A group opposing plans for a $40 million Islamic school between Greenvale and Sunbury says it does not want any ‘‘Bendigo or Melton-style’’ protests when it takes its concerns to a Hume council meeting next month.

�e council has received a planning application for a primary school, eventually catering for up to 600 pupils and 35 sta�, at 200 Wildwood Road, Oaklands Junction.

�e application, lodged on behalf of Ozzi Trade Pty Ltd, includes seven learning/community buildings, an administrative o�ce, a library and multi-purpose building, gymnasium, canteen, sports ovals and a grey water treatment plant on 17.1 hectares

Phil, a spokesman for Stop the Mosque and Islamic School Sunbury/Oaklands Junction, who did not want his last name printed, con�rmed the group had been approached by Reclaim Australia and the United Patriots Front. �ose groups were involved in protests that turned violent against mosques in Bendigo and Melton last year. While the group has knocked back Reclaim in relation to staging a rally, it appears to have accepted help from them with promotional material.

‘‘We don’t want a rally,” Phil said. “We are simply urging local people to come out peacefully and show the council what they think.’’

Phil acknowledged the group, which has about 20 core members, was primarily opposed

to the school on religious grounds. But he said it did not believe a school of that size was justi�ed.

‘‘�ere’s no reason for it – the Muslim population in Sunbury is practically nil,” he said. ‘‘�ey will have to bring in people from other areas or from overseas.’’

Phil said the group was urging people against the school proposal to attend the next council meeting in Sunbury, on May 9.

Demographic data shows 1.3 per cent of Sunbury’s population identi�es as Islamic, but the �gure is more than 22 per cent in Hume’s urbanised east, including Craigieburn, Meadow Heights and Broadmeadows. For Hume’s rural balance, including Greenvale and Mickleham, the �gure is 7.2 per cent.

A social impact statement prepared for the applicant said 2300 extra primary school

places would be needed in Hume by 2036. �e statement said the Oaklands Junction school would play a role in stopping the ‘‘global emergency’’ of radicalisation of young Muslims.

‘‘�e Muslim population in Hume is large and we want to support inclusivity and acceptance through our school,’’ it said.

‘‘Our immediate concern is to demonstrate to Hume council the need to support our new Muslim school as a positive expression of our wish to integrate our children with Australian society and values while maintaining our faith.’’

Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said Hume was happy to be one of the most diverse and harmonious communities in Australia.

‘‘We’re proud to welcome people from every country of the world,’’ she said. ‘‘�e diversity … is one of the best things about this beautiful place we call home’’

Children and adults alike were jumping for joy in Lance�eld on Wednesday.

A $100,000 state government grant has been welcomed as the ‘‘missing link’’ that will allow construction of a long-awaited skate and BMX park to begin later this year.

Money from Macedon Ranges council ($130,000) and the community ($20,000) means the latest funding seals the deal on a campaign that’s been running for almost 20 years.

�e council has already approved

community-led designs, incorporating a megafauna theme, for the south-east corner of Lance�eld Park.

Skate park committee president Amy Bell says the group will �nally realise a dream that began with young people washing cars to raise $11,000 in the late 1990s.

‘‘It really is the missing link,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s been a long process with a lot of consultation with the community on the design. We’re looking forward to �nally getting started.’’

Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne �omas said the skate park’s construction would provide an

inspectors and others to rescue trapped horses safely.

Group president Roger Levell said orders had already been placed.

‘‘Horses can be a challenge to handle, especially when they �nd themselves in unexpected places,’’ he said.

At last, skates are on for park

A man has been charged a�er 23 horses were located dead at a property in Bulla on Sunday.

Police charged a 63-year-old Bulla man on Monday morning with 92 counts of animal cruelty and criminal damage o�ences.

He was to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court late yesterday.

Neighbours found nearly two dozen dead horses on Sunday a�er looking for the source of a foul smell dri�ing from Batey Court in Bulla.

