All prescribed burns scheduled for the Macedon Ranges this spring will be reviewed aer a 3000-hectare blaze near Lanceeld put hundreds of houses in the ring line.

e Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) made the promise on Friday in response to community outrage over the planned burn in the Cobaw Ranges, which jumped containment lines on grand nal day, and again last Tuesday.

As reported by Star Weekly online, furious residents have called for heads to roll at DELWP.

On Friday, Lanceeld agronomist James Almond was one of many people who demanded to know why department secretary Adam Fennessy and Environment Minister Lisa Neville had yet to front a public meeting and apologise.

If I dont liaise with my clients, I get sacked, he said.

Criticising the departments communication process before the September 30 burn, Mr Almond also slammed DELWP for previously saying conditions were suitable.

It wasnt appropriate to light a re in El Nino conditions, he said.

All my clients are cutting crops because theyve got no soil moisture, and then the department lights a re? Weve known about this for six months.

A DELWP spokesman said Mr Fennessy and Ms Neville were expected to appear in Lanceeld on Monday.

e state government has commissioned a full investigation into the escaped burn, which has destroyed at least four houses.

However, many people fear that while the probe will be critical of prescribed burning practices, nobody will truly be held to account.

Feeneys Lane resident Chris Jolly said somebody had to take responsibility.

If it was me and somebody said in four days time youre going to get 30-degree days and strong winds, I would say dont light it. Its just so stupid.

Properties from the edge of Lanceeld through to Benloch, Pastoria East, Pastoria, Nulla Vale, Baynton and Emu Flat have been threatened by the blaze.

Many thousands of litres of already scarce water has also been drained from dams.

As the re raged, community meetings held in Lanceeld heard from countless residents some yelling, others in tears, and all angry that the community was in the path of a blaze that should never have happened.

    Burn-off fury ignited

If I had lit that re, Id go to jail, but you will all get away with it, one man shouted at DELWP chief re ocer Allan Goodwin.

e department has copped extreme criticism aer it was revealed reghters who were meant to be on standby for the planned burn may have been deployed elsewhere.

Landholders in the area have also claimed that trucks le near the site along Lanceeld-Cobaw Crozier Track were not

staed on the grand nal public holiday. But Mr Goodwin said extensive work had gone into planning the burn, and he denied the re had been unattended at any stage.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne omas said it was unacceptable that locals have been put in this position. She welcomed the appointment of Lanceeld Neighbourhood House co-ordinator Vivien Philpotts as a member of the governments independent investigation

panel, as Ms Philpotts urged people to make their voices heard, and tell their stories.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, who both visited the town on ursday, said people had every right to be angry.

attacks. eyve been absolutely amazing, she said.

A CFA volunteer was close to tears aer repeatedly trying to enter a re-aected road to check on a resident, who was believed to be in their home, before nding out they were safe.

ey just do whatever it takes, Ms Burns said. She said the emotional burden of the week was starting to hit many people.

Ive been calm and controlled since Tuesday, but I woke up on Friday and I was really emotional.

    By Matt Crossman

Residents aected by the devastating Cobaw Ranges blaze have heaped praise on reghters for going above and beyond the call of duty in their eorts to protect lives and property.

e re, which has destroyed up to four houses, many sheds, several vehicles, farm machinery and kilometres of fencing, was 95 per cent controlled when Star Weekly went to print.

Information from the Gisborne control centre showed the blaze, initially thought to have covered more than 4000 hectares, had

been downgraded to 3000 hectares. Mild weather conditions allowed authorities to ramp up eorts to back-burn and use bulldozers to create a track around the 60-kilometre re front.

Charlotte Burns, who runs Weekaway Recreational Camp in Kitchenhams Lane, said the re came within 500 metres of her house.

Buildings at the school camp site were not damaged, but large stretches of fencing will have to be replaced.

I cant speak highly enough of the guys and girls in the CFA, Ms Burns said. eyve been on our property constantly, stopping ember

had been aected. e Lanceeld painter had been sleeping on a friends couch since the blaze began.

