Dear Parishioners,
On this Fourth Sunday of Easter we celebrate “Good Shepherd” Sunday. The image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd is one very familiar to us. We sing “The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want,” one of the most popular and often used psalms. In the portion of Saint John’s Gospel we hear today Jesus says,
“But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers."
The voice of the shepherd / the voice of Jesus / the voice of God
calling us by name
How important it is that we recognize this voice. How important it is that we listen to this voice. Jesus tells us that in our hearts we know this voice. This voice is speaking to each of us. This voice knows each of us. This is not the voice of a stranger. In today’s hectic world, there are so many voices competing for our attention. We must not be deceived by the stranger’s voice. We must always seek our Shepherd’s voice.
Let us pray in a special way this month of May for our children who will be receiving First Communion that they hear and listen to this one true voice.