Another 22 horses were su�ering from malnutrition. One horse had to be put down.

Crime prevention o�cer Senior Constable Jacqui Newman says up to 48 per cent of the�s from motor vehicles across Victoria involve number plates being stolen.

‘‘�ese plates are then used for petrol drive-o�s or much more serious crimes such as burglaries, armed robberies and ram raids,’’ she says.

‘‘O�en when we do catch up with these

people, they have numerous sets of plates on them.’’

Safe plate days will also be held at Bunnings Warehouse Craigieburn from 10am until 2pm this Saturday.

Gladstone Park shopping centre’s safe plate day is from 10am until 2pm on April 17.

Sunbury Bicycle Users Group is urging the state government and Hume council to stop quibbling and extend a dangerous path beside Vineyard Road.

Group member Hector Bugeja said a short-term solution could be achieved as soon as someone put up the money.

Responding to a letter from Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull that urged the council to work with VicRoads and Melton council to develop a joint approach for a link over the freeway, Hume chief executive Domenic Isola said the council stood ready to act once the government funded its share.

VicRoads has previously said path improvements would be considered as part of a $100 million program for new facilities across the state.

An historic Woodend estate given new life by world-renowned garden designer Paul Bangay will be open to the public for the �rst time in more than a decade later this month.

Formerly the site of Woodend’s Catholic school, the Enchanted Gardens of St Ambrose feature a sweeping, tree-lined drive and a formal European-style garden across more than 1.2 hectares.

Present owner Carolyn-Michelle Stawiczny says Bangay, who bought the property in 1997, spent close to 10 years transforming the dilapidated country chateau.

Fire restrictions will be li�ed across the Macedon Ranges and Hume on Monday, signalling the end of a long and dramatic bush�re season.

But the CFA has warned that even though residents are again allowed to burn o�, dry conditions prevail and the bush�re threat remains alive, particularly on windy days.

CFA Mountain group spokesman Mike Dornau said that although signi�cant damage had been caused by major blazes near Lance�eld and Edgecombe, the outcome ‘‘absolutely’’ could have been worse given record low rainfall, dry grass and plenty of forest fuel over the summer.

He urged residents to avoid the temptation to light burn-o�s ‘‘just because they can’’.

‘‘Last year, the restrictions were li�ed in March and, immediately, we were called to a string of burn-o�s that got out of control,’’ Mr Dornau said. ‘‘People need to remain wary of conditions and make sure they have the right equipment, including plenty of water nearby.

‘‘Out in the Cobaw Ranges and Wombat Forest especially … it’s still pretty dry. We haven’t had a lot of rain, really.’’

�e 2015-16 �re season’s biggest blaze came before restrictions o�cially began. A 266-hectare planned burn was ignited in the Cobaw Ranges near Lance�eld then broke containment lines on October 3 and again on October 6. About 3000 hectares was burnt, along wih four houses and 25 sheds, while many kilometres of fencing was destroyed.

An independent inquiry in November found the burn had been “inadequately resourced” from the start.

And in January, Sunbury man Stuart Dean Robson, 47, faced 13 charges in Melbourne Magistrates Court relating to �res lit in the area on December 25, 28 and 29.

Police alleged Robson lit a Christmas Day �re that burned through 100 hectares of grassland, fanned by winds of more than 55km/h. Five �re�ghting aircra� and 65 CFA vehicles were

used to battle the blaze.Also in January, a 100-hectare �re near

Edgecombe destroyed a house attached to a vineyard and is believed to have been deliberately lit.

In February, a man charged over the alleged sabotage of a railway siding in Hurstbridge was also charged in relation to four grass�res lit near Taradale and Malmsbury in December last year.

CFA district 2 operations manager Steve Smith said landholders should follow basic rules once restrictions were li�ed and be wary of weather conditions. “We are telling people to do the right thing by checking conditions and registering their burn-o�s,” he said.

Sunbury residents are being urged to petition for a Medicare o�ce in the town.

