SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
Ss. Cosmas & Damian Conference
At the end of our fiscal year, we are obliged to report
our financial status, but in this process, we pause to
reflect on just how important SVdP is to our
community. During this past year, Ss. Cosmas &
Damian SVdP helped a total of 297 neighbors in
need. Our members made 102 person-to-person
visits in homes and at our church.
The total assistance provided to our neighbors in
need last year was $27,076, and of this, $11,852
was given as housing assistance which allowed 71
people to stay in their homes, who otherwise
wouldn’t be able to.
The total donations from Ss. Cosmas & Damian, St.
Andrew, and St. Aloysius (Buckley) parishes was
$20,492. Through other donations and fundraising
we also received $8,413.
SVdP thanks you, our supporters, for your continued
generous contributions. Your charity has kept
neighbors in their homes, electricity on and water
flowing, helped pay for gas to get to work, diapers
for infants plus much, much more. St. Vincent’s
teachings echo the Gospel message from Matthew:
“Whatever you did for one of these least brothers or
sisters of mine, you did it for me”.
STEWARDSHIP
Thank you to our families who have
returned their Stewardship Commitment
Pledge card. If you have not yet done
so, please prayerfully consider what you
will do with the gifts given to you by
grace and place your pledge card in the collection
basket or return by mail.
Articles for the December 8th bulletin are due on Friday, November 29th. Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP
Give, and it will be given
to you. They will pour into
your lap a good meas-
ure—pressed down,
shaken together, and
running over. For by your standard of measure it
will be measured to you in return. ~Luke 6:38
If you haven’t already decided on your parish
stewardship commitment, please prayerfully
consider God’s promises and make your pledge.
You may return it in the collection basket, to the
parish office, or through the mail.
What is the right amount to give? When you are
at peace about the size of your gift--when you do
not find yourself making excuses for its size
(either too big or too small) and you know in
your heart that you have been completely honest
with yourself and God--then your gift is the
proper size.
UPDATE FROM THE BUILDING COMMITTEE
The Saint Andrew Building Committee has been
meeting regularly each month. Our meetings
are an opportunity to review the progress of
both the design and permitting for the Parish
Hall. To date, the project status is as follows:
RMC Architects currently has permit
documents under review by the City of Sumner
for both a conditional use permit (CUP) and the
Washington State Environmental Policy Act
(SEPA). Dialogue continues between these
parties. This can be a lengthy process. As such,
we are still tracking to have all permits issued so
we can break ground in the second quarter of
2020.
Our contractor, Hilger Construction, is also
attending our Committee meetings, providing
cost input as the design progresses.
The Committee is now focusing on some of
the material selections for both the exterior and
interior of the Parish Hall. Hilger Construction is
also providing cost data based on those
selections. RMC Architects is also advising us on
the selections being made, as well as refining
some of the finish details in the design.
As things are moving a little quicker in both
design and permitting, the Building Committee is
now meeting two times per month. This will
continue until both the design and permitting
process are further along, and we get close to
actual groundbreaking.

ST. CATHERINE OF
ALEXANDRIA
FEAST DAY: NOVEMBER 25
Catherine is thought to have
been born to a noble family in
Alexandria, Egypt. Through a
vision, this scholarly young woman converted to
Christianity and began evangelizing others,
including the wife of the pagan emperor who
was persecuting Christians. According to legend,
after she defied the emperor and refuted
philosophers brought in to test her faith, she was
imprisoned and tortured. She was put on a
rotating spiked wheel; when it broke, she was
beheaded. She is venerated as the Great Martyr
St. Catherine in the Orthodox tradition and her
voice was among those heard by St. Joan of Arc.
She is the patron saint of wheelwrights, and also
a patron of jurists, philosophers, unmarried
girls, students and teachers.
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and
beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with
one another and forgiving one another, if one has
a grievance against another; as the Lord has
forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all
these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts,
the peace into which you were also called in one
body. And be thankful.
~Colossians 3:12-15
WELCOME TO CATECHETICAL CORNER!
Continuing our discussion of the
Lord's Prayer:
The final four petitions in the
"Our Father" have us calling to our merciful
Father to feed and to heal us, and to give us
victory in our battle against sin and evil
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2805). We
ask God to "Give us...our daily bread," what we
need for each day and, specifically the Eucharist
without which we cannot live and thrive (#2828-
2837). We call on him to "Forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass
against us," acknowledging that it is only through
giving mercy to others that we can accept and
appreciate God's mercy on us (#2838-2845). We
ask God to "Lead us not into temptation,"
obviously understanding that he is not leading us
there; it's more a way of saying "help us stay
away from temptation," weak as we are (#2846-
2849). And, finally, we want him to "Deliver us
from evil," from Satan himself and from all of the
lies he tries to feed us (#2850-2854). "In this
final petition, the Church brings before the Father
all the distress of the world...[and] implores the
precious gift of peace and the grace of
perseverance in expectation of Christ's return”
(#2854).
On this feast of Christ the King, as we prepare to
enter the season of Advent, we remember that
Jesus is the King of the Universe, and that he is
coming: coming into our hearts this Christmas,
coming to save us from all that would separate
us from the Father, and coming at the end of
time to restore all things to right relationship with
him! Viva Christo Rey!

SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE
Celebrated on the last Sunday of
the liturgical year, the Solemnity
of Christ the King was instituted
by Pope Pius XI in 1925 with his encyclical Quas
Primas to respond to growing secularism. The
Holy Father saw that attempting to “thrust Jesus
Christ and his holy law” out of public life would
result in continuing discord among people and
nations. The Solemnity reminds the faithful that
Christ reigns as King of the entire world forever,
and it encourages Catholics to respond to this
reality.
“If to Christ our Lord is given all power in heaven
and on earth; if all men, purchased by his
precious blood, are by a new right subjected to
his dominion; if this power embraces all men, it
must be clear that not one of our faculties is
exempt from his empire. He must reign in
our minds, which should assent with perfect
submission and firm belief to revealed truths and
to the doctrines of Christ. He must reign in our
wills, which should obey the laws and precepts
of God. He must reign in our hearts, which
should spurn natural desires and love God above
all things, and cleave to him alone. He must
reign in our bodies and in our members,
which should serve as instruments for the
interior sanctification of our souls, or to use the
words of the Apostle Paul, ‘as instruments of
justice unto God.’”
