we lock away in fat tissue, the fewer there are circulating in the bloodstream to satisfy the body’s requirements. It seems to be a distribution problem. We have an abundance of calories, but they’re in the wrong place, and they are not working for us. As a result, the body needs to increase its intake. We get hungrier because we’re getting fatter. When fat cells suck up too much fuel, calories from food promote the growth of fat tissue instead of serving the energy needs of the body, provoking overeating in all but the most disciplined individuals. This is why diets that rely on consciously reducing calories don’t usually work. So, what do we do? Well, many biological factors affect the storage of calories in fat cells: levels of physical activity, sleep, and stress. But one has an indisputably dominant role: The Hormone: INSULIN. We know that excess insulin causes weight gain, and insulin deficiency causes weight loss. The highly refined carbohydrates like chips, crackers, cakes, soft drinks, sugary breakfast cereals, and even white rice and bread produce the most insulin.THE SOLUTION: GET OUR INSULIN IN BALANCE! HOW?• Eat High Fiber, low sugar carbohydrates like Ezekiel®

breads, oatmeal, lentils, beans, sweet potatoes, and grains like millet and quinoa.

• Exercise regularly and consistently. Exercise helps in keeping our insulin in balance. It should be part of your day, it makes you feel better, and it is a necessity!

• We all have stress, we can choose how to deal with it. Take good care of yourself, and remember when we simply breathe in and out, our hormone, cortisol will be less, which will help in weight loss.

• Get your sleep; technology has been a disturbance to our sleep. Think wisely. Sleep is essential for keeping our insulin in balance, making better choices, and being in the moment.

• Eat slower; enjoy and taste your food. The nutrients will be better assimilated and you will feel fuller and more satisfied. If you fall off the wagon, no guilt, we are human, just get back on. Embrace your health, not your weight, and you will be more successful with reaching your ideal body weight.
