St. Andrew Presbyterian Church www.standrewpresbyterian.org 301-223-8887 JUNE 2017 Rooted in Love, Grounded in Grace, Growing for God Dear Friends, The columns for 2017 have been focusing on how to grow deeper in your faith, using spiritual disciplines to do so. The disciplines that I have written about so far are: study of the Word of God; worship attendance; scripture study with others (Sunday School and Bible Study), evangelism (inviting others to church and Sunday School), confession, fasting, and prayer. The discipline that I would like to highlight this month is meditation. In our society today, we are filled with busyness and distractions. Many are tied intimately to their phones or to their other electronic devices. Many are involved in many, many activities. This leaves many a person exhausted and emotionally drained. The answer from the scriptures is meditation. Many times we are called from scripture to meditate, or we see Bible figures actually meditating. Isaac went out into the field to medi- tate (Genesis 24:63). The Psalm writer stated, “I think of Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the watches of the night.” (Psalm 63:6) We are to emulate the blessed person whose delight is in the Lord and His law, upon which we are to “meditate upon it day and night.” (Psalm 1:2) I could go on but we need to define what it means to meditate. Meditation means not only to listen to God and God’s Word but also to reflect upon God’s Word and His works. We are to ruminate upon God’s law and see how we are following it. We are to look at God’s creation and marvel at its beauty and thus God’s majesty. As we do this, we will be blessed to experience God at a deeper level. We will begin to discern God’s will in our lives and thus have a clearer direction for what we are to do. As a result of meditation, we will need less running after the trends and events of the day, and we will receive more calm and assurance in our lives. Thomas a Kempis, a spiritual writer of a day gone by, stated that meditation will bring us into a “familiar friendship with Jesus.” As we spend time pondering God’s creation, may God help us to live out our mission statement to the world that we are grounded in grace, living in love, and growing for God. JUNE 2017

Rooted in Love, Grounded in Grace, Growing for God

Dear Friends, The columns for 2017 have been focusing on how to grow deeper in your faith, using spiritual disciplines to do so. Isaac went out into the field to medi-tate (Genesis 24:63). Thomas a Kempis, a spiritual writer of a day gone by, stated that meditation will bring us into a “familiar friendship with Jesus.” As we spend time pondering God’s creation, may God help us to live out our mission statement to the world that we are grounded in grace, living in love, and growing for God. son, Colton McKinley, Will McKinley, Emmy Paul, Sutton Risley, Lauren Scumpieru, and Lucas Scumpieru.

Sunday School Snippets Toddler Class: The Toddler Class learned about Easter, and that Jesus is alive and we can talk to Him any time. Pre-K Class: Congratulations to the following students for memorizing their Blble verse, “Serve one another in love”, Galatians 5:13: Gavin Babb, Colton McKinley, Lily South, Maggie Wise, and Norah Wise. The Pre-K students have been learning how we can tell other people about the love of Jesus, and that we can show others the love of Jesus by our actions. Kindergarten/1st Grade: Congratulations to the following students: Natalie Farioli, Bro-dy Hemphill, and Lauren Scumpieru, for memorizing their Bible verse, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Natalie, Abby, and Brody are being recognized this month in Sunday School. Natalie and Abby are very active participants, and Brody pays very close attention to the Bible story each week and gives in depth answers. The Kinder-garten and First Grade students are learning how Jesus’ friends help others, and how God gives us different jobs. 2nd/3rd Grade: Congratulations to the following students: Allie Babb, Logan Farioli, Jeremy Hemphill, Skylar Lange, Will McKinley, and Evie Wise, for memorizing their Bi-ble verse, “God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” Psalm 46:1. The students have learned that God is always there when we need wisdom, strength, comfort, guidance, peace, and calmness. We can talk to Him at any time and not be afraid or ashamed to share our fears and feelings to God. The students have recently been study-ing: Being close to Jesus, Jesus comforts us in our time of need, Telling others about Je-sus, Sharing and doing good, Accepting others, and Praying about our problems. 4th/5th Grade: The students continue to study the gifts of the Holy Spirit. With the coming of the Holy Spirit, after Jesus ascended into Heaven, many came to believe in Jesus and the church began to grow significantly. 6th-8th Grade: Congratulations to Claude Paul for doing his weekly devotions and then sharing them during Sunday School. The students were busy during the month of May. They made a special surprise for Mother’s Day. Thank you to the class and their teachers, Miss Tammy and Miss Tonya, for presenting such a wonderful telling of three of Jesus’ par-ables for the Dessert Theatre. What a fun way to study and learn about the parables by acting them out and sharing it with all of us. Teen Class: The Teen Class uses The Blueprint, a Christian magazine for teens. This past quarter, they have studied: Jesus’ death, He took our punishment upon the cross, The as-surance that He is coming back some day, and Connecting and belonging in our new life in Christ.