Mr Jolly said he and his wife had decided to move closer to town.

We cant do this any more.Authorities hoped to control the blaze by

Sunday. ey said they had little condence in predictions of storm activity heading into the weekend but would continue to check conditions on the hour.

Assessment teams will continue to scour the area, entering aected properties when it is safe to do so.

    Ranges re takes emotional toll

Relaxed burn-o restrictions, designed to give residents on blocks less than 4000 square metres more time to prepare for the re season, have been cancelled by Macedon Ranges council.

In the wake of the Lanceeld re and a series of private burn-os that got out of control early last week, the council has reversed its decision to allow a one-month grace period during October.

is means no one is permitted to burn o. A council spokeswoman said conditions would be reassessed this week.

Fireghters were called to at least half a dozen incidents in Woodend, Kyneton, Lanceeld and Sunbury aer the grand nal long weekend.

Mountain group CFA spokesman Mike Dornau told Star Weekly reghters had dealt with reignitions across the area.

Whats happened is people have lit them on the weekend and not put them out properly, then the wind picks up, Mr Dornau said.

e regulations are that if you light a re you must ensure you put it out, and continue to monitor it for a few days.

Youve really got to say now, were in for a hell of a season. Were six weeks ahead of where we normally are.

CFA chief ocer Euan Ferguson urged landholders everywhere to ensure their properties were re-ready.

ere is still green grass around. but that grass has cured o signicantly in the past few days, he said.

    e re season is here.

Full bans back as re season starts early

Amid the fear and frustration of the bushre thats torn through the Cobaw Ranges, many examples of selessness and charity are emerging.

From neighbours helping to hose down each others properties or beat o ames, to residents inside Lanceelds town limits oering rooms and even houses to those displaced by the blaze, theres been no shortage of people willing to lend a hand.

As the drama unfolded last Tuesday, elderly Lanceeld residents who could not drive were taken to a relief centre in Gisborne on the back of a re truck.

Lanceelds pub put on a free barbecue as people huddled in the centre of town.

Generosity has continued in the days that have followed. e towns op shop has received many donations of clothing for people unable to return to their homes.

Cafes have oered free coee to reghters, and a recovery centre in the Mechanics Institute has taken a steady ow of inquiries from residents oering paddocks to relocate horses.

Lions Club and Salvation Army volunteers have kept hundreds of reys fed and watered at the Lanceeld staging grounds.

e owners of a Benloch school camp invited neighbours to gather in safety and share food intended for a cancelled booking.

Goodwill also cut through the tension of several community meetings, including on ursday night when a local CFA volunteer fought back tears as she oered to take the addresses of people worried about animals that hadnt been fed in three days.

We will go past every one of those houses and check on your animals, she said.

To report animals injured in the re, phone 0476 158 080.

Melbourne region reveal the grim statistic among a host of other health indicators that have Hume medical practitioners worried.

Neil Cowen, chief executive of Broadmeadows-based not-for-prot health provider Dianella, said the gures did not come as a surprise but reinforced the magnitude of the health providers workload.

Humes snapshot reveals that 26.1 per cent of women and 26.9 per cent of men are obese, compared to the state average of 17.2 and 17.4 per cent respectively.

More than 19 per cent of residents smoke, and 21.8 per cent reported their health status as fair or poor. e fact sheet gave Humes rating for chronic disease prevalence, disability, lifestyle risk factors, reported dental health, reported health status, premature mortality and child and mental health as negative.

ere are no surprises because Dianella knows that people living in Hume have very poor health outcomes compared to the Melbourne average, he said. Obesity rates correlate to the social determinates of health, such as a persons income or level of education.

e health snapshot was the rst report released by the federal governments new North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network, one of 31 networks set up to replace the now defunct Medicare Locals.

Dr Cowen described diabetes as an epidemic in Hume. Weve got a diabetes crisis and it leads to a whole range of other complications like blindness and amputations.

Hume councillor Jack Ogilvie plans to appear at a charity ball that will raise money for his recovery from a severe stroke.