But with growing numbers of people claiming rebates electronically at doctors’ surgeries and a subsequent drop in face-to-face services, the federal Health Department says it has no plans to open new o�ces.

Petitioners say that with close to 74,000 people living in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges, it’s time the area had its own Medicare o�ce to give easy access to people using public health services.

Health Department general manager Hank Jongen said population size and growth, changes in public transport and proximity to existing services were factors in the department recommending new services.

But in line with falling demand, no new Medicare o�ces had been opened nationally last year, he said.

‘‘While we appreciate community feedback, the department has no plans to establish Medicare face-to-face services in Sunbury. �ere has been a signi�cant change in the way customers choose to claim their Medicare rebate.’’

�e petition was circulated at last month’s SunFest.

Hume councillors Jack Ogilvie and Jack Medcra� and the Liberal candidate for the federal seat of McEwen, Chris Jermyn, were among those getting on board.

Mr Jermyn said people were sick of making a one-hour return trip to collect rebates.

‘‘People have made it very clear they’re sick and tired of driving to Airport West to access essential Medicare services,’’ he said, promising to work with the government to get a Medicare o�ce for the town.

‘‘Sunbury has been completely ignored.’’

Mr Jongen said more than 96 per cent of all Medicare claims nationally were being lodged electronically at the point of service.

‘‘We encourage Sunbury residents to claim routine Medicare rebate items straight from their doctor’s surgery,’’ he said. ‘‘�is is the fastest and easiest way.’’

Digital services are also available through my.gov.au, the department’s smartphone apps and its Evans Street service centre.

�e amazing things people with autism can accomplish are being put �rmly in focus as part of Autism Awareness Month events in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.

Four weeks of activities designed to promote understanding began with a ‘‘blue tie’’ event, including the unveiling of the I CAN Capture Blue photo exhibition, at Woodend’s Colenso cafe last �ursday.

Blue is the worldwide colour for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a condition characterised by di�culty in communicating, forming relationships, using language and understanding abstract concepts.

Community health workers are con�dent that Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges will not be le� behind by sweeping changes to the state’s family violence support system.

�e Royal Commission into Family Violence report, released on Wednesday a�er a 13-month investigation, was described by Cobaw Community Health chief executive Margaret McDonald as ‘‘exciting and groundbreaking’’.

‘‘�is is an opportunity to really shi� and change the whole community’s understanding, how we prevent and respond to victims and perpetrators,’’ she said.

�e state government said it would implement all 227 recommendations in the report, including the creation of 17 support and safety hubs statewide.

Early intervention services and information sharing will be improved, while more specialists will be available at courts.

Premier Daniel Andrews promised a ‘‘housing blitz’’ for women in crisis and more resources for police, schools and hospitals.

Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford said priority would be given to people in rural and regional communities, where family violence rates are higher.

Ms McDonald said a greater focus on prevention and behavioural change programs was welcome.

She said Cobaw’s strong relationships with partner agencies to the north and south would ensure the area does not miss out.

‘‘If they establish something in Bendigo,

they will always pull in expertise from outlying areas,’’ she said.

While some critics expressed fears about how the reforms would be paid for, Ms McDonald said it was impossible to put a price on survivors’ lives.

‘‘Any investment is worth it,’’ she said.

‘‘Family violence and the very real impact on children and adults across the community is upper most in our minds.’’

Macedon Ranges survivor Belinda Spence said improvements to crisis housing were essential.

‘‘Many women are not going to leave a situation where they have a roof over their head for a situation where they don’t, no matter how bad it is,’’ she said.

A government spokesman said support and safety hubs would be established in each of the state’s Department of Health and Human Services districts, making it easier for victims to �nd help quickly. Mobile services may be used to reach outlying communities.

Meanwhile, Macedon Ranges council was last week recognised by Women’s Health Loddon Mallee for its e�orts to prevent violence against women. It was the �rst council to develop an action plan to prevent violence during and a�er emergencies, such as bush�res.