It may be summer vacation from school, but Sunday School takes no vacation. After all, God doesn’t take a vacation from us. We will have Sunday School all summer. If you haven’t joined a class yet, now would be the perfect time. There are two adult classes of-fered. Pastor Mark and Hank Hemphill teach a Bible Study in the conference room. The other adult class, the Voyager Class, is a discussion oriented class. They are currently reading and discussing Choosing to See, by Mary Beth Chapman. There are extra copies of the book if you would like to join their class. The Voyager Class meets in the room across from the conference room.

We have classes for all ages of children. The younger classes, 5th grade and below, meet in the sanctuary from 9:45-10:00 a.m. for a short opening. At 10:00, the students are dismissed to their classes. Any student who is in 3rd grade or below needs to be picked up by a parent/grandparent or older sibling, by 10:45 a.m. The older grades meet directly in their classrooms at 9:45 a.m.

If you have any questions about Sunday School, location of classrooms, etc., please see Pastor Mark or Annette.

minders for you: If you are planning on attending VBS and have not yet registered, please do so TO-

2017 Graduates We are so proud of our 2017 high school

and college graduates. Congratulations! Please make sure to stop by the office and pick up your card and gift from the church if you haven’t yet done so.

Brooke Beckley Brooke graduated from Washington

County Technical High School. While at Tech High, Brooke received her certification for firefighter and EMT through the Univer-sity of Maryland. While in high school, Brooke has also received her certification for firefighter (level 2), EMT, rescue tech, and HAZMAT operations. In the fall, Brooke will be attending Shepherd Univer-sity. Her future plans are to be an EMT.

Brooke has been a part of this church ever since she was born. She celebrated her 1st birthday here at church in the basement. In more recent times, Brooke has been a member of our youth group, Sunday School, and went on our mission trip to Big Creek, Kentucky. Brooke made a big splash in Kentucky where she helped the local children learn to swim. Currently, Brooke goes on call for both Halfway and Fairplay Fire Companies.

It is amazing all what Brooke has ac-complished in her short 18 years of life, EMT, firefighter, and rescue tech! Wow! We are so proud of you and all your achievements. We pray for God’s guidance, safety, and protection for you as you pre-pare for your life and career as a paramed-ic. Daulton Beckley

Daulton graduated from Washington County Technical High School with a certi-fication of a firefighter/EMT through the University of Maryland. Congratulations to Daulton, who received his certification in firefighter level 2, EMT, rescue tech, and HAZMAT operations. This summer, he is planning to train in Montgomery or Prince George’s County to become a paid firefight-er.

Daulton has been a part of the church ever since he was born. It has been such a joy to watch Daulton and his twin sister, Brooke, grow up in the church. Daulton has been a part of our Sunday School, was youth group president, and went on our mission trip to Kentucky, where he helped serve the people in the poorest county in the U.S.A. Currently, Daulton is now run-ning calls for Fairplay and Halfway Fire Companies.

Daulton, we are so proud of you and all your achievements over the past few years. It takes a very special person to become a firefighter. You know that our prayers go with you. May the Lord bless you with pro-tection and safety every day.