Organising committee spokesman Adam Mizzi said Sunbury-based Cr Ogilvie, who is still undergoing extensive rehabilitation, was looking forward to the event at Pitruzzello Estate on October 17.

It was a bit emotional for him when we put the billboards up around town, Mr Mizzi said.

eres been a few tears and a lot of gratitude from Jack.

Cr Ogilvie was paralysed on his le side aer suering a stroke on July 6.

Doctors are said to be amazed at the initial recovery of Cr Ogilvie, who many years ago beat a cancer that was considered terminal.

A Mia Mia mother who uses cannabis to treat her daughters severe epilepsy says changes to allow parents to legally access locally manufactured medical marijuana from 2017 are too far away and will not go far enough anyway.

e state government last week conrmed that it fully accepted 40 recommendations from a Victorian Law Reform Commission (VLRC) report tabled in Parliament.

A cultivation trial at a Victorian research facility will start shortly, aer the government decided to allow parents access to medicinal cannabis for children with severe epilepsy.

Eventually, growers will be licensed by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources.

But Cherie OConnell, whose daughter Tara has been seizure-free since a few days aer she was rst administered cannabis in April 2013, said there needs to be legal protection for families already using the drug to relieve pain and treat life-threatening conditions.

Tara used to have up to several hundred seizures a day before she was rst given medical marijuana.

I personally wont be moving to a government-approved product, Ms OConnell said.

I want recognition of the products were already accessing. What we are using is one particular strain. Weve been two and a half

years seizure free. Why would you want to mess with that?

Ms OConnell said, until now, families using medicinal cannabis didnt know if and when they could be charged.

Its still only being done unocially, she said.

Im not asking for the products we use to necessarily be regulated.

We just want to be able to have the same right to access.

We need full legalisation. Its a great start but theres more to be done.

e VLRC report also recommended that access be extended to people suering severe muscle spasms or severe pain due to multiple sclerosis, severe pain and other symptoms caused by cancer and AIDS, and severe chronic pain, aer getting approval of two specialists.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy said evidence was growing about the positive eects of medicinal cannabis on patients quality of life.

Children with severe epilepsy will be the rst to access medicinal cannabis because their condition can be life-threatening, and it may be their last treatment option.

    Cannabis cure too far away

I wont be moving to a government-approved product - Cherie OConnell

A Gisborne nurse, who has been assessing and tending to the health needs of patients for close to 25 years, is in the running for a major national award.

Woodend resident Jane Goldsmith, who splits her time between being a general practice nurse at Gisborne Medical Clinic and a midwife at Kilmore Hospital, will travel to Brisbane on ursday night as a nalist in the Australian Nursing Awards.

Ms Goldsmith says her nomination in the nurse of the year category came as a complete surprise.

Its nice, but I really feel in many ways that Im representing other nurses, she says.

Ms Goldsmith was nominated for her work to develop local nurse networks, providing support to and mentoring other nurses. She also helped establish immunisation and PapScreen clinics.

Ms Goldsmith says that while nursing remains hard work, shes grateful to have a job she can be passionate about.

eres the variety, the diversity, but essentially its the ability to make a dierence to peoples lives at a time when they might be quite vulnerable.

    Its an incredibly special job.

The council-supported program nished with a celebration at Braemar College last Wednesday. Pretty ponies, scream-inducing rides and shiny underbirds were high on the list of popular features of Saturdays Sunbury Agricultural Show.

Tributes marking the 100th anniversary of the Anzacs were also a focal point of this years event, which drew thousands of people to Sunbury Recreation Reserve.

Agricultural society president Tony McMahon said, while crowd numbers were down slightly due to predicted storm activity, those who made it to the show were treated to a good day.

Appearances by the Creswick Light Horse Troop proved especially popular.

Even their uniforms, right down to their buttons and bootstraps, they were just impeccable, Mr McMahon said.

e event also recognised heroes of more recent wars, with local national servicemen guests of honour at a show day luncheon.

ey were happy to be there. As we know, Vietnam veterans were treated appallingly when they returned, so we just wanted to show in a small way that we appreciate what they did, just like those who served in other conicts, Mr McMahon said.

