  • Prayer to St. Michael

    Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be

    our protection against the wickedness and the snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

    Mary, Queen of the Apostles and Patroness of our Diocese, Pray for us.

    Prayers Before Mass

    Diocesan Prayer for God’s Protection in the face of the Coronavirus Pandemic

    Loving and gracious God, as in all times, we turn to You and implore Your protection and healing as we face a new threat to our health and peaceful well-being in the coronavirus pandemic before us. Help us to be united with each other and with all of our brothers and sisters around the world affected by this illness. We pray for all those in the medical field who are assisting patients and in the field of science who are discerning a cure, as well as for all government leaders. Remember those who, through this virus, have passed from this life as well as their families in their loss. At this time of fragile uncertainty, we also humbly implore You to grant us prudence, hope, courage and patience. Dispel from us fear, panic and distrust which disrupt us in spirit to the detriment of our well-being. We make our prayer in the name of your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who always cured those who were sick with vari-ous diseases and drove out many demons.

    Our Lady, Patroness of our Diocese, Queen of the Apostles and Comforter of the

    Afflicted, Pray for us. Amen.

    All of the information needed for today’s liturgy is found in this bulletin, including Readings, and Responses.

    April 4th, 2021 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

    Penitential Act: A

    The Confiteor

    I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

    Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, All bow at the words that follow, up to and including and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was cruci-fied under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church, I confess one Baptism for the for-giveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks, for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us, you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

  • FIRST READING A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

    Acts of the Apostles 10:34a, 37-43

    Peter proceeded to speak and said: “You know what has hap-pened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and heal-ing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.”

    The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    Gospel John 20:1-9 The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading form the holy Gospel according to John Glory to you, O Lord. On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

    The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

    819-3

    RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 118:1-2,16-17,22-23

    R. (24) This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice

    and be glad. or:

    R. Alleluia. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,

    for his mercy endures forever. Let the house of Israel say,

    “His mercy endures forever.” R. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be

    glad. or:

    R. Alleluia. “The right hand of the LORD has struck with power;

    the right hand of the LORD is exalted. I shall not die, but live,

    and declare the works of the LORD.” R. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be

    glad. The stone which the builders rejected

    has become the cornerstone. By the LORD has this been done;

    it is wonderful in our eyes. R. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be

    R. Alleluia, alleluia. Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed;

    let us then feast with joy in the Lord. R. Alleluia, alleluia. .

    SECOND READING A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the

    Colossians Colossians 3:1-4

    Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.

    OR:

    I Cor 5:6b-8

    Brothers and sisters: Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough? Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

    The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    Our Easter Mission “Have no fear. The outcome of the battle for life is already decid-ed, even though the struggle goes on against great odds and with much suffering… "Christ is now raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep ... so in Christ all will come to life again" (1 Cor. 15:2022). The paradox of the Christian mes-sage is this: Christ - the head - has already conquered sin and death. Christ in his body - the pilgrim people of God - continually suffers the onslaught of the Evil One and all the evil which sinful humanity is capable of.

    ”The liberating message of the Gospel of life has been put into your hands. And the mission of proclaiming it to the ends of the earth is now passing to your generation. Like the great apostle Paul, you too must feel the full urgency of the task: "Woe to me if I do not evangelize" (1 Cor. 9:16). Woe to you if you do not succeed in defending life. The church needs your energies, your enthusiasm, your youthful ideals, in order to make the Gospel of life penetrate the fabric of society, transforming people's hearts and the structures of society in order to create a civilization of true justice and love.” – Pope John Paul II to Youth, August 15, 1993, Denver, Colorado.

    Easter Evidence: At the Heart of the Church’s Mission

    Easter Sunday is the Church’s greatest feast day — a day in which we celebrate Jesus Christ’s Resurrection from the dead. It is the “Feast of feasts” and the “Solemnity of solemnities.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “Beginning with the Easter Triduum as its source of light, the new age of the Resurrection fills the whole liturgical year with its brilliance” (No. 1168). Christians believe that Jesus “crushed death,” and the “mystery of the Resurrection … permeates with its powerful energy our old time, until all is subjected to him (CCC, No. 1169).

    Jesus Christ truly died on Good Friday. There was no mistaken prognosis that Jesus did not really expire on the cross; there was no accidentally identifying Jesus as someone else. There was no theft of Jesus’ body from the tomb; no swallowing up of the body in an earthquake. From the beginning, Christians proclaimed not only the resurrection of Jesus, but also his very real death. His human soul separated from his human body. All of the gospels testify to this. Without that death, his appearances to the women and to his apostles on Easter morning would have been hum-drum. Instead, people were terrified, overjoyed and astonished.

    There are factors that confirm the Church in her faith in the resurrection of Jesus. First is the empty tomb. The apostles saw the empty tomb and heard the testimony of the women who went there on the first Easter morning: “…[The empty tomb was…an essential sign for all. Its discovery by the disciples was the first step toward recognizing the very fact of the Resurrection.” (CCC, No. 640).