Not that long ago, chicken pox was as common as Vegemite on toast. It was Not that long ago, chicken pox was as common as Vegemite on toast. It was considered almost a rite of passage for children and, in fact, parents would happily take a healthy young child to a chicken pox party to ‘catch’ the itchy blisters from someone else’s poor kid.

To get it over and done with was the rationale, as well as the knowledge that the older the child, usually the worse the dose.

Of course, we now know that chicken pox can have serious consequences, especially for children and adults who have compromised immune systems, and equally for those moving into old age.

Those childhood blister-critters are the precursors to shingles decades later. Only if you’ve had chicken pox can the virus, which stays in nerve cells near the spine, become active again. We may not recall having chicken pox because it was a mild dose, but if shingles bite – on the face, chest, back, abdomen or pelvis – we can be sure we did have it.

These days, children get vaccinated for chicken pox, along with their measles-mumps jab, which explains why we no longer hear much about it.

This is an excellent thing, considering the damage shingles can wreak when we’re much older (especially over-80s) – and it’s not just the heavy-duty

stabbing pain sufferers report. The herpes zoster infection (shingles) can stabbing pain sufferers report. The herpes zoster infection (shingles) can cause deadly pneumonia in older patients.

But another nasty is called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a condition where acute pain continues after the shingles have cleared up. PHN can be a highly distressing and debilitating condition that can negatively affect a person’s physical, emotional and social wellbeing – and treatment is tricky.

The best treatment is prevention. In order to have the best chance of preventing PHN, patients and their doctors must act early once shingles erupts. The best therapy option is treatment with anti-viral agents.

This is sometimes very dif�cult as many patients, and even some doctors, may not know how to recognise the condition as shingles in the early stages.

However, in order for antiviral therapy to be effective, it must be administrated in the �rst 48 hours, at the latest 72 hours, from the onset of the rash.

So if even a mildly painful rash appears, run – don’t walk – to the doc’s because chicken pox and shingles is enough in one lifetime.

And don’t stress because that can trigger shingles.

As Lake Imaging’s long-time resident, Manuella the Mexican walking �sh, by all accounts, took to last Monday’s move to her new home in Horne Street swimmingly.

But the clinic’s new cutting-edge GE Revolution EVO scanner is the real star, according to site manager Chris Proctor.

“When we think back 45 years ago, when the �rst scanner was developed in conjunction with EMI (the record label responsible for The Beatles and Rolling Stones), it’s amazing how far CT technology has come,” says Chris.

“The �rst scanner was capable of imaging the brain only, with a scan time of more than �ve minutes for each image – and the attached computer took more than two hours to process the data and produce a recognisable image.

“Early scanners emitted high amounts of radiation and had poor image quality. Now we can image most body parts in a matter of seconds,” he said. “The visualisation of anatomy we have now wouldn’t have even been imagined in 1971.

“Our GE Revolution EVO system produces images so lifelike it’s almost frightening.”

The clinic’s team is excited to bring this amazing technology to Sunbury. It completes a suite of top-range equipment, such as the MRI, 3D mammography and digital radiography.

Chris says the new scanner offers patients huge bene�ts.

“Scan times are faster and the radiation dose is lower. It delivers improved accuracy and detail in the area of anatomy scanned, and diagnosis of conditions is faster and across a wider range of body areas.”

“This must be seen as the biggest improvement in local medical services for some time.”

There’ll be no more travelling to the city to get this level of imaging for Sunbury residents and those of the wider area.

Chelsea Burns has achieved everything she wanted out of her basketball career … now the Sunbury Jets’ captain wants to help others do the same.

Burns’ resume includes being part of the Women’s National Basketball League and representing Australia at the Uni Games. �is season, she’s added playing with the Jets.

“I’m coming to the end of my career,” Burns said last week. “Mentally, I’m still there and I’ve achieved everything that I wanted too.

“I want to help develop players, so they can be successful. I think there will be success in the near future here, and I want to help them achieve that.”