Horse and livestock events, poultry shows, an arts pavilion, sideshows and a treasure trail catered to many interests, while truck and classic car displays had plenty of fans.

Mr McMahon said the combined eorts of the shows 100 or so volunteers ensured things went o without a hitch.

eres so much planning that goes into it, but those people make it all happen on the day, he said.

We all slept pretty well on Saturday night.Picture gallery: www.starweekly.com.au

Tutti amano la pasta everyone loves pasta. From a hearty bowl of spag bol to rened angel-hair pasta lightly touched with oil and herbs, pasta is a favourite with everyone.

Knowing the differences between pasta shapes and their suitability for particular dishes can be tricky.

The shapes can range from tubular and ribbons to strands and parcels.

What is the difference and how are they usually prepared?

Slurpy and messy: Long, thin shapes such as spaghetti, linguini and vermicelli are usually served with light seafood sauces or cream andoil-based sauces.

Hearty and meaty: Long ribbons such as tagliatelle, pappardelle and fettuccine are usually reserved for heavier meat sauces.

Conchiglie (shell-shaped): Usually served with a heavy cream ormeat-based sauces. Large shells can also be stuffed.

Twisty baby: Spiral-shaped pasta such as fusilli is used with lighter and smoother sauces, allowing the sauces to cling well.

Suck the goodness: Tubular pastas such as penne, rigatoni and macaroni are best used with vegetable sauces or in baked dishes.

Small but mighty: Micro pastas such as orzo, fregola and stelline are used for soups, stews and salads.

Filled pasta shapes include ravioli and tortellini. Preparing pasta is simple, rewarding and delicious.

    Great lunch menu!

Weekend breakfasts and brunches have become such a treasured part of Australian life that Seasons Bistro owner and head chef Deborah Murray is working on turning them into a ne art.

Our breakfasts, particularly on weekends, are very popular, she says. The place is buzzing. And, of course, we take coffee very seriously we have a blend specically roasted for us by Coffee Basics in Castlemaine.

Our porridge, Ambers Choice (named after a local), has fuelled our diners through winter the springtime breakfasts have house-made granola, avocado and fetta smash, and the ever-popular spring roesti with corn and asparagus is back on the menu.

Deborah believes in good, honest food and

in making the most of being in the Macedon Ranges, a region known for its abundance of innovative fresh-food producers.

Those passions are showcased in a cuisine style that crosses boundaries, with European and Asian inuences interpreted in a modern, Australian way. All dishes, sauces and condiments are made in-house from fresh ingredients.

    Selling at Auction

The first rule is to accurately price your property. YoYoY u want people toshow up. If you start out too high, you may miss the very person preparedto buy your property. Maximise the number of participants at the actualauction, you will have the best chance of achieving spirited bidding. When you advertise, try not to stretch the truth by over-promising.People get angry when advertised views turn into a glimpsethrough the branches of a tree. But do maximise the amount ofadvertising to attract the highest number of auction participants.Good properties attract the most interested buyers and tendto be the best type of property to auction. So if you have aproperty with unique features, auctioning is the way to go.While its good to be patient, be prompt with your responses when real negotiatingbegins. If an offfff er comes in, its good to respond within 24 hours.Dont try to squeeze every dollar out of renovations. Sometimes tastes varyand the buyer may put a difffff erent value on things. Keep your reservrvr e pricehigh. Coming down is easy to do. YoYoY u can sometimes negotiate by allowinga variance in settlement completion dates as opposed to lowering the price. And finally, stay relaxed. Dont get into a situation where you are fofof rced to sell. The buyer will detect your desperation and, correspondingly, lower their bid.We at Brad TeTeT al Real Estate are expert in all aspects of real estate If you have areal estate need or question, feel free to phone me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555,or to call into our friendly offiffif ces fofof r immediate assistance.