    Second, the apostles saw Jesus with their own eyes. They disbelieved at first — and who wouldn’t? — but were convinced by the fact that they could touch him, speak to him and eat with him. Jesus’ body was clearly different than it was before, and almost always the women, the apostles and the disciples do not recognize him at first. Each time, however, Jesus reveals himself to them, and they are able to make the connection that this one standing before them was the same one who died by crucifixion on Good Friday. In the encounter with the apostle Thomas, Jesus actu-ally points to his wounds as the way for Thomas to make the connection that the man standing before him, talking and breathing, is the same man who was crucified. Jesus had to lead Thomas and the others to that understanding, because his glorified and risen body was no longer subject to the limitations of space and time. He could appear as he wished, when he wished. He could be in their presence and not reveal him-self, and then allow them to recognize him in an instant. All of this has to do with his glorified, risen humanity and its new properties. “At Jesus’ Resurrection his body is filled with the power of the Holy Spirit: he shares the divine life in his glorious state, so that St. Paul can say that Christ is ‘the man of heaven’” (CCC, No. 646).

    The Resurrection also brought St. Paul, who hated Christians, to believe in Christ and to be baptized in Damascus, after having encountered him on the road there. He saw him with his own eyes. He heard his voice. He spoke to him. Later, in his letter to the Galatians, Paul had to compare his authority to preach the gospel as being on par with that of the first apostles, and so he based his valid apostleship on his encounter with the risen Jesus. He himself saw the Lord Jesus risen from the dead, and from that encounter, Paul’s life was transformed, and he became God’s apostle.

    It was the fact of the resurrection that compelled the apostles to preach that Jesus was and always will be the true messiah and the savior of the world. It is still the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus that compels Christians to share his life and message and to dedicate their lives to him. With-out the resurrection, Paul says, Christianity is useless: “For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins” (1 Cor 15: 16-17). He continues: “But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive” (v. 20-22).

    Because of the evidence of the empty tomb and the encounters of the risen Jesus with the women, the apostles and disciples, and St. Paul, the Church has always believed and preached the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It is the moment that definitively changed human history forever. Jesus’ rising from the dead was the catalyst for all evangelization, meaning the fact of Jesus’ resurrection impelled the apostles to go and tell people what had happened. That is still what the Church proclaims today, and she always will.

    THE FEAST OF

    SUNDAY, APRIL 11, 2021

    AApril 11, 2021 Divine Mercy Sunday

    What is Divine Mercy Sunday? Divine Mercy Sunday, or the Second Sunday of Easter closes the East-er octave. It shows forth the bond between the Easter mystery of man’s redemption and Divine Mercy. Indeed, the Paschal Mystery bears with-in itself the most complete revelation of mercy (Dives in Misericordia, 15) Thus, most appropriately, it is to be: -a day of worship of God’s mercy, - a day of grace for all people. According to Our Lord’s own words, it is to be a refuge and shelter for all souls, especially sinners; and for the consolation of the whole world. (cf. Diary) 699, 1517) What is essential on Divine Mercy Sunday? The focus should be on the celebration of the Eucharist. Jesus promises to give us a wealth of graces through Holy Communion received worthily that day. How to prepare for Divine Mercy Sunday? Priests best prepare their flock by: Bringing the faithful close to the sources of the Savior’s mer-cy, above all by encouraging a conscious and mature participation in the Eucharist and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The faithful should focus on: Inner conversion and renewal in order to allow God’s mercy to work in their hearts. Participate in penitential services and approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation as an act of trust in God’s mercy. Novena Our Lord gave St. Faustina a Novena to His Mercy. We should recite the Novena every day for 9 consecutive days, beginning on Good Friday. This will help us in being united with the Lord during the days of His Passion and Resurrection, and it will foster a proper disposition of soul to receive the promised graces on Divine Mercy Sunday. By this novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls ( Diary 796) What graces does the Lord want to give the faithful on that day? The unique grace of complete remission of sins and punish-ment. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment (Diary 699) An ocean of redemptive graces and temporal blessings without limit. I Pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy . On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are open. (Diary 699) What are the conditions to receive these graces? Receive Holy communion worthily on Divine Mercy Sunday; that is, one should be in a state of grace and, moreover, free from any attachment to sin. Fulfill the basic conditions of the devotion to the Divine Mercy: Have an attitude of great trust in the mercy of God: Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. (Diary 699) Perform deeds of mercy: there must also be acts of mercy (Diary,742) Pope John Paul II officially declared during the homily of the Mass for Sister Faustina Kowalska’s canonization on April 30, 2000: It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of god on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church will be called “Divine Mercy Sunday”.

    Plenary indulgence - The usual conditions for every plenary indulgence: Sacramental confession [according to previously issued norms, within abut 20 days before or after] . Eucharistic communion [according to previously issued norms, preferably on the day, or the days before or after] . Prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff [certain prayers are not specified].