Noah Gross Noah graduated from Spring Mills High

School. While in high school, Noah was a member of the National Honors Society, Science National Honors Society, and TriM Music Honors Society. He was also award-ed the International Thespian Society Out-standing Actor Award, as well as the WV State Thespian Festival Honor Drive. Wow! This summer, Noah will be working at An-tietam Recreation as the drama director and talent coach. He will be playing Jean Valjean in Les Miserables at the Mussel-man High School on July 1. He will also be starring in Thoroughly Modern Milly at the Capitol Theater in Chambersburg on July 29.

In the fall, Noah will be attending WVU towards getting a B.A. in Musical Theater, and also a minor in Business. Noah even-tually plans to move to NYC or LA to find work. Noah, we are so proud of you and all your achievements. We have been blessed here at St. Andrew as we have seen you perform many times here at church, and in local theaters. We know first hand the amazing skills that God has given you.

Our church takes many bus trips to NYC to see various plays being performed there. Perhaps we will see you on stage at some point. We know God has great plans for you. We are so excited to see what God has in store for your future. Know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers as you enter a new and exciting chapter in your life.

Scott Long Scott attended Bridgewater College and

majored in Biology. He was very involved with cross country and indoor and outdoor track while at Bridgewater. Scott’s future plans are to join the military at some point. He would like to be a physician’s assistant while serving in the military.

Scott has been attending St. Andrew ev-er since he was a small child. For those of us who have been here a while, it has been a joy watching Scott grow up!

In more recent years, we have enjoyed the letters and notes that you sent to the church. It was so much fun receiving your letters and letting us know how you were doing. Thank you for all the letters you sent. They were greatly appreciated. It was always such a joy to see you at church when you are home during college breaks. Scott, we are so proud of you! We know that God has great plans for you, and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you begin a new chapter in your life.

Allison Martin Allison graduated from Radford Univer-

sity Summa cum laude, with a dual degree in Fashion Design and Accounting! This summer, she will be putting her time and energy to good use utilizing her skills in fashion design as she will be making her sister, Amanda’s wedding dress. Wow! What a labor of love. At this time, Allison is waiting to see where God will lead her for a job—in the line of accounting or in the field of fashion design.

Allison has been attending this church ever since she was a little girl. It has been such a joy to watch her grow up through-out the years. Ever since she was a little girl, Allison, along with her sister, Amanda, and Grandma Kay Tuttle, would attend when we went to visit the residents at Homewood Retirement Community. Oh, the joy of the residents when they saw the adorable faces of these little girls. As Alli-son got older, she voluntarily helped in the church nursery on a regular basis. Allison has a servant’s heart for both the young and the old.

God certainly has gifted you in a variety of ways. It will be exciting to see where He will lead you. You will be in our thoughts and prayers as you begin this exciting new chapter in your life.

Aidan McLane Aidan graduated from Boonsboro High

School. He received Maryland’s Bi-Literacy Achievement for excellence in Spanish. He also was very involved with outdoor track at Boonsboro High School. His school re-ceived 1st Place overall in the county track competition. This summer, Aidan will be working at a local doctor’s office. Aidan will be attending the University of Maryland next year. He will be majoring in bio-chemistry.

Page 10: St. Andrew Presbyterian Church · 2017-06-02 · St. Andrew Presbyterian Church 301-223-8887 JUNE 2017 Rooted in Love, Grounded in Grace, Growing for God Dear Friends, The columns

page 10

Not only was Aidan an honor student, and track star, he was also very involved with the Boy Scouts. He is currently work-ing on his Eagle project, Antietam Railway Station Drainage and Bell Project, which consists of landscaping and creating a drainage site.

We are so proud of you, Aidan! It takes a special person to juggle the academics of high school, time spent on the track team, and the goal of achieving Eagle Scout! May God guide and direct you every step of your way as you go to college next year. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Sarah Shirk Sarah graduated with honors from

Churchville Christian High School. This summer, Sarah will be working at Antietam Recreation as a swim instructor, and at On Stage Performance (a family owned and run studio), as a dance instructor. Sarah won 1st Place in the overall Senior Division as a solo/duet competition at the Dance Cham-pionship. Her future plans are to work full time as a dance instructor at On Stage Per-formance.