Having spent the past three years in Perth, Burns made the move back to Victoria late last year. She had o�ers from several clubs to play either SEABL, where she played more than 200 games, or in the Big V competition.

Among the o�ers was one to play with the Jets, where her partner Kennedy Kereama had been appointed coach.

“�ere were conversations with other clubs and some were more in-depth than others,” Burns said.

“I’ve coached with him [Kennedy] and always thought about playing under him.

“I was always hesitant because of our relationship … but to have the chance to play under a national coach is a good opportunity.”

�e coach-player relationship has been a good one so far.

“I couldn’t be happier to be here. We’ve learnt to leave what happens on the court on the court.”

Burns’ impact at the Jets has already been felt, and she was voted captain by the rest of the team.

“Captain is really nice, that they appreciate what I’ve brought and I’m delivering the messages in the right way. It’s good the girls have brought in to what I say.

“�e improvement so far in the two to three months I’ve been here is massive. Naomi [Stevens] is starting for us and no one expected that. Alex [Darby] hasn’t played division 1 before and she’s working hard to understand the game.”

Despite all her experience, this season is throwing up new challenges for Burns. She has never played in Big V division 1, although she did play two seasons with Melbourne Tigers in state championships in 2007-08.

“Across the board I don’t know of the girls playing in division 1,” she said. “I’ll test myself as a player and I’ll have to play on the �y.”

Burns gave a glimpse of what she can do in the Jets opening round win, recording 10 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals.

“I’m never one who will score 40 points, but will contribute in more than one category,” she said. “I hope we’re building an exciting brand of basketball.”

Captain’s call boosts Jets

Sunbury Jets men’s side is still without a win a�er the �rst two rounds of the Big V division 1 season.

�e Jets and Warrandyte traded goals for most of the �rst three quarters on Sunday, before the Venom shot away in the �nal minutes to win 70-60.

�e Jets started the better of the two, and took a six-point lead into the �rst break a�er a strong start on the boards.

Venom hit back in the second quarter to outscore the Jets 25-15 and turn the de�cit into a four-point lead.

Similar to the �rst quarter, it was the Jets who had the better of the third quarter, ensuring they stayed in the game.

Scores were level at three-quarter time, and nothing had changed four minutes into the last quarter.

�e Venom kicked up a gear and scored 10 successive points to take control of the game with what looked like a match-winning lead.

And it proved to be just that, as the Jets could only get as close as seven points as the two teams went goal-for-goal in the dying minutes.

�e Jets only scored two �eld goals in the �nal term, shooting at just 15 per cent. Mitchell Newton top-scored, with 17 points to go, with 17 rebounds, while Ish Sanders hit the scoreboard late to �nish with 15 points.

Tariq Naqqash, who came o� the bench for the Venom, proved to be the di�erence between the two teams, scoring 32 points as the Venom’s bench contributed 45 points.

�e Jets’ bench scored nine points between them.

Meanwhile, the women’s side made it two from two in division 1, defeating Chelsea.

Scores were level at the �rst two breaks, before the Jets broke the game open in the third quarter, with a 22-10 point term.

�e damage had been done and the Jets extended their lead to win 81-66.

Monqiue Stevens scored 19 points for the Jets, with Emma Mahady chipping in for 18 points. Jess Bygate and Chelsea Burns also scored double �gures, as all players got at least �ve minutes court time.

�is week, the women face Camberwell at Boardman Stadium on Saturday night, while the men play Keilor in Keilor also on Saturday night

Venom spits goal-for-goal to hold its win

Rupertswood keep its faith with youth againRupertswood is again sticking with local talent as it prepares for the new Riddell District Football League season.

�e Sharks will stay with their policy of not recruiting too many players, instead giving opportunities to their own juniors.

“�ere are a lot of players out there and some clubs are paying a lot of money for them,” new coach Kevin Fitzgerald said.

“We �nd it di�cult to justify spending lots of money, when we have so many young guys we can develop. We have a responsibility to spend money on those players.