We have been blessed many times to see Sarah perform here at church. Her athleti-cism is truly amazing. God blessed Sarah with a body that is able to bend in ways that defy nature! Sarah has a heart to serve God, not only as an instructor of dance and swim, but also on the mission field. She has gone on our mission trip to Big Creek, Kentucky. She chooses to work with the children at the day camp. All year long, Sarah collects things to bring to these children. She has definitely made a differ-ence in the lives of these families who re-side in the poorest county in the U.S.A.

We are so proud of you, Sarah, for your servant’s heart and for using your gifts and talents to serve God. May God continue to guide and direct you as you begin the next chapter in your life!

Membership Support Our beautiful new addition has drawn fa-

vorable comments from our congregation, visitors, and those who happen to drive by. What a blessing for our growing church to be an example of our faithfulness and God’s providence. Just think of all the wonderful celebrations and tender memories that will be shared within these walls.

We are blessed to have quite a number of visitors each Sunday. Those who return of-ten speak of our comfortable, meaningful service, and the warm welcome they receive. Thanks to all who greet the visitors, encour-age them to sign the attendance pad, and di-rect them to our welcome table for a gift bag.

Our church gardens are one of the first signs of welcome to those coming to church. Keeping the gardens looking good requires regular maintenance. If you would like to help with gardening, please contact Kitty Harbaugh.

As you walk through our church, please pause a minute to look at our bulletin boards, which highlight many of our minis-tries. You will find information about our outreach support, P. W. activities and up-coming tours, and a graph showing where we live. Coming soon will be VBS infor-mation, youth mission trip photos, and pho-tos of our church leaders and teachers. Also of interest each week is the informational counter, right outside the sanctuary, where sign-up sheets are located for upcoming events.

Another place to visit to learn about our ministry is our church website: stan-drewpresbyterian.org. You’ll find photos of church events, the monthly calendar, and other church news. You can also listen to sermons and choir anthems. Check it out!

St. Andrew is indeed a beacon on the hill as we share God’s love with the community through our many faith-based activities and outreach programs.

page 11

Stewardship Summertime stewardship may look dif-

ferent from the rest of the year. While a few church activities take a hiatus during the summer, many of our ministries con-tinue all year.

Vacations may allow us to use our time and talent as we participate in church ac-tivities we might not have time for during the year. Volunteering at VBS, the Food Bank, or the Shepherd’s Table are possibil-ities. Perhaps going on the mission trip or staying home to do odd jobs around the church (like gardening) may be options for you. Let Pastor Mark or one of the commit-tee members know of your interest.

Vacations may take us away from at-tending church every Sunday. However, tithes and offerings are still needed, since our church functions on them for our budgeted expenses. One suggestion is to establish an automatic withdrawal pay-ment with your bank for regular church fi-nancial obligations.

If you have a box of numbered offering envelopes, please use them every time you make your offering. Using the envelopes makes it easier to record your donations. This is the only way we can keep a record of your donations for tax purposes. If you don’t have numbered envelopes, and would like them, call the office with your request.

Witness & Mission When the Back to School

Sales start, be on the lookout for great deals on binders, notebook paper, pencils, colored pencils, pens, crayons, pencil pouches, rulers, and scissors. We will be providing 24 backpacks full of supplies to children in the Williamsport schools. Thank you for your help with this project.

Our grand total collected for One Great Hour of Sharing was $1208.39. Thanks for your generosity.

If you would like to donate to some of the areas that recently experienced natural disasters, please use the pew envelopes and write on it, “Presbyterian Disaster As-sistance”. Thank you.

Wall of Sharing Youth Group Fundraiser

In July, we will travel to Big Creek in Kentucky, and have many opportunities to minister to the needs of this area. The Wall of Sharing Fundraiser can be your way of helping to raise the money needed to mis-sion to these areas. There are still lots of envelopes available. The steps are simple: choose an envelope with a dollar amount, put that amount in the envelope, then give the envelope to Pastor Mark. You can choose an envelope that is your birthday, favorite number, or give together with someone. We thank you for your generosi-ty!

Thank You Many thanks to the Presbyterian Wom-

en for their generous gift to me for teaching the Circle lesson this year. You have touched me greatly, and I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

In Christ’s love, Pastor Mark