“Look at Riddell last year . . . I saw a couple of their games and Matthew Panuccio [who still played in Riddell’s under-18.5’s last season]

was the best player. I don’t see playing young players as a problem.”

Fitzgerald said there were a number of younger players who could play senior football for Rupertswood this season.

�e club’s under-18.5 side has lost just one game in the past two seasons on the way to two premierships.

“Dylan Podolczak [six senior games] played last season and could have still played under-18.5s and Jackson Berry [two games] is another who played seniors,” Fitzgerald said.

“�ere are six or seven players who are good enough to play seniors.”

�e Sharks have added just three players to the senior team, former Romsey captain

Steve Burlak and Sunbury Kangaroos duo Phil Kaufmann and Matthew Sullivan.

Sullivan was captain of Melton South before spending last year at the Kangaroos.

“We’ve been very speci�c with who we have tried to get,” Fitzgerald said.

“Steve and Phil are big bodies and Matt is a good user of the ball.

“Steve has been there and been successful and is a quality person.

“Matt was made captain at a young age and you don’t make people captain at 21 if they aren’t a good person.

“I’ve known Phil since I coached him at Lance�eld.”

�e outs for Rupertswood include Leigh

Brennan, Mitch Gaunt and Niall and Darragh McGovern.

“You never want to lose players like them,” Fitzgerald said. “But, no disrespect to them, I think their best football is behind them.

“We’ve got some really good under-18 kids and at some stage the kids will go past them.”

Fitzgerald said he was happy with how things were going at this stage of the season.

Rupertswood’s season starts away against Wallan under lights at Bloomdale Oval on Saturday, April 15.

“We’ll be competitive again this season,” Fitzgerald said.

Sunbury Tigers’ Antonio Sanele has made an instant impact in the Queensland Rugby League’s Cyril Connell Cup competition.

�e competition, which has four pools of teams across the nation, gives the opportunity for talented under-16s to play against the best in their age group.

Playing for the Victorian Rugby League, Sanele scored a hat-trick of tries in a 36-24 win over Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the team’s opening Pool C match in Brisbane.

Victoria then beat Redcli�e Dolphins 14-0 in Melbourne and followed that with a 24-18 loss to Norths Devils.

�en Sanele was one of his team’s six try- scorers when Victoria beat Redcli�e 36-14 in Brisbane on Saturday. �e Victorian team is now in the �nals and waiting to �nd out its �rst opponent.

It’s been a big 18 months for Sanele, who represented Victoria at a national under-15s tournament in Sydney last year. He was selected in the Australian B team a�er excelling in that event.

But it all could have been so di�erent for Sanele if he hadn’t moved to Australia. “I started playing rugby union when I lived in New Zealand,” he said. “When I moved to Brisbane my uncle signed me up to play league and when I moved to Wallan I played for Sunbury.”

�e 15-year-old, who is a centre, has dreams of playing in the NRL and his idols are cross-code star Sonny Bill Williams and current Brisbane Broncos player Anthony Milford.

But for now his �rst aim is to help the Tigers under-16s advance further in the Cyril Connell Cup than last year. “We made the semis last year,” he says. “�is year we want to make the grand �nal.” Antonio Sanele is having success interstate with his rugby league. (Supplied)

TAC CupA slow start proved costly for the Calder Cannons in their TAC Cup match against Sandringham Dragons on Sunday. The Cannons trailed for three quarters and looked set for a big loss at 41 points down at three-quarter time. In a �ve-goal-to-nil �nal quarter, the Cannons reduced the margin but it was too little, too late for the Cannons. The �nal score was 10.13 (73)-9.7 (61). Karl Brown was the only multiple goal kicker for the Cannons with three, while Jackson McDonald and Brad Bernacki were named the team’s ‘best’. The Cannons have a bye this week.

GolfLes Gaunt won the Romsey Golf Club’s par competition on Saturday on a countback from Peter Scanlon. With players struggling to put together good rounds, two of the club’s veterans, Gaunt and Scanlon, were left to �ght it out. Gaunt ended up wining (7) +2 from Scanlon (28), also on +2. Scott Williams won the club’s oldest award, the Algie Mitchell Shield, in a walkover.

EDFLEast Sunbury’s season in the Essendon District Football League division 2 kicks off on Saturday afternoon. The Thunder will travel to Burnside Heights to take on the Bears from 5pm.

United mis�res in openerSunbury United’s FFV state league 2 north-west season got o� on the wrong foot with a comprehensive loss to Altona City on Saturday.

Playing its �rst match in state league 2 north-west a�er being relegated in the o� season, United was outplayed in the 4-1 loss, all �ve goals coming in the �rst half.

And if City hadn’t wasted so many opportunities, the margin could have been greater.

With complete control of the game, City locked it down in the second half to ensure all three points.

In state league 5 west, Kyneton District started the season with a 1-1 draw against Golden Plains.

Kyneton played the match with a lot of determination, cohesion and �uency and hit the front with 10 minutes to go.

Fittingly, the scorer was skipper Callum Fletcher, who �nally earned his reward for creating problems for Golden Plains up front all game.

Plains levelled the scores not long a�er to ensure the teams took home a point each.

Elsewhere, Gisborne lost 1-0 to Keilor Wolves in its opening-round match.

Gisborne’s women’s team exited the knockout competition with a 9-3 thrashing by Brighton.

Macedon set for a big oneMacedon believes it’s in a good place to build on its improvement last season in the Riddell District Football League.

A�er �nishing 11th in 2014, the Cats last year tested all the top teams early in the season before falling away as injuries took their toll.

Finishing ��h, the Cats were knocked out in the �rst week of the �nals by eventual premier Romsey.

Cats coach Je� Andrews says the early signs for season 2016 are promising.

“We’ve improved, but we don’t know how other teams will come out.

“Looking at clearances, teams like Diggers Rest and Broadford have got better, too.

“�e aim for us is to �nish higher on the ladder, beating higher teams and winning a �nal.”

�e Cats jumped out of the blocks on the recruiting front, snapping up Gisborne trio Matthew Knox, Tom Waters and Casey Summer�eld.

“We got the three guys from Gisborne and are looking at younger guys pushing up into the seniors to �ght for senior spots,” Andrews says.

“�ere’s a lot of internal pressure for spots. “Seb Miletic is set for a big year. He was a

goal-kicker at under-18 level and is looking �t.“Zachary Smedley spent the summer with

the Cannons and has been working hard. �ere’s de�nitely some talent there looking to push into the senior team.”

With his players enjoying a pre-season free of injury, Andrews has had a chance to get a good look at the playing group for the coming season.

�e club has played one practice match, against Inverloch, and held a community camp on the Bass Coast.

Andrews says that while the Cats won a close game against Inverloch, his side was missing more than a third of its players while Inverloch was at full strength.

“Training has been really good and there’s been good numbers.

“Everyone who’s looking to play seniors has been at training every session.

“�ere’s no one on the injury list so far. �e good thing about guys being �t is that we’ve seen about 30 who could be pushing for senior spots.

“�e depth is a lot greater than last year. We’ve got guys who can come in and get the job done.”

�e Cats kick o� their season against Broadford on April 17.

Meanwhile, the RDFL action starts on Saturday with Woodend-Hesket hosting Lance�eld, and Rockbank and Melton Centrals meeting in a derby.

Rupertswood is prepared for the challenge ahead as it steps up to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup.

Rupertswood president Peter Kavanagh said that having won the B-grade grand �nal last month, the club had already started to look ahead to next season when it will be in the top grade for the �rst time since 2012-13.

“We de�nitely think we have the players to be competitive next season,” Kavanagh said. “How competitive will be the question … even this year the players looked at some of the

First step for Rupertswood is to appoint a new coach.

Premiership-winning coach John Lane stood down a�er the grand �nal. Lane, who had previously coached the club, always planned his comeback to be for one season only. Kavanagh paid tribute to his contribution during two stints of coaching Rupo.

“�e results in the �nals say a lot,” Kavanagh said. “I’m pretty sure he’s been around the club his whole cricketing career.

“He’s a just a total club player and a natural

leader. Once he starts talking, he gets the players’ attention. We’ve got a lot to thank him for.”

Kavanagh says the club would like to �nd a new coach with similar attributes to Lane.

“It’s hard to replace someone like him …ideally, we’d like someone who can be a player as well, or if they aren’t a player can bring a couple of blokes with them.

“We’d really like an extra batsman for next season.”

Lane is expected to play on, but which grade he lines up for is yet to be determined as he steps back from the top job.

Kavanagh says the club is hoping to appoint the new coach within the next month.

Rupertswood has advertised the role and begun talks with candidates.

“We always knew John coming back would be for one year, so we knew we had to �nd a new coach,” the president said.

“�e club is in a good place and we’ve got people wanting to play here.

“We could look at having an extra side next season.

“All we need now is to have that senior coach in place,” Kavanagh said.

With SUVs being all the rage, it’s quite a treat to get behind the wheel of a really nice sedan.

�e oddly-named Honda Accord Sport Hybrid – it’s not sporty – is certainly in that category and it’s also cutting edge with its high-tech 2.0-litre hybrid engine that provides decent power with less thirst than a camel.

It’s a nice-looking car with simpler, more conservative lines than the smaller Hondas. �at said, I’m probably in the age demographic for which it’s designed.

�e blue-tinged grille and big headlights with LED running lamps along the bottom are probably the only thing that give away the fact this isn’t your average sedan.

While Toyota has become synonymous with hybrid technology in this country, it’s o�en forgotten that it was Honda that �rst brought the technology to Australian roads.

Trouble was, Toyota did it better – so Honda went back to the drawing board and came back with its “Earth Dreams” powerplant, which let drivers shi� through electric, hybrid and petrol drive modes.

Without getting too technical, the 2.0-litre petrol engine is linked to two electric motors that provide more power to the engine when needed and also do all the work at low speeds, drawing power from lithium-ion batteries in the back of the car.

�e result is excellent economy for a car this size while having the same power as bigger engines.

�e week I had the Accord included two trips to Ballarat and there was still more than a quarter of a tank when I handed it back – and I hardly drove it in Eco mode. Honda reckons it does 4.6L/100km combined driving and I was certainly on par with that on the freeways.

Inside it looks and feels great. �e dashboard, centre console and interactive screen come together nicely. �e gauge cluster features a large analogue speedo plus a digital display showing powertrain system information. Instead of a tacho there’s meters showing your

economy level and how much engine or battery you’re using.

In the centre there two screens – a 5.8-inch colour central touch-screen for the audio system and above that an 8.0-inch colour screen trip computer information, reversing camera and the LaneWatch blind-spot monitoring that shows a backward view down the passenger side of the car when the le� indicator is activated. �ere’s also built-in satellite navigation.

�e top-spec Accord has even more high-tech safety wizardry, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking System and Lane Keep Assist System, which gently steers the car back into the lane if you stray over the line.

With all that comes a host of creature comforts including sunroof, 360-Watt six-speaker sound, keyless start, dual-zone climate-control and auto wipers.

�ere are comfortable, leather-appointed front seats and eight powered settings.

�e back is quite roomy for a mid-sized sedan, though cargo space is limited in the boot because of the hybrid battery storage.

�is is a beautiful car, that’s a pleasure to drive. It’s not cheap, and hybrid powertrain aside, you can get most of the bells and whistles in the Accord V6 L for about $6000 less. But Honda is con�dent it will �nd a niche market.

It’s also almost double the price of the Hybrid Camry but is a class above that, being more in keeping with the hybrid Lexus sedans.
